- Released in July 1972, this week’s “Remake of a Classic” was originally the B-side of The Spinners single, “How Could I Let You Get Away”. However, radio deejays begin flipping the record over and "I'll Be Around" became an unexpected hit, eventually spending five weeks at number one on the U.S. R&B chart and reaching number three on the U.S. Pop chart. It reached sales of over one million copies; The Spinners' first record ever to do so. The success of "I'll Be Around" would be the first in a series of hits the group would enjoy. Bobby Smith handled the lead vocal and Philippé Wynne, Pervis Jackson, Henry Fambrough and Billy Henderson, along with Linda Creed and the Sigma Sweethearts, took care of the backups. The song was co-written by Thom Bell and Phil Hurtt and produced by Bell.
The instrumentation was taken care of by MFSB, which stood for "Mother Father Sister Brother", a group of more than 30 studio musicians based at Philadelphia’s Sigma Sound Studios. In addition to The Spinners, MFSB can be heard on tunes by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, the O’Jays, the Stylistics, Wilson Pickett, and Billy Paul (among others). In reality MFSB was the east coast’s R&B version of California’s Wrecking Crew.
Covering this was pretty fun (though I admit I’m no Bobby Smith). It was also a bit challenging to decipher which instrument is doing what in the original, so there was a certain amount of guess work. I decided to not video me playing the bongo part…it’s the same thing over and over, so I didn’t see the point.
Before even listening new I'd luv this ❤
This is incredible! Truly enjoyed it!🎤🎸🎼🎹
I appreciate that; thanks a million!
On the waves waving and swaying on the huge sea called RUclips, my little channel boat is paddling towards my dream today. I am very lucky to have found your video while rowing a small paddle and going endlessly and endlessly. Your video shines the brightest on my RUclips window right now. Your video is the best video. I wish you could stay by my side forever. In the wide RUclips world like the Milky Way in the night sky, I happened to meet your video as beautiful as a star and enjoyed it as if I was dreaming. My heart seemed sad and shabby, but after watching your video, I became very happy. Thank you. .Please upload your wonderful videos often in the future. Even if the RUclips road is rough and the rain and wind blows and everything in this world moves away from me, I will always keep only your videos in my memory. It's like a premonition, so my heart melts. Even if the seasons pass and the years pass and the mountains and streams change, I think the RUclips world will never change and will last forever. Whether it was a coincidence or a coincidence based on an unknown mysterious algorithm, I opened my RUclips window and your thumbnail caught my eye. You have the ability to make your videos instantly stunning and attractive. Thank you to the algorithm that made it possible to watch good videos, I hope that you will succeed as you have worked hard for your dreams. Even if it's just a passing relationship that I've never seen offline and don't know the name of, I'm so happy to meet you through your video in the RUclips world.
Thanks so much for all the kind comments!
Gary Willoughby is my favorite of the identical Willoughby Nonuplets. It’s good to see him outta the hospital and back on vocals.
Are you sure you're not a changling the fairies were supposed to exchange in that hollow tree in the forest?
I’ve always loved this song and the oldies but goodies songs😁
Thank you sir !!! Beautifully done. Love this !
I appreciate that, Steve. Thanks so much!
That was great! I t always amazes me that you do all the instruments and vocals and then put them all together.
Many, many thanks!
You are so talented. All those instruments, and mixing them into the final arrangement. This was a soul classic from back in the day. And MFSB! I still listen to TSOP. Great job!
I appreciate the kind words...thanks so much!
Love the brass and orchestra parts too. The whole thing is incredible!!!!
Yes it is😁
As always, many thanks, Hub!
Thank you, William!
Indeed it is😍👍👍😍
YES!! Another Russ Willoughby cover for all of us to enjoy. So well done, as always. He's the GOAT with his covers. Love it!
As always, Abner, I really appreciate it...thanks so much!
What a lovely guitar! Great work again!
Thanks, Rolf....I really appreciate it. I do love that guitar (especially for the price!)
I'm sorry I didn't know you were in the hospital I hope you are doing much better I'm sad 😞😔😢 for you I will be praying for you may God bless you and keep you safe ❤💖🙏
Thanks so much, Tommy. Everything is fine!
👏 🤠
Another great cover!
Thanks so much!
Great cover Russ! You definitely nailed it... Fantastic!!
Thanks a ton!
Excellent cover Russ. Although your notes say there "was a certain amount of guess work" to "decipher which instrument is doing what in the original" - I would say you forensically analyzed things and delivered near perfection.
Although The Spinners continue, after the sad passing of Bobby Smith in 2013, and the only original being Henry Fambrough, their performances are nothing quite like they were.
So, this Russ cover does resonate with what The Spinners were. Well done!
Thanks for that! It's sad that so many of these great artists from that era have gone to the wayside. I usually have issues with bands who use a famous name when there's only one or two original members (FOREIGNER comes to mind), but in the case of The Spinners, there's only one left, so that's forgivable.
Another great job Russ! Thank you for sharing!
You bet....thanks so much!
Very nice … great song !
Thanks, Greg!
Great song Russ! Nice throw back.
Glad you liked it, Cindy...many thanks!
There's room for a little Bongo Russ in the upper right corner 😬Fantastic Russ, great cover!!
That's one more guy I'd have to pay...forget it. Thanks, Kurt!
Myriad of genres! Excellently played. Thank you!
Thanks so much, Tony!!!
great stuff
Thank you!
Another awesome one Russ, really loved it! Lots of keyboards in this one to keep you on your toes! :) One of the first 45's I ever bought was TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) by MFSB
Thanks, Ian. Yeah, the keys were a bit daunting!
This has become my favorite cover of this song.
Glad to hear it....thanks!
HuH!!!
I must've misread the title, I thought it was I Get Around from the BB's...
That being said, you absolutely nailed this song. Thanks for sharing with us...
You're welcome, Larry! Thanks so much! A friend is the keyboardist for Brian Wilson....if I covered a BB tune I'm afraid I might end up with my tail between my legs!
Good job
Thanks!!
Great version!
Many thanks~!
Another great job Russ! Your voice is made for this one, the lead vocal and harmonies were perfect. I forgot all about this one, loved it, you sure can pick great tunes.
So glad you liked it....fun tune, for sure! As always, many thanks!

Thank you very much!

Hi Andy, good to hear from you. The Left Banke is on my list! Thanks so much!
Smooooooooooth
thanks!
Glad I stumbled upon this channel today, plenty of songs from the era I like to listen to. Great cover too by the way, The Spinners deserve more recognition than they get IMO.
Awesome! Thank you!
The Spinners have finally been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame !
WoW! Amazing, so well done. Once again, you've knocked it out of the park Russ. Keep them coming.
As always, many thanks...glad you liked it!

Great stuff, cool to have this type of talent.
Thank you!
Another "Time Machine" Russ ! You took me back 50 years to a Junior College in rural Mississippi. Whenever this song came on back then, I couldn't keep myself from dancing. It still makes me want to dance all over the room! Thanks for sharing your "gift" with us.
Thank you, Steve; I really appreciate all the kind words!
Wow! Absolutely impressive!
Keep ‘em coming
Thank you, dear....I appreciate it!
Damn. That was g-o-o-o-d !!!
Many thanks!
Covering a Thom Bell production all by yourself is a major challenge - but you pulled it off with excellence!
Thanks so much, Tim...I appreciate it!
wow excellent🎉
LOVE your videos!
Good job Russ! I appreciate your talent!

Keep doing it brother! Love this!

This is awesome. If you are this good at snycing sounds and visuals...you should be an ASMR artist.
Just got a tingling feeling all over,.....so I guess I am! Thanks so much!
I LOVE it!! Thank you! 🤗
Russ this is amazing!!! This is such a great song and you absolutely nailed it!! Vocals are perfect!! Love the guitars in this. For some reason this song reminds me of summer. Do u have any originals recorded that we can buy?
Hi Chris! As always, many thanks! As for originals, I do have two CDs of original guitar music out there. Just google my name and "Riveting" and "Beyond the Velvet Rope" and you'll find them.
@@russwilloughby501 awesome russ. Will definitely do that!!
@@russwilloughby501 Wow, now I have joined the dots. I remember hearing a tune from a friend about 5 years back that really stood out. I just called him about it - it is Gestapo Groove and it's you. It's a master-piece. Wow, I have come full circle.
@@atlarge988 i have been listeing to some of russ stuff he mentioned above... and u are so right!! Its fantastic!! Sounds like Satriani .. Buckethead.. The Dregs and David Gilmore all rolled into one! Great stuff!
@@atlarge988 What a coincidence! Thanks so much....really glad to hear you like the tune!
Bravo!! Bravo!!!👏👏👏
This is probably one of my top 5 favorite songs since I was 12 years old in 1972, I know the song backwards and I can say this is indeed one of the very best covers to that classic. Great work guys!
Wow, thanks so much!
Loved it my kind of song just what we need in times like this 🤗🌷
Thanks a ton; glad you liked it!
Love it.
Beautiful cover song Russ... brings back great memories.
Thank you, Markus!
Your a hero my friend - you give hope to all of us guitar players in the back seat that suffer from I need to make the time to practice - your covers are some of my all time favorite songs - what a superb job on all the parts from vocals - to guitar - to keyboard - bass - and drums - got it all covered - don't stop giving us the great songs
Thanks so much, Chris!
A great song and fantastic, multi-instrumental performance!
That's very kind...thank you!
Russ and his amazing ability to take us on a journey through time! I just love your mixes. Everything in it's place... everything in balance. Warm and inviting. It is like having all of you in the living room. Thank you so much! (P.S.... I was one of those deejays Spin'n the hits on the mighty 1290 ;-)
Thanks a lot, Jack; I really appreciate it!
And once again, Russ not only shows incredible range in crossing genres with this great cover of a soulfull masterpiece but incorporates all instrumental parts with even the signature bass leading. Bravo as always Sir.
Thank you so much; I really appreciate the kind words!
Nice job as always Russ.
That R&B hit is timeless. I'm just sad you didn't do any of the Spinners' choreography on this one. 🙃
I thought about it...but my leisure suit is at the cleaners. Thanks so much, Stan!
@@russwilloughby501 Hey BTW ... Just went out on a limb and ordered (reserved) an SG from Artist Guitar US. Hard to get them in US. Check out the specs for $200 (includes shipping). Crazy price and usually good reviews. Big in Austrailia.
@@frankfarklesberry Looks like I might have to order their version of the Tele Thinline. The specs for all of their guitars is pretty impressive. Bone nut, split coils and locking tuners are pretty much unheard of in this price range.
@@russwilloughby501 Yeah, i know. And it's common in AUS. They were having shipping cost problems here, which made their US presence lame.
You guys are amazing. I've loved this song since 1973, and you guys made it your own.
We thank you!
YOU ARE AWESOME..... NOW HOW ABOUT SOME DOOBIE BROS AND CCR
Thanks, Poppy! I thought about doing both, so you never know!
Another stellar cover...on so many levels!
As always, many thanks Mark!
Great stuff, Russ! Always a treat to see you've uploaded a new one! This has always been one of my fave sing-alongs...
Glad to hear it...as usual, many thanks!
That was awesome. So talented. Can I ask what editing software you used?
Thanks much. I record the audio tracks onto a Yamaha AW1600, I use my phone to record each video, then I put it all together in Movavi.
Hey Russ, nice version.........There is an Aussie Classic here called Wings of an Eagle by Russell Morris that you may enjoy trying......it was a hit in 1972.........sure if you typed it in here you'll find it.....hope this finds you well mate...cheers Rod
I will check it out...thanks so much!
I'd like to see you do count down by Mr Buckingham in my mind the best guitarist in the world and always will be. No offense I watch you all the time
Glad you like the videos...thanks so much!
I gotta ask, what track do you lay down first?
It depends on how the song starts..usually it's a guitar part.
Why is there only a thumbs down button?
The late Doug Parkinson would be proud, well down!
Thanks so much, Rob!
I’d like to buy you a Guinness Russ. Enjoy all your videos
And I'd take you up on that...thanks!
You should have bowed out gracefully before covering this song.
Luckily for me I couldn't give a flying fuck what you think I should or shouldn't do.
