The 79 Salem's Lot is arguably the best vampire movie ever made. I remember when this debuted. I was 9 years old at the time and as a horror fan, this blew my mind.
One of the best television adaptations of a Stephen King novel and James Mason was awesome. I also saw Return to Salem ' Lot with Michael Moriarty and it was pretty good. Be safe and well everyone 💗😊🤗🙏
The miniseries has its own distinctive look, too bad they didn't bother to adapt the absolute glee King conveys as the vampires start to outnumber the humans, numerous character asides that are straight out of EC comics. It also doesn't help that they combined teacher Matt, Dr Jimmy and Father Callahan into one character... all whose faiths were tested against the simplicity of Mark's "Death is when the monster gets you" and found lacking... oh God, they neglected to adapt the theme of the novel. It also doesn't help they jumbled the events of the novel: Susan's death, Mark's imprisonment, Straker's death, Barlow's... everything. OK, if I had to point to one thing, it would be Barlow. His chiding Father Callahan while he killed Mark's parents is not something you can convey even with James Mason showing up out of nowhere to speak for his master. They need to remake this one, readapt the plot properly. [Remembers the Rob Lowe "thing"] They need to reremake this one. It's not that I don't like Hooper's version, it's just that I love the novel.
I don't care, no offense intended. :-) Movies often have to cut a lot of material in order to translate to the screen. Salem's Lot is still an effective tale, well written, good performances, lots of atmosphere, and some truly scary vampires. It is a great movie regardless of the deviations to the source material. I understand being a purist to source material, but I can generally separate a movie from the book unless the movie truly goes out of the way to hurt the source material. I don't think this old mini-series did that. I think it is a great example of old school film making that is far superior to what we get now, and it has helped introduce many people to Stephen King over the decades. The 2004 miniseries was closer to the book, but it was pretty bad and the vampires were laughable. We will see what this new remake offers up.
I just watched this last night after reading the book not too long ago. I understand changing certain things from the source material to fit a certain medium but it really could’ve been a lot better.
This is what scared the crap out of me as a kid. The scene with the kid hovering outside, scratching on the window....dude. straight traumatized my 7 year old self.
I remember watching this on t.v. in 1979 and being scared out of my wits, when the kids became vampires, but after listening to your funny running commentary, I'm feeling much better now!
4:30= It's totally canon in my head now that Walt Disney got his start as Barlowe's day-guardian half-vampire apprentice! It explains so much about Disney! They should have included that really creepy part in the book where Straker keeps threatening to castrate young Mark, saying he's going to make him a "Satanic choirboy". Or the line "I have made sacrifice for his favor, with my left hand I bring it!" I love Stephen King's quotation of Wallace Steven's poem"The Emperor of Ice Cream" in Salem's Lot-one of the greatest and most subtle poems ever written about death.
Its kind of hard considering this as horror when you have Fred Willard in it. It is like he went too the wrong set on the way to a Christopher Guest movie. Is it just me or does David Soul look like a grown version of that kid actor in Luciano Fulcis movies. Was it Bob we called him?

18:26- A Goosebumps joke from earlier, and now a Jaws joke here? Wow, I'm getting ahead of you with this episode.
20:38- The Bruce Willis movie? Ah, I love that movie.
23:56- (As Chief Wiggum) We think we're dealing with a supernatural being, most likely a mummy. As a precaution, I've ordered the Egyptian wing of the Springfield Museum destroyed.
26:45- I thought Grown-Up Bob was Giovanni Lombardo Radice in City of the Living Dead.
Love the outtake you left in.
So looking forward to your World War III review.
"You wanna tie me up? I can get out of any knot. Try me -- hands behind the back."
"Uh...no, this is getting weird, son." 🤣
"Could you not that's the houses dick." I laugh too at that joke 🤣 😂
Dude I’ve watched this like 12 times over 2 years, sooooo good. Great work Senor Gremlin
Brad still trapped in the closet.
Him and Doug will admit they're a couple one day 😂
Far Cry Has All The Hot Guys that, or make an overly-long miniseries
@@joelgordon7814 Just keep R. Kelly out of it. CA doesn't need another pedophilia problem.
Gotta get his butter cream action in
Everyone keeps saying “now that you’re stuck at home it’s lots of time on your hands...” am I the only person still working as normal during this pandemic. I have t had any extra days off. I’m kind of jealous of all of you people who are “forced” to stay home .
Many are still working (I am) but we can't seek recreation or entertainment outside of our homes. Hence, even us working folk are watching more videos/TV etc.
I’m not jealous that I can still pay my bills.
The 79 Salem's Lot is arguably the best vampire movie ever made. I remember when this debuted. I was 9 years old at the time and as a horror fan, this blew my mind.
Thank you Snob! I have been waiting for this one!
“I don’t care if that is your Brother you DO NOT let that thing in your house!” 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Has anyone noticed that his kids bedroom is the size of a whole apartment And this is in the 70s
Yep, chick lair gone to waste here....
Bedrooms were bigger. Mine had 3 windows. Canopy bed with full dresser & mirror. Matching vanity & bed table. Big closet too.
One of the best television adaptations of a Stephen King novel and James Mason was awesome. I also saw Return to Salem ' Lot with Michael Moriarty and it was pretty good. Be safe and well everyone 💗😊🤗🙏
James Mason as Mr. Straker.
"I think you will enjoy Mr. Barlow. And I think that he will enjoy you."
I absolutely agree with you. This movie is a slap in the face to the book
I just watched this last night after reading the book not too long ago. I understand changing certain things from the source material to fit a certain medium but it really could’ve been a lot better.
@Jamie Braswell
Okay, boomer.
Agreed
Perfect timing for lunch! Keep up the good work, Brad!
This is what scared the crap out of me as a kid. The scene with the kid hovering outside, scratching on the window....dude. straight traumatized my 7 year old self.
Absolutely hilarious, Brad. Great job!
I remember watching this on t.v. in 1979 and being scared out of my wits, when the kids became vampires, but after listening to your funny running commentary, I'm feeling much better now!
I met Lloyd Kaufman of Troma at a film fest in Sydney.
He was drunk(ish). I would expect nothing less.
RIP Fred Willard
4:30= It's totally canon in my head now that Walt Disney got his start as Barlowe's day-guardian half-vampire apprentice!
It explains so much about Disney! They should have included that really creepy part in the book where Straker keeps threatening to
castrate young Mark, saying he's going to make him a "Satanic choirboy". Or the line "I have made sacrifice for his favor, with my left hand I bring it!" I love Stephen King's quotation of Wallace Steven's poem"The Emperor of Ice Cream" in Salem's Lot-one of the greatest and most subtle poems ever written about death.
I actually heard a fan theory that Barlow is Pennywise! 😂🤔
Impossible, Barlow is far too terrifying.
Everyone needs pennywise in every King book. Stop trying to make pennywise in every King book happen, world.
Loved the unsolved mystery throwback/skit
Its kind of hard considering this as horror when you have Fred Willard in it. It is like he went too the wrong set on the way to a Christopher Guest movie. Is it just me or does David Soul look like a grown version of that kid actor in Luciano Fulcis movies. Was it Bob we called him?
Imagine Bob singing. Aggghh!
@@Emulous79 Soul's effort in that area was so-so enough.
Snob makes that reference to Bob in the review.
The Greatest Vampire Film of ALL TIME....
Truth
Straight up 😎
without a doubt one of my favorite TObe Hooper movies. Never got the hate. Im a massive fan of the book and i must say is actually pretty accurate
One thing about living in Salem's Lot I never could stomach. All the damn vampires!
You never fail to entertain but this one was particularly funny. Thanks!
29:18: Thanks for leaving that in, Cinema Snob. This was the extra cherry on top of an already great banana split.
Any chance of some tromaville or night of the demons reviews
Awesome thanks for covering this one!
