Very helpful. did mine yesterday. watched this twice and made 2 pages of A4 notes before heading to the drive with tools and timing belt kit. Funnily enough, I made the same mistake by not realising there were two different Aux belt options and have the longer 1900mm one now going on ebay ! This was so good guidance - all the bolt head sizes perfect and the tensioner explanation saved so much head scratching. Thanks for uploading this.
Excellent tutorial, watched it several times, along with others but this is by far the best, did mine today, took 6 hours, had a bitch of a job getting the belt back on, just didn't seam to be enough slack, took almost an hour of trying but got it in the end, and the belt tensioner was a pig too, definitely a 2 man job, ( had to rope wifey in) i couldn't see it enough from above to get the pin to lever against. Anyway thanks again for an outstanding vid, i would never have done it without seeing how doable it was from you

Thank you so much for your video, was very well explained. Only little drama was getting tension set up but got there in the end. Vauxhall quoted £800 for a cam belt change, with your spares link saved £600. Cheers
As already stated this is one of the best videos on this. Although I would just like to add that the camshaft on the Mk1 models (the A20DTH engine) will 'flip' a few degrees out of position when the old belt is removed, but this is not a disaster - & although special locating tools are advised the camshaft can be held back into position using a 20mm socket & T bar. The cam belt tensioner did take a few attempts to 'set' to the correct position - mainly due to the limited access. Lastly the upper and lower idlers mentioned in the video: the upper one is for the cam belt (50NM) the lower one is on the outside for the auxiliary drive/alternator belt (20NM). Not a bad job to do - & taking my time it took around 7 hours.
The camshaft moved out of position compared to my markings. When moving the camshaft to line up it keeps springing out of position. How do i solve this problem?
@@matthewlloyd7332 Hi Matthew. I did cover this - but just to add, if the camshaft drive needs holding in position, I found holding it 'in line' with a 20mm socket on the T bar did the trick. Although this can be awkward on your own so another pair of hands would definitely help while fitting the cambelt. The crankshaft & fuel pump drive should not move or be an issue. When the cambelt is fitted rotate the crank at least twice to ensure everything is still in line with your original markings - & for the tensioner to settle. Anyway I hope this clears things up - & good luck.

As a heads up the crankshaft marks mean nowt in the a20dth engine you need the cam locking took and the crankshaft alignment tool. As an example my current job on the insignia the cam shat marks are 90 degrees and locked into tdc while the crankshaft is 270 degrees I often think the marks on the insignia are there to mess us up
Excellent video. Very clear instructions, pace was just right. Certainly gives me the confidence to change my timing belt. Thanks very much and I will definitely be subscribing 😊👍
Great video. Just subscribed. I’ve just brought an Insignia estate, and I’m handy with spanner’s, so I will do the belt when it’s due. Saves me garage costs.
Thank you for this video, succesfully changed my belt this morning. Just one thing - after lining it up and marking the timing, I removed the belt. Upon removing the belt the cam pully spun round, so it was almost as though the location of the markings put it right at the top (or bottom?) of its stroke, meaning that it was quite tricky to hold it where it needed to be to keep the timing whilst installing the new belt. Aside from using a locking tool/kit, is there anything I could've done differently to stop this from happening?
Not really it must just be the spot that you marked it on, I know exactly what you mean , it can make it abit awkward when fitting the belt and trying to hold the cam at the same time!ha
Fantastic video. Great help! Thanks a lot for taking the time to put this together. Having had a go at my Astra J 2.0CDTI, I found I had not noticed the typical pulley/sprocket bolts. I thought they were Allen but NO, its a RIBE version. If I only paid attention. So had to put everything back together...🤨 Managed to find the RIBE bits, but am wondering what size the bolts are. Maybe good to know for the next DIY mechanic...
8 mm I just found out. There is also an interesting part on the the engine mount which attaches to the engine. The top left bolt goes through a hollow shaft which can extend. It seems it is meant for some sort of adjustment, altough I am not sure. I put the mount back to the engine putting all the other bolts back in, leaving the top left for last. Subsequently I extended the shaft in the top left bolt position out (turning right) till it touches the engine. After that I put the bolt back in. But the timing belt is on, the waterpump in and the aux belt done. Thanks again!
Wow mate really spot on video nicely explained, doing this job this weekend have watched other vids and thought they were good but yours blows them out the water like, none of the others explain setting the timing marks but you do, wish I never bought the timing lock kit now but hey I’ve got it now lol, subbed 👍
Yeah great video mate. Just removed the intake manifold on saab z19dtr and replaced with a non swirl flat insignia version. I could see dried coolant around the water pump and this looks my next job. Super detail indeed, is that really a £500 to £600 garage job. 39:25
Don't forget to do your oil pickup seal, kids! Aside from the issues, this really is a great engine. @12:49 you line the notch on the pump with the pulley. This isn't actually TDC - you must line the dimple on the pulley with the cut out on the pump. Handy to know if you lose the timing or didn't mark it.
Hi mate, I've lost timing on mine so I've no reference of where things should be. I've lined the crank mark with the cut out on the shroud as show on the video here, is that incorrect? I'm not sure I'm following what you mean here. Be very grateful for any tips!
Great detailed video 👏🏻👏🏻 Tipex timing markings, in my motor trade days, I made the mistake of spraying brake spray to clean up the job… dissolved my timing marking ☹️☹️
Really helpful video thanks you go through everything and not rush it like other videos going to tackle this myself and do the oil pick up seal aswell wish me luck 👍
Brilliant video. Thanks a lot just done my belt. Only thing I'd say is I wish I'd used a cam locking tool. The thing kept springing put of position. In the end I managed with a G clamp 😂
Brilliant demonstration. However I do have one question regarding the tensioner. I've heard some say that the arrow should line up in the centre of the slider but you've mentioned that the arrow go farther and should line up with the small circular cut out. Could you please clarify which is correct... tx
Splendid video, thank you for sharing! Just one question: I have a 2.0 biturbo A20DTR. Does the procedure look the same, or should I be looking for a different video?
i notice a lot of 2.0 diesel insignias for sale over 130k miles on the clockk. guessing when looked after timing belts changed on time. oil pump seal done on time they are not bad cars
Great video i was just doing mine and the fuel pump pully got moved , is there a timing mark for it , does it need to be timed up, i have ordered a locking kit but doesnt seem to have a tool for locking pump , thankyou
Great informative video, Can you tell me please? The bolt in the bag in the gates kit, Is that the bolt you use to bolt into the side engine to pry against when you tension the belt?
Excellent explanation. how long roughly does it take to do ? I need to take off the sump as well to do the dreaded oil pressure washer do you think Its best to do both while I am at the belt?
Nice video! Have you ever come across one of these jumping 2 teeth on the timing? It's happened to me twice now and the belt has been tensioned correctly and still has correct tension when it skips. Mine is the biturbo which has a smaller fuel pump pulley and an additional small guide pulley up the top which is the upper and lower pulley you mentioned
Tbh I can’t say I have really mate , had issues with the tensioners in the early days and with cheap brands but never had an issue with using gates kits
Very interesting video, thanks. I have a Opel Astra, 16v 2L. If the tensioner belt disintegrates is it possible that pieces of it could enter the cam belt cover & cause damaged?
This video is good only if the easiest job to be done - remowing old belt and installing new. Now somebody explain, how to install new belt if old belt was broken while driwing? Presumably all the damage is fixed, so just the installing belt part.
I will be doing my zafira c with this engine tomorrow and i hope its okay! This guide seems to be very thorough! Is the radiator hose just held on with a hose clamp and i can pull it off? And how much coolant do these hold all together do you know?
Mine didn't come with the tensioner bolt? Presume I use the old one? You had a new one. The one that fitted into the tensioner wouldn't go thro...never come across that before...any advice?

how did it turn out for you & how long did it take to complete? Thanks
Yeah great video mate. Just removed the intake manifold on saab z19dtr and replaced with a non swirl flat insignia version. I could see dried coolant around the water pump and this looks my next job. Super detail indeed, is that really a £500 to £600 garage job. 39:25
👍👍
Don't forget to do your oil pickup seal, kids!
Aside from the issues, this really is a great engine.
@12:49 you line the notch on the pump with the pulley. This isn't actually TDC - you must line the dimple on the pulley with the cut out on the pump.
Handy to know if you lose the timing or didn't mark it.
Thanks for the comments and tip appreciated 👍
Hi mate, I've lost timing on mine so I've no reference of where things should be. I've lined the crank mark with the cut out on the shroud as show on the video here, is that incorrect? I'm not sure I'm following what you mean here. Be very grateful for any tips!
Great detailed video 👏🏻👏🏻
Tipex timing markings, in my motor trade days, I made the mistake of spraying brake spray to clean up the job… dissolved my timing marking ☹️☹️
haha ive done similar before! 😂 thanks for the comment! much appreciated 😃
Really helpful video thanks you go through everything and not rush it like other videos going to tackle this myself and do the oil pick up seal aswell wish me luck 👍
Thanks for the comments , much appreciated as a small YT channel! Good luck 👍👌
@@diydaly done it today and its worked no probs bit fiddley lol but thanks again mate 👍
@@christopherhall904 nice one! Glad you got it all sorted 👌👌👍
Brilliant video. Thanks a lot just done my belt. Only thing I'd say is I wish I'd used a cam locking tool. The thing kept springing put of position. In the end I managed with a G clamp 😂
🤣👍👍
Tip top votre vidéo ça va bien m'aider car je n'ai pas les piges spécifique et je ne fais pas souvent ce modèle de courroie 👌👌👌👌
👍👍
Does crank timing mark not have to be at 9 o'clock great video 👍👀
Brilliant demonstration. However I do have one question regarding the tensioner. I've heard some say that the arrow should line up in the centre of the slider but you've mentioned that the arrow go farther and should line up with the small circular cut out. Could you please clarify which is correct... tx
Thanks , The circle is the marker 👍
Splendid video, thank you for sharing! Just one question: I have a 2.0 biturbo A20DTR. Does the procedure look the same, or should I be looking for a different video?
i notice a lot of 2.0 diesel insignias for sale over 130k miles on the clockk. guessing when looked after timing belts changed on time. oil pump seal done on time they are not bad cars
Yeah there not bad tbh , as you say the oil pump seal is the main think that kills them!
Well done mate. Superb wee video. Good work on that timing belt change.
Great video
👍
Great video i was just doing mine and the fuel pump pully got moved , is there a timing mark for it , does it need to be timed up, i have ordered a locking kit but doesnt seem to have a tool for locking pump , thankyou
You can just paint mark it mate
Brilliant Video !
Any chance of doing one for a vacuum pump replacement on same engine please
Yeah will do if the chance comes up 👍
Perfect tutorial. Excellent explanation. Very helpful. Thank you.
👍👍
Great informative video, Can you tell me please? The bolt in the bag in the gates kit, Is that the bolt you use to bolt into the side engine to pry against when you tension the belt?
you made my life easy again.
👍
Dude you are really good at explanation, thank you so much ,the best ❤️
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment 😃
Excellent step by step guide…well done mate 👍
Thanks mate 👍
Why is there a timing mark on the high pressure pump. It just builds pressure 🤔
Sometimes just for balancing reasons
Excellent video. Very informative and explained everything well. Thank you. More confident in doing it myself now. Subscribed.
Thanks for the comments and sub Andy 👍 much appreciated & glad to help! 👌
My inlet manifold is leaking coolant on insignia 2011 you got a vid on how to do that
Not yet , potentially a future job!
Quite easily the best explained video there is !, is there no need to put any bolts/pins/drill bits in or are your new marks sufficient .
Thanks! 👍👍 yeah you can just paint mark em mate 👌
Did u find where the oil leak was coming from on the sump.as mine got the same issue
Afraid not mate
Helped with the tensioner...cheers mate
👍👍
Excellent explanation. how long roughly does it take to do ? I need to take off the sump as well to do the dreaded oil pressure washer do you think Its best to do both while I am at the belt?
👍👍 id probably tackle it as a separate job tbh mate, hopefully you've got the holes in the gearbox case for the sump bolts!
Excellent video bud, very easy to understand. Much appreciated thanks.
Thanks for the comment , much appreciated 😁👌👍
Are gates a decent brand for timing belts ? It's either a gates or contitech but not sure
Yeah i really like them he gates stuff .. contitech are spot on too though
When tightening the tensioner I seen someone say it’s meant to be between the two lines. Are you sure it’s up to the dot?
As per autodata 👍
@@diydaly awesome, thanks for the reply
Very interesting video, thanks. I have a Opel Astra, 16v 2L. If the tensioner belt disintegrates is it possible that pieces of it could enter the cam belt cover & cause damaged?
Yes it’s possible , if it shreds and goes to the inside of the pulley
So if that does happen & the timeing has hopped, can that also cause bent valves?
Many thanks.
@@johnnorthcote4753 yes that’s correct 👍
How long should a good motor mechanic take to remove & replace a time tensioner unit with a new belt? Thanks
@@johnnorthcote4753 2.5 hours with a water pump on this engine
This video is good only if the easiest job to be done - remowing old belt and installing new. Now somebody explain, how to install new belt if old belt was broken while driwing? Presumably all the damage is fixed, so just the installing belt part.
I will be doing my zafira c with this engine tomorrow and i hope its okay! This guide seems to be very thorough! Is the radiator hose just held on with a hose clamp and i can pull it off? And how much coolant do these hold all together do you know?
thanks!👍 , I can't quite remoeebr tbh I think its a clip type fitting on it
Must agree, very good detailed video with lots of information and guidance 11/10 - keep up the great work kudos2U
Much appreciated!
Mine didn't come with the tensioner bolt? Presume I use the old one? You had a new one. The one that fitted into the tensioner wouldn't go thro...never come across that before...any advice?
id re-use the old mate
@@diydaly yes I did in the end. Found out that the bolt is extra they don't supply one with the kit. Ridiculous really
Absolutely brilliant video, top class walk through. Thank you so much and for all the links swell Top Man.🙂
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for the comment 👍
thanks very much especially for adding all the tool info thanks again
You are very welcome, thanks for the comment 👍
Very nice clear how to video. 5/5 stars
Thank you kindly!👍
