    Smart slanted blocks (stairs, slopes, neat automatic adjustment like flat walls).
    Could pave way for infrastructure, faster travel and wheeled vehicles.

    Block stability. For example:
    - Collapsable blocks (sand, soil, snow) must be supported by a minimum number of blocks in the layer beneath.
    - An unstable block slides into one of the empty blocks beneath
    This makes stable building materials (stone, brick, wood, ...) more valuable.

    Survival gameplay:
    - Safety (dangerous creatures)
    - Nutrition (makes farming more functional)
    - Food storage/preservation (vermin, spoilage)
    - Temperature (makes shelters/clothes/fire more functional)
    - Seasons (based on orbits, calls for planning and food storage)

    I've only half been paying attention to this development, but this is the first time I realized that the plan included multiple worlds. I thought it was going to be focused on individual planets as your saves. Please don't let scope creep screw you over. It might be a good idea to focus on single planets for a while before expanding to more.

    planetsmith is such a unique idea and i'm really curious as to how it's going to turn out.
    I personally have a hard time seeing a hexagonal grid working (not to mention 12 random pentagons and warping), but with enough work i think it's possible.

      @FairySnailWorkshop indeed, but I think once you get used to the system, many more different shapes emerge, then you just gotta be creative. The cubes are not intrinsic to human nature or biology

    4:09 If the planets are small enough you might be able to get away with using integers for some coordinate storage instead of floats, never not a good time to swap some floats out for integers!

      And if the planets vary in size too much then you can just have planets above a certain size use floats and planets below that size use integers.

    Oh, and for any sort of enemy that will come in large groups you can get away with storing each enemy's health as just a single byte, alongside one to three floats collectively shared for the whole group, if you know the enemies aren't going to stray far from a certain range of health then you can just use one float representing overflow from the enemies not being able to store the amount of damage done to them in their single byte, however if the enemies can heal quite frequently you'll have to also store a group minimum health and maximum health, personally I recommend just going with the one float option in most all cases though it means that if the enemies are healing too quickly they may just start healing the whole group collectively and then start having extra to spare alongside that, but if that happens it means the player is doing terribly and deserves it anyway, the biggest benefit to the one float option is that having a minimum and maximum will mean that you'll have to readjust each enemy's stored health every time the minimum and maximum health are altered. Overall, this method has proven itself quite effective at least for me.

    37:00 LOL you haven't seen people play Minecraft for the first time. The youtuber About Oliver screamed and started shaking in his first encounter with an Enderman!
    Edit: 44:28 Actually the deepest mand made hole is Kola Superdeep Borehole SG-3 which is 12.2km deep!

      4km seems to be the deepest anyone has physicaly gone (inisde the crust) at Mponeng Gold Mine in South Africa

    This is useful for optimizations, but don't forget that the direct binary representation of a float can be used for sorting your 3d space for easier use later, this is great if you have a bunch of enemies that are spread out way too far for any grid structure to handle.

    Monsters could come from over the horizon in singleplayer or a small multiplayer server. In a large server there would be too many overlapping FOVs and you would see monsters spawn on the edge of somebody else's horizon.

    Hi, I just found another voxel game called Seed Of Andromeda. It's amazing! It has a solar system with procedurally generated planets and it even has block physics so trees fall when you chop down the trunk.
    Sadly, it was abandoned 6 years ago! But the developers made it open source so it might come in handy for Planet Smith.

    would love it if you did these kinds of streams like monthly or something! hopefully that wouldn't be too much work, this seemed like a fairly lowkey operation. i especially wanna hear what you think about my idea regarding block states (titled Better Solution to Smart Blocks) because i really think it would fit in the game perfectly

    If this game ends up having many star sistems, will it have a realistic skybox that shows where the stars are realistically?

    i think you might be downplaying how effective a little horror can be, it doesn’t have to get gory or anything, just think about cave noises in mc. maybe a little bit of fog could creep up on the surface of a more dangerous planet..? plus a lot of ppl find comfort in fear or ‘what could happen’. ik, very far off from now, but just something to consider
    ig another way of putting this suggestion would be, it might be fun to have unsettling ambiences form based on time, location, or the combination of both.

      Scary yes, horror no your suggestions are in the scary category to me. When I think of horror it has to be very intense.

      Oh I brushed over that too quickly. Will be completely customiseable, there won't be a set main character. That thread turned into a huge character design discussion
