I decided to teach myself guitar right before the pandemic started. I tried my very hardest. I came close to doing what you said as the first steps. All of these years, and, I only got to where chords come in, and, I skipped a bit, and learned some hammer ons and some percussive moves, as, it gave it interest to me, but, I think it does not come naturally to me. I still struggle and am absolutely stuck at this place. I played religiously throughout the pandemic, as, it was a healthy and creative way to get through that time. As much as I practiced, I still had trouble. Still do to this day. My question is, even though I practice, I still am muting the strings, even though I am using the tips of my fingers, and barre chords are just not working. I mute everything. Is there a trick to this? I watched videos on these things, but, nobody shows close ups of really what they are doing. A guitar teacher would be great, yet, I am just a bit nervous, so, I am trying to do this on my own. Haha. Anyway, if there is some other way to learn barre chords, that would be GREAT. Sorry for the length of this. I rarely ever write comments, so, my apologies.

It does not require tabs, or anything beyond the guitar itself. WhadoUthink?

Btw, I wanna purchase a course from Udemy called Complete Guitar Lessons System - Beginner to Advanced (By Erich Andreas)

Yes! Try to find a good balance that keeps you eager to learn and doesn't make it feel like a chore. If you're learning songs try to learn ones that will stretch your abilities and teach you new things along the way!

We’ll it all depends on what style you want to master. This video was focused on becoming a fingerstyle guitarist, but many of the first steps apply to pretty much any style. Once you start to advance is where you should begin to specialize in whatever style you wish to play!

Tabs are fine, but try to ween off them. Even if you’re only finding a note here or there with your ears, that’s a start. Practice makes perfect! Rock on 🎸

*A Power Chord IS NOT a Root and Fifth.*
The power in Power Chord is the Root played twice along with the fifth. It is the double resonance of the root and itself one octave higher that gives it the power.
A root - fifth is a dyad or what some might say double stop.
Also your recommended way lacks foundation to understand how to play guitar in relation to how to make music.

    • @O.R.-Guitar

Thanks for the correction! I think my path was less rigorous in theory and technical learning than others, but it allows you to develop a good feel for guitar, in my experience.

@@O.R.-Guitar Cool. Most learning the guitar either get stuck or give up precisely because they tried to learn by someone's hacks.
But learning that way locks one into a dogma.
While chords might have shapes because chords are static, scales do not. Scales are dynamic. Scales played are runs, sequences.
People who teach "shapes" for pentatonic minor are doing damage to budding guitarists.
Learning by intervals, one learns by music, which is dynamic.
