im a Brit i have been here since 1969. And i use this guys videos to show people in England who are thinking of moving down under what NZ is like. And Curls is as honest as the day is long.
Fat Bastard Pies from Invercargill are amazing. They have a subscription service accross NZ for mad keen pie lovers. Jimmy’s pies from Roxburgh have the best pastry and are so so good. Available in most South Island supermarkets.
I generally like bakery pies more than the commercial ones, my all time favorites are the Makatu Mussel Pie, and my local bakery steak and blue vein cheese pie. But runner ups are pepper steak, steak bacon and cheese.
If you genuinely think these supermarket pies are in the 9/10 range, I cant wait to see you’re ratings on bakery pies! While you’re at the bakery make sure to check out lolly cake aswell because that’s a big thing here in NZ! Keep up the great stuff, love to see you’re enjoying NZ
Brother, you’re missing out by not sampling BP and Z’s pies. Butter chicken (vegan if you can believe it) from BP and cheesy mushroom pie at Z petrol station. Chef’s kiss to both, mate. Gotta try them.
I grew up on the caltex ones. Then they changed the pie. Then they just consistently increase the price. Swear they were 2 for 4 bucks at my local less than 10 years ago. Now they're double that. Still have the sign outside saying that, but I think they should just stop advertising. Can get a 6 pack of frozen pies for the same cost, or go to a fancier place and spend a dollar more per pie. Guess it's still more convenient
"Who Ate All The Pies ?" is a gourmet brand of pies also available in hand pie size. Available in Wellington at Countdown supermarkets. Flavours include Chicken, Cranberry & Brie, and Venison Thyme & Red Wine
I miss the meat pies from the dairy. Here its the corner shop which have most things but hot meat pies. Once on my return from a trip to NZ, i packed some pies in my suitcase. Unfortunately, i had a stopover in Sydney & customs took them off me & chucked them in the bin.
I've grown up in NZ and nothing gives me the fondest memories as the smell of Big Ben pies on the air at primary school. But over the years most popular pies have gone down so dramatically, so small pie shop/bakery pies are the way to go. Best pies in Auckland I think are Muzzas Pies in Mt Albert.
Yep - but you gotta be in quick. I have seen queues going out the door and down the road. Wait until late and what you want may well have sold out. Oh well, everything they do is excellent - savoury pies, sausage rolls, custard pies, apple turnovers... They never skimp and I love how you can see them making everything while you stand in the shop waiting your turn. So if they run out of something I figure that means it's time to try something you haven't before. :-)
I feel awful but I laughed soo hard at the change of your facial expression from being blissfully excited to sooo let down by the lamb, rosemary and mint pie. Along with most others responses the bakery pies are far superior so I'm super excited for that review video.
I make Mince and Cheese pies using the Edmonds cookbook Shepherd's pie recipe for the Mince, pre-made frozen flaky Pastry, and Edam cheese. Super easy and delicious, you should try it.
Blow on the pie safer communities together lol! 😅 love it ! Best pies I've had are Sheffield pies bakery in Sheffield, I recommend👍 or Hillyers Canterbury region.
There is an existing "Pie Awards". It is a prestigious annual, black tie event. I was lucky enough to go to one. It had a "007" theme. Sponsored by a large supplier. It was a fantastic night, highly professional and well presented. To get a placing allows the bakers to print money.
Z Petrol station has been my go to for pies the past few years - their mince and cheese, SO GOOD. The American buffalo chicken pie from BP station is amazing. During high school I loved getting a Top Up pie from the dairy on a winter's morning, they're probably the grossest-looking pies because they're floppy and yellow but they have a special place in my heart lol. I remember being told all the time, "Don't you know they have a golf ball of fat in them?" hahaha
They look like these pies come from the supermarket. The Maketu pie is about an 1hr away from Rotorua, but if you come to Te Puke, there is a bakery called AA bakery. Top golden crunchy pastry steak and pepper pie.
Pies are generally better at Bakery's but cool to see some appreciation for these classics although there are branded pies with a much better depth of flavor then these. I recommend Ponsonby, Maketu and Dad's Pies.
The Maketu fish or Mussel pie are the best prepackaged pies if I can find it, but I usually settle for a big ben double steak & cheese or butter chicken if the bakeries aren't open. Would like to try the No8 pies particularly the steak & cheese, haven't seen them around the Waikato. Great video mate keep it up 👍👍
I'm a big meat eater but my sister inlaw is a vegan and introduced me to the Hub Gourmet Pies - Kumara & Cashew Vegan Pie and they're honest in my top 10 favourite pies. Really nice. Also my favorite Dairy type pie is Oxfords mince and cheese. Give those a try. You won't be disappointed.
You have to try a Fairlie Pie….my favourite is the Pepper Steak and my husbands favourite is the Pork Belly ….top selling and winners of everything south of Auckland 🥳
After returning from overseas and hearing people rave about the Fairlie battery pies I called in to try them. To be honest people seem to have been taken in by the hype. Good pies, but nothing to write home about, especially for the price they charge. There are much much better pies around
If you ever visit the southern part of the south island get a Jimmies pie. Their range is pretty good, unlike the others they don't come in plastic packaging but in paper, and I think that helps in the cooking resulting in a more flakey pastry. Their potato top is the best.
Jimmy’s pies 😍😍😍😍 they can only be found in the South Island though. Second best is Maketu, normally you can find them at supermarkets already hot in the warmer by the hot chickens. Irvines have gone foul as faaaark over the years but their bacon and egg still slap. Bakery pies always for the win these days, the bakehouse pies 😍😍 steak n cheese
Makatu pies are definitely the best!! The flakey pastry and the filling I love the mince and cheese🤤 You can also try a Couplands Pie, not my fav but popular in NZ 😁

As a kiwi living overseas, the very first I do when I return is track down a Coupland "Crusaders" pie (steak, cheers, kumara, and broccoli(don't let this put you off). In My opinion, best mass produced pie. Other things I craze and get in me ASAP, whittakers chocolate, Jelly Tip, Berry biscuit, or Creamy milk. Also, Sweet Thai clilli Doritos with sour cream. Moro Gold and chikito bars are also in my list. Keep up the good work, I approve. Haha
Maketu mussel pies are great if you love seafood!!! I've bought them from where they're made in Maketu, but also refrigerated from Countdown in Auckland.💕
Jimmy pies & PJ's Hanmer Springs - the South island masters of pies, Jimmy pies is a bucket list food stop for lunch(have a very light breakfast that day!!!), multiple fresh hot pies from their bakery shop - one is not enough!, and if you can't get the Jimmy pies fix in the upper south island its PJ's hanmer springs pies to the rescue. Around 30 years ago, I worked in a Bakery (Harry's Place, in Dargaville) At 1pm, after the lunch rush, the baker would go home and I would stay and serve/ clean. I always had lunch at 1pm between serving customers. My favorite lunch was that I would cut the top off one of Harry's Pies (incredible pastry), shove a handful of REAL cheese in it and put it back into the oven to heat up. (Microwaves don't do a pie justice) One day, Harry came back because he had forgotten something, saw me doing it and asked me what I was doing... I said 'Having Lunch'. Next day I went in, he had made 12 mince and cheese pies... They disappeared from the pie warmer... Next day Steak and mince, Steak and cheese... same result. Soon these two pies became the bakeries biggest sellers. Kauri Bakeries/ Dargaville picked it up and then Whangarei Bakeries... soon it was all over New Zealand... I mean Cheese goes with everything 😁 ... REAL cheese... not that processed stuff some bakeries shove in to save money. My new favorite is cheese and taretare sauce over hot chips... Don't think its caught on yet :)
Maketu Pies are now in Greymouth so they may be in Wellington now. I lived in Tauranga for 3 years and that's where I first tried them because Maketu, being a small seaside town in the Bay of Plenty have their own pie factory there. They are SO good, try the Seafood or Mussel pies.
I used to work at maketu pies. If you ever happen to come across a countdown then your definitely guaranteed to come across one of the maketu pies. Their best (in my opinion) is the smoked fish. Don't be shy to give it a try.
Best pie I ever had was from a bakery/cafe in Waiouru. Chicken and mushroom. Filling was shredded chicken in gravy, top wasn't pastry, it was a big portobello mushroom sprinkled with cheese then grilled yummy 😋 Not been up that way for many years so I don't know if the cafe is still there
Jimmy's mince pies, from Roxburgh, Central Otago. Andersons mince and cheese pies, from Harwera,Taranaki. Sunny days mince pies, from Napier, Hawkes Bay.
Irvines was an independent commercial baker, but then it was taken over by goodman fielder- an Aussie company, but now the whole shebang has its headquarters in Singapore- so sold off again.
g.a.s petrol station in Waikanae usually has maketu pies if they are not sold out. it’s a bit far out but the train ride or drive along the coast is beautiful on a nice day.
skip any pie in a plastic wrapper. gotta go to a real bakery. carefully eyeball the pastry. does it look too dry? usually the morning is a better time. some bakeries suck some are great. you need to try the different bakeries in an area! I'm mostly a steak and cheese man but sometimes will go for an exotic one. a hot tip just because I like your channel, pork and watercress pie in kawhia (can't remember the name, but there is only one bakery)
Maketu pies are often found in the Deli aisles of Countdown stores nationwide. If you're lucky, your local shop may have them in the hot aisle, aside from all the chicken.

My favorite lunch was that I would cut the top off one of Harry's Pies (incredible pastry), shove a handful of REAL cheese in it and put it back into the oven to heat up. (Microwaves don't do a pie justice)
One day, Harry came back because he had forgotten something, saw me doing it and asked me what I was doing...
First lesson for anyone coming to New Zealand and eating a pie. "Always blow on the pie" 🤣🤣🤣
Add Jo’s Pies in Brooklyn, Wellington to your list for the next one. Famously excellent! I don’t eat pastry anymore but these are tempting! 😍😍
Remember you promised none of them would go to waste, so you’ve gotta finish that lamb pie.
🤣🤢😵
I used to work at maketu pies. If you ever happen to come across a countdown then your definitely guaranteed to come across one of the maketu pies. Their best (in my opinion) is the smoked fish. Don't be shy to give it a try.
Haha the build ups to the lamb pie just to be let down, the reactions are gold😅
Best pie I ever had was from a bakery/cafe in Waiouru. Chicken and mushroom. Filling was shredded chicken in gravy, top wasn't pastry, it was a big portobello mushroom sprinkled with cheese then grilled yummy 😋
Not been up that way for many years so I don't know if the cafe is still there
You need to try a Jimmy's mice and cheese. Although they are only really available in the south
Mrs Macs - Big Mince, Chilli & Cheese YUMMY. Dad's Pies - Butter Chicken YUMMM!!!
Vegetarian pies are almost impossible to find. Very frustrating.
Jimmy's mince pies, from Roxburgh, Central Otago. Andersons mince and cheese pies, from Harwera,Taranaki. Sunny days mince pies, from Napier, Hawkes Bay.
There is a little bakery in Hawera that has an amazing roast lamb pie, it actually tastes like a roast lamb meal in a pie.
I sorta miss Hawera. Is Rough Habits still there? They did a nice steak meal
There is a bakery in Hamilton you have to reserve your pie a day or two in advance. These things are legendary.
Have you tried the famous "Ghost chips"? I hear they are out of this world.
Yeah Bakery pies are the way to go, go to one’s recommended in your area as well as sausage rolls. Irvines, Big bens are usually budget pies.
The pies can make you or break you... Will try No.8 soon. Thanks brother 😎
If your in wellington, patrisha’s pies in island bay and trisha’s in kilbernie are goth really good.
Irvines was an independent commercial baker, but then it was taken over by goodman fielder- an Aussie company, but now the whole shebang has its headquarters in Singapore- so sold off again.
you should look up 'always blow on the pie cop' classic pie advice from the NZ police
g.a.s petrol station in Waikanae usually has maketu pies if they are not sold out. it’s a bit far out but the train ride or drive along the coast is beautiful on a nice day.
Not sure if you can still get them but Ponsonby Pies smoked fish pies were amazing!
You need to try a jimmys pie
skip any pie in a plastic wrapper. gotta go to a real bakery. carefully eyeball the pastry. does it look too dry? usually the morning is a better time. some bakeries suck some are great. you need to try the different bakeries in an area! I'm mostly a steak and cheese man but sometimes will go for an exotic one. a hot tip just because I like your channel, pork and watercress pie in kawhia (can't remember the name, but there is only one bakery)
If I remember correctly they only sell maketu pies in and around close areas like Rotorua, Tauranga etc
Most Countdown stores have Maketu Pies, you'll find them in the chiller near the deli section. Not the main chiller section
For Bakery pies try the awesome range from Fairlie Bakehouse , Fairlie, Canterbury, South Island
"Always blow on the pie! " 😂😂
Maketu pies are often found in the Deli aisles of Countdown stores nationwide. If you're lucky, your local shop may have them in the hot aisle, aside from all the chicken.
Smoke Cafe near the coromandel turnoff does a lamb roast pie that's literally a roast dinner including potato, kumara and mint sauce.
