I really hate this "I'm too tired to actually rap or sing" vibe 70% of these hits have. Like come on, what happened to energy in pop and rap? Now it's just mumbling your next lyrics like you're trying to talk to your crush with anesthetics.
Yeah and that's why a lot of popular (mumble) rap songs just drone and mix together in my head. I don't listen to them and when one is on the radio or somewhere else it just feels like the same one over and over again. The only track from Post Malone I know (by name) is Rockstar, which I could kinda get behind but the other ones just feel like background noise
can you tell me names of rappers who actually do that? Because "mumble rapping" is used to basically describe any modern trap rapper while actually beside from like Lil Pump, Lil Yachty and some unknown artists, most famous rapper actually care to articulate and sometime even sing
I feel like this problem stems from the fact you're listening to the charts and radio, energy in hip hop has never been more alive and raw. JPEGMAFIA Denzel Curry Kids See Ghosts Brockhampton J.I.D Vince Staples noname Pusha-T Travis Scott Thank me later, the mumble rap vibe is something that takes a bit of time to get, you appreciate more the use of vocal chopping, adlibs, and the trippy uses of production, it used to be that there was one artist that held every custom of rap, like a biggie or jay z, energy lyricism and consciousness in one artists but now the landscape has broadened so much that we have more artists specific to a genre, we've become more connected with the personas of one raw ability and a good ear can detect when its done well, Lil Pump, Playboi carti, Ski Mask, all in the mumble rap genre but are so different in terms of flow, style and ability. Dont narrow you're ears as soon as you hear an 808, it used to be the same when guitars were the only thing you'd hear in the charts so people tuned out because they just told themselves 'it all sounds the same" for the sake of nothing more then a sense of pretentious unity , you need to respect the genre and the artists before you learn to appreciate them, this genre isn't meant to entice you lyrically but lyrics are the centre of the song so it's understandable that it becomes confusing, most of these guys are just there for you to peak behind the drug and gang culture, if thats not something that interests you then fine but you can't sit there an say it isn't hypnotising and at the very least fascinating...

Holy shit, when he played Wrecking Ball I suddenly was like, "Wow, that actually sounds really good, why did I hate it?" And then I remembered - but the fact that current pop music makes that song feel like a breath of fresh air is the saddest thing of all.
And neither do people. It always amazes me when society forgets someone's actions after they die. They suddenly forget how they all joined in on the judging bash fest when someone dies. I call it the Whitney Houston effect. She was practically forgotten other than to make fun of her by the time she died. The day of her death tho everyone rushed out to gush about how much they loved her and how great she was. I was like "that's not what yall said yesterday". With just one news report a singer can go from not being able to fill a show in Vegas to being the most downloaded in the world. All they have to do is die. It would be nice if people acted like that b4 someone dies instead of after. It's pointless after they are dead.

I actually kinda like Delicate. It's catchy enough to gnaw at your brain for weeks on end but forgettable enough so that you can barely remember the lyrics unless someone puts on a karaoke version. It sounds like something you'd expect to hear on one of those half-assed teen dramas on the CW but only marginally better.
I can't believe someone finally agrees with me about Taylor Swift. She talks so much about her reputation when there are SO many other people who have terrible reputations. It's crazy, I don't know. It's really the only reason I don't like her or her music.
There is a different tho. You can have a 'bad reputation' for being an awful person, you have super popular rappers, etc that are literally murderers, but that reputation barely makes a difference for them or people's perceptions of them. Even hated people like Justin Biber- he really had to do a lot for his reputation to become super bad. For a 'sweetheart' girl like Taylor Swift that in her first years seemed so sweet with all her charities and being so nice and having 0 controversies, never saying anything wrong or even drinking alcohol or swearing, etc totally pure image, the slightest thing she did was blown out of proportion and ripped apart. That disproportionate level of hate compared to her 'crimes' made her obsess and lash out.
honestly I think that the 1989 album was Taylor Swift's best era, and I feel like that was because she hit the right balance of self-awareness about her public image without being obsessed with it. She was willing to play with that, to acknowledge in her songs that the relationships she was singing about were whirlwind celebrity romances. On reputation she just went way overboard. Oh and also her songwriting ability took a massive downturn lol
The irony is that the only thing that ruined her reputation was her obsession with her reputation. Every drama she had before the album did almost nothing to hurt her performance or her fan base
People need to chill. This is a comedy video. Todd has put plenty of songs i like on his worst lists over the years (Roar, My First Kiss, Take it Off, Shake It Off), and I have literally never been offended at any of his criticisms or jokes.
I really hate how a bunch of people think rap nowadays is just "mumble rap", when there's a ton of amazing new school rappers such as: Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Denzel Curry, J.I.D, Mick Jenkins, Tyler, The Creator, IDK, Flatbush Zombies, Logic, Joyner Lucas, Capital Steez, Joey Bada$$ and the list goes on. Rap is more than mumbling.
Even the “mumblers” are innovating with production and delivery and making their voices more of a rhythmic tool. Listen to Playboi Carti, D Savage, Uzi, and Uno the Activist.
Yeah not all mumble rap is bad i know that, but i'm talking to the people that think that rap is just mumble rap. I actually enjoy quite a few mumble rappers.
15:12 I love how Todd’s humor never changes and he’s always a goof. As a long time viewer, any of these pop song reviews always takes me back to 2012 and that’s why I like them. For some reason this type of nostalgia feels nice.
A lot of people are defending the songs/saying Todd's criticism isn't detailed enough. Honestly, I have no problems with his criticism, and he did point out at the beginning that 2018 wasn't as bad as other years. Of course he is gonna have some better sounding songs on the list. (Personal Opinion: I don't like any of the songs on the list. They all sound the same to me)
How they sound has absolutely everything to do with the song. The song is built on sound. He also criticizes lyrics extensively, unless there's something I'm missing.
I'm starting to feel sorry that I was so negative about the aggressively-offensive songs that were coming out back in 2008-2009. At least they were interesting. These past two years have just been... nothing... bland... dead... unmemorable... NOTHING exciting or fun. Ugh. >_
The feeling I get from today's music is...emptiness. Like it's all sung by stale people that had their souls sucked out before they started recording. Yeah, there are some exceptions, but the majority is why I dont listen to the radio anymore. EDIT: I wanna make myself clear. 1: I said that there are exceptions to today's music. I'm not denying that there are good songs out there, because there are, and yes, you have a right to your opinion. I just personally don't like most of the songs coming out, that's all. If you want me to respect your opinions (which I do), please respect that I have one too. Thank you. 2: "who even listens to radio anymore?" I get the point of that, I really do. There are many ways to listen to music now. But you can't listen to RUclips on the go now without downloading the music app and/or paying premium for no ads, which some people can't afford. I personally just search RUclips on my laptop for good music, I use shazam to find out the name of the songs I hear that I like, and I even sometimes browse online radio stations, so I'm not only relying on car radios as my source of music.
You're looking for good music in the wrong place. 2018 has been a great year for music but if all you listen to is the radio then you'll never get that.
On my rock station they play Shinedown and Brent Smith is giving his all in every single song. He feels the lyrics he's singing, so much so that it brings tears to my eyes sometimes.

Taylor's actually putting out a new album this next year! She's said in the past that she doesn't want to make the same album twice, hence the switch from country (Red) to pop (1989) and reputation. She's also said that reputation was purely a cathartic album, and that she's going back to writing normal music. I have high hopes for TS7!!

@fleshnbone187nah I dislike the xan gnashing droning of some artists as well, but disparaging an entire decade of music under a blanket statement, while simultaneously praising another with more blanket statements is obtuse and isn't becoming of someone who calls themselves a reviewer or critic.
Robert Morris don’t get me wrong, I don’t agree with all of Todd’s opinions. Even way before this video he’s stated some opinions on music that I didn’t agree with, but despite that I still enjoy his videos. If there was one defining sound this year, I would have to say "Clap or finger snap on the 4th beat" with a drum machine. Music was so light and boring this year. It was so damn lifeless. This "Clap or snap with the drum machine" even took over in goddamned country music too. It was everywhere. You couldn't get away from it. Count how many songs in this list had that. There were no real drums or when there were, there was no snare. There was a drum machine clap or snap on the fourth beat.
Can this super light, dull, boring, "Clap, finger snap" beat, that everyone in the world is copying, be traced back to anyone who started this trend? Who used it, made a lot of $$$ with it, and caused all the copycats with this boring sound? I seem to recall some.. variation in rythm before this new rythm kind of came out of nowhere and all of a sudden, all the pop stars were using it. The drums all of a sudden was this slow slog of.. "Boop.... snap....... boop..................snap......." Yawwwwwn! Like someone had intentionally took the drum machine and just.. turned it all the way down to zero and turned off all the good elements like snares and toms and hi-hats and fills that give the tunes interest.

my big issue with your remarks on Ed Sheeran is that here in the UK, Ed has had a large crossover with Rap even starting his career with a mix of rap and singing (example - Young Guns). He worked with a lot of UK rappers for years such as Devlin and Stormzy (check out Devlin - (all along the) watchtower, Ft Ed). Lmao, Wiley even had beef with him because he said Ed had came up in popularity due to his involvement in the grime scene.
Turbo Nipples also don’t forget how he, devlin and example were inseperable mates and his collabs with SBTV. Ed isn’t just a ‘pop/rap hook singer’ he developed amongst the uk grime and rap scenes and deserves to be recognised as a multi-skilled artist
@Inglejuice That's just your opinion and pop music has ALWAYS been for the kids. We should at least acknowledge that pop is an ever evolving genre, and no type of music is ever the best. Kids now will mostly hate modern music 40 years from now.
The genre is irrelevant. What is missing in current music is songwriting. There are NO songs. The song is something that has consistently been the heart of popular music going all the way to Bach and Handel all the way through the Sousa marches which would just dominate songs with lyrics and in the 20th century when they began multi track recording them they would dominate the charts for weeks. The ridiculous mind numbing garbage in this video couldnt even dominate the world of nursery rhymes.

Thank me later, the mumble rap vibe is something that takes a bit of time to get, you appreciate more the use of vocal chopping, adlibs, and the trippy uses of production, it used to be that there was one artist that held every custom of rap, like a biggie or jay z, energy lyricism and consciousness in one artists but now the landscape has broadened so much that we have more artists specific to a genre, we've become more connected with the personas of one raw ability and a good ear can detect when its done well, Lil Pump, Playboi carti, Ski Mask, all in the mumble rap genre but are so different in terms of flow, style and ability.

The irony is that nobody else talks or even cares as much about Taylor Swift's reputation as Taylor Swift does
honestly I think that the 1989 album was Taylor Swift's best era, and I feel like that was because she hit the right balance of self-awareness about her public image without being obsessed with it.

@Carlo Mejia There's plenty of music being produced that I love. Just generally not on the pop charts.
Also I wholeheartedly agree about Camila Cabello. I can't stand her voice.
So many butthurt people on this video because they don’t agree with Todd’s opinions even though all his videos (especially the top 10 lists) are over-exaggerated for comedic effect. You kids must be new to his channel
So many dick riders who Stan for somebody regardless of how shit the things they put out are. This is just a list for people who hate new popular music and feels more like a hipster circle jerk than actual commentary.
Even if he has a lot of bias in his videos (which he does), he still makes it clear that he doesn’t consider himself a professional critic and puts his focus on entertainment above all else
Exactly
Robert Morris this channel ans his commentary is supposed to be a joke , if you watch his other videos it’ll make sense plus he likes some new ‘rap’ songs as well
If there was one defining sound this year, I would have to say "Clap or finger snap on the 4th beat" with a drum machine.
Like someone had intentionally took the drum machine and just.. turned it all the way down to zero and turned off all the good elements like snares and toms and hi-hats and fills that give the tunes interest.
the radio is not all music moron
@@JaneEticFailure When did I even mention, "Radio" in my post? What exactly are you trying to say that you're suddenly so... angry and hostile?
@@BlackburnBigdragon "music was so light and boring this year" yeah definitely not. All that bland stuff you hear on the radio, sure.
@@JaneEticFailure Of course. And by all means, I'm not advocating listening ONLY to music on the radio or ONLY to the crap that the corporations shovel into our gobs when we venture out into stores or see movies or watch TV shows. This is what I mean by "This stuff is everywhere.". It's all over our media. You NEED to hit the internet and hunt and find and search to find new and interesting stuff that the corporations aren't going to even give a chance and the stuff is out there. But what I'm referring to IS the sound of the mass media. Not the overall tidal wave of choice that we have on the internet. There's NEVER going to be an "Overall defining sound" for that. It's just too varied. There's too much.
"There's a lot of restraining orders in your future." Looking back there really wasn't much in the way of a future.
What was a 2018?
A miserable little pile of songs!
But enough shitty jams! Have at you!
@Omega Hakim Ty, someone with a mind of their own 🙏
dumbtune Got it when people don’t like the crap music we get nowadays they’re just being sheeps, and no the rare amazing song doesn’t count. Great, we have edgy people who are not part of the crowd.
@@nykerianash1590 'Tis a pity that you were born in the wrong generation.
It seems these last few years that the pop music scene has severely lacked direction. We've had so much industry interference this decade that these acts are just producing the same crap over and over again. Fingers crossed something comes along to inject some energy into the arse of musical culture.
I want Daft Punk again.
@@halfpintrr I'll be honest I was never a huge fan. I was there in their hay day and they were very much of their time. I tried their last album and really wanted to enjoy it, but since then there had been so many other acts like them (Justice were a good example) that were offering more to the table and it just seemed to me like a step back.
Wow, this makes me feel wrong. This is far too early and I have yet to know the hits. You gotta give me a few years, Todd.
"So this might legitimately be the end game for Taylor"

Honestly I liked psycho because it was catchy. I don't care if the lyrics are stupid, it's catchy.
Catchy doesnt equal good
Justin Jake Tabasa ur part of the problem
Let her enjoy the fucking song geeze
thats your problem right there, you said you dont care
biggest normie of 2018. you win
my big issue with your remarks on Ed Sheeran is that here in the UK, Ed has had a large crossover with Rap even starting his career with a mix of rap and singing (example - Young Guns). He worked with a lot of UK rappers for years such as Devlin and Stormzy (check out Devlin - (all along the) watchtower, Ft Ed). The precedent was there, however, I just don't feel that it works for the US.
He even won an award in 2014 for urban music
Prior to being huge too, he had a whole EP called 'No. 5 Collaborations Project' which every song had a collaboration with a grime artist on it. He's not dipping his toes in this.
I really like 'The A Team' but I don't think you comprehend you're being over-opinionated and acting like things you don't like are objectively shit. You listen to Lil Pump, 21 savage in a song with a Migos who makes the most watered down trap music for people who don't like trap music with the same production style that was hot 7 years ago. All three of those artists are huge because suburban kids who haven't heard anything else think they're gangster. "It’s music for people who don’t like music lol" No diss-respect, but most the people listening to this music, are kids, who are the intended audience. Being an adult who psychoanalyzes Pop music is showing how inept someone is in understanding its purpose. It's for young people.
Love your taste in music otherwise (your favorites list is pretty great).
@Inglejuice Hahaha, yeah but who doesn't have a few guilty pleasure songs? I can't help but fucking love 'Rollin' by Limp Bizkit even though I know its really poorly written.
You took that better than 99.9% anyone on RUclips. I legitimately appreciate you allowing that and the funk & soul jams as public. Also, I got mad love for you just simply for having Kool Keith in that shit. Dude is one of most underrated, influential rappers of all time and most people don't even know who he is. I think we actually have a bunch similar tastes in music. :)
People should stop acting as if music is dying, especially this year. 2018 is waaaay better than 2017. A lot of great releases from a lot of great artists and there were also some unexpected breakout stars. 10 and 9 aren't even that bad compared to 8 to 1.
@@ordinarychef What? I wasn't even talking about Todd, I was referring to a big chunk of people, especially in the comments section. Lazy? I don't even listen to the radio.
@@ordinarychef Check Can This Even Be Called Music? It's a great website that has helped me find A LOT of weird, fresh music. Especially recommend their monthly round-ups.
Personally, I agree that Camila Cabello’s song, Never Be The Same, is all that great. However, in all honesty the first time I heard the line “All I need” in the falsetto I thought she said “Paula Deen”, which I know makes no sense but it cracks me up every time it plays on the radio because I can never hear it any other way. In my family, we call this the Paula Deen song as an inside joke.

Can I tell you how much I appreciate you going in on Camila, she’s freaking awful. She’s a terrible singer... I don’t understand why she’s popular.
People: complain that “Baby it’s Cold Outside” is a sexist song that shouldn’t be ever listened to again
Same people: favorite artist is any modern rapper
But no one actually complains about that
dumbtune This year they took it off of radio stations in some cities due to complaints from townspeople that it was offensive

Thanks for posting this though. Had a terrible day, was literally turning the light off to go to bed when I got this notification. Now I get a nice little laugh before bed.
I physically had to take my earbuds out while Camilla was "singing." It honestly hurt my ears to listen to it.
Well cats have great hearing so I feel for you
We should at least acknowledge that pop is an ever evolving genre, and no type of music is ever the best.
The Truth Channel Look at BTS Singularity, with subs
Lyrics aren't really important nowadays but this is something I bet you might enjoy, I haven't really been into pop
The Truth Channel Back then my grandparents said Rock was mindnumbing, undynamic energy
It's like saying today's youth sucks, when obviously, every generation of youth "sucks"
The big difference is when I was a teenager a huge amount of people my age hated the music at the time. Now my nephews are entering their teen years and they refuse to listen to anything on the radio. Everything they listen to is from the 70s and 80s.
The Truth Channel My friends from high school have only really stuck to the radio.. That's nice
I’m looking forward to that Thank You Next think-piece coming by the end of the week.
There was a time a few weeks ago when “Lucid Dreams” was the only song I heard at my job and I wanted to blow my brains out every time it came on, which was like once every hour.
