  • Just got my hands on the new Roland Jupiter-X and I wanted to get a jump on some videos right away, so here's my first impressions and some sounds from scratch using the included Jupiter-8 engine and some of the built-in effects.
    There's lots more worth touching base on that I hope to cover in later videos, but for now, know this thing is a TANK. It's a serious upgrade over the System-8 build quality-wise and the keys are some of the best I've ever played (which is very important to me! {duh!}).
    Otherwise, keep in mind this is essentially a pre-release unit and as such I don't have a manual, or any drivers so I'm just sort of figuring it all out as I go, but that being said I will be spending a lot of time trying to figure this thing out and get to the bottom of it all-- So let me know if you have any specific questions I can answer for you.

    Thanks for these first impressions. I've been holding off buying a poly synth until this come out. Its sounds good, and certainly looks to be a very feature packed synth, but I'm wondering if that comes at the cost of ease of use? (You turned on Aftertouch with a lot of button clicking, and that 7 segment LED info display looks nicely retro but maybe its hard to decypher?). Sure, please line it up against your originals, but please also consider comparing to a synth at the other end of the design spectrum (but around the same price?), like the Sequential Prophet 6 or OB6.

    I have a Jupiter 80 and love it! What are your opinions between the the X and the 80 (considering if you have used the 80)?

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  4 года назад

      I remember seeing the Jupiter-80 in the store when they first came out and not 'getting it' and passing it by for more hands-on synths. Then my bother got a 50 and I saw the beauty of the supernatural sound engine (I love having the acoustic emulations on the JP80 and the piano sounds are the most beautiful I've heard on a synth with serious nuance). So I ended up buying an 80, and it is my main master controller. They keybed is 11/10 and the build quality is too (same as on the JPX), but it makes an amazing master midi controller and is very easy to set up and split multiple layers across the 76 keys or however you choose, the d-beam is hilariously fun and the synth sounds are huge on it. Editing is a chore unless somehow you have access to the old iPad app (which would be soooo awesome to have {and doubly awesome if they want to make one for the X}). I love it though.
      The Jupiter-X does 'synth' way better. WAY better. its way more playable as a synthesizer than controller and its very fun to make sounds and even play with the built in speakers. it will not replace my 80 as a master controller, or for its piano/acoustic sounds. but you can load some comparable sounds in there if you needed to. its something a lot more akin to the jp8 in name but with all the capability a modern Jupiter should have. people have been skeptical about it not being ACB but most of the response shows a lot of people prefer the sound to ACB even.

    Did I hear stepping when you swept the filter COF?? Very UN Jupiter... (very un- Roland) Filter sweeping is a REALLY important performance function and should be smooth rather than digitally stepping through the values. Your thoughts?

    • @richardbates1
      @richardbates1 4 года назад

      The JPX and Xm filters and resonance have 1024 digital steps as compared to the usual 127 steps on most VA's, the System 8 filter has 256 digital steps I think?. I have the Xm, the filters are smoooth!

      I bet it’s an update thing. This Jupiter STEPPPSSS... or jumps rather when you are doing fast sweeps. It’s a pre-release model though and I don’t have any drivers or updates or manual so I’m hoping the first update will give me MX-1 compatibility and fix the filter sweeps

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  4 года назад

      The effects are killllller on the JPX so that might make a difference but I bet the base oscillators are a little “meatier” as they are sample based not VA

    • @Paul_Y_T

    • @troypol343
      @troypol343 4 года назад +2

      I have used the xm and I have a System-8. The System-8 behaves more like the classic analog synths but the Jupiter-xm did not. If you play a single note on the xm you would not notice but I noticed that there was some phasing or flanging when you play the analog emulation/models with a longer release and repeated the same notes on the xm. You get the same effect on the Gais, also the SH-201, and JP-8000 and Vsynth. I have had all of those in the past too. The System-8 and even the boutiques so not behave like those. So I notice there is a difference between the ACB of the System-8 and what the Jupiter Xs uses, ABM.

    • @Paul_Y_T
      @Paul_Y_T 4 года назад +2

      @@troypol343 which we spent time looking in to when it was raised on gearslutz and there was a simple fix because the ACB doesn't layer voices for a repeated same note. The xm defaults to layering it (voice assign=limit") but it could be set to work like ACB via "voice assign=single".

  • @bilonggrisimmeri

    In 2020 there's a lot of highly desirable synths out there, so thanks Mt T for exploring JupiterX. I did a bit of exploring of my own and uncovered a shocking fact (or not, depending on your opinion). One of JupiterX's banks of waveforms is identical to those in JD-XA. It gets worse! They are in a different order, which to me suggests trying to make this less obvious, unless you're a nerd like me. It took me ages to tick off the waveform names, one-by-one, but eventually the truth emerged. I'm wondering if any other of these "building blocks" are duplicated, such as in other waveform banks or in other products?

    • @MRTUNA
      @MRTUNA  4 года назад

      I think there is a lot more similarities to the JDXA and the JP80 than Roland hopes people let in on, but it really does come together quite nicely for a synth based on tech a little short of bleeding edge.

    • @bilonggrisimmeri
      @bilonggrisimmeri 4 года назад +3

      @@MRTUNA Recycling is a good thing. We all need to recycle more! I'm less sure about re-cycling audio waveforms and code in a synth manufacture's product lines. Go too far down that road and all you get with a new synth is pretty buttons and a cool case.

    • @MakeMagic
      @MakeMagic 4 года назад

      That's pretty good news, depending on how you look at it...
      Like I have a JDXA and I'd be really tempted to sell to part fund an JPX if its got all of its waves built in...
      How many JDXA waves does the X actually have - is it all 450? I mostly just use the D50 bell and JD800 airy type stuff.

      @MakeMagic 4 года назад

      @@MRTUNA Yeah diving through the JDXA manual and it does look like it's a JP80 in a smaller, cheaper shell.

    • @bilonggrisimmeri
      @bilonggrisimmeri 4 года назад

      @@MakeMagic I really don't have time to go through all of JupiterX waveform banks, but there's probably more duplication of waveforms than those I laboriously compared. E.g. organ and stereo paired waveforms, which are in different banks on JupiterX. Code for many effects cound be identical too. I will keep my JD-XA because of the 4 voice analogue, as this is my first true analogue synth. Maybe less character than others, with limited MOD matrix, but still analogue, unlike JupiterX.

    Glad you got this video out there as I haven't seen much. I would like to vote for an extensive ACB v ACM comparison. The System 8 has been on my watch list for so long, but I never pulled the trigger because it was plastic, had no aftertouch, and only had 49 keys that some have described as "short-travel" or whatever. It seemed to me a better investment in that price range would be the DSI Rev 2 and others that have better quality. But I pre-ordered the X already because it has all of those things, so I REALLY want to know how it sounds comparatively, both solo and in a mix, with the S8. Also, one of your other viewers stated the differences might have to do with the settings... putting the voice assign limit to "single" rather than "limit"...

      the build quality for one is leagues ahead of the system-8, but it has 32x the polphony and you can stack 4 synths on top of each other than just going bi-timbral on the s8 (which is 4 voice each). it also has a really punchy drum track built in as well with all the classic Roland sounds. The new Jupiters can actually achieve better emulations of the classic Roland synths. After I got a System-8, I sold the Jupiter-80 and 50 because I decided I wanted more of a classic analog sound than what they could give me. The New JupierXs are improved in that area (along with more physical controls) but the ACB in the System-8 (and boutiques) I believe is still superior in recreating not just the characteristics of those old synths but the way they behave.

I wish the System8 was in this body with 16v, aftertouch and 5 octaves but 🤷‍♀️

      Pernett Media that being said this is a pre-release model so it hasn’t had any time for updates or anything yet. That might be solved upcoming

      One thing to look out for is that you may find you’re adjusting an offset (-64 to 63) rather than directly adjusting the high-res setting and its full 1024 range. My Xm defaulted to this behavior before the first firmware update (now fixed), so this may be an X pre-release issue

      ingoodmusic give me a few more days to get to the bottom of it but sound genuinely good and the build quality is like a real Jupiter should be. I am still trying to figure out the menu the easiest way though!

      @@MRTUNA Sorry I should clarify... does it support using original patches... For example... the D05 is really really close to the D50, and you can use patches or custom patches for the original D50 on the D05. The Ju-08 however couldn't.

    Roland isn’t reissuing analog gear for a reason. They have taken digital to heights no one has seen before.

      Yeah... right up to the BASE RUNG of the ladder already mounted by Sequential and Korg with OB-6 and Prologue. Digital will not replace analog. This sounds shit.
