RuPauls Drag Race UK Season 2 Is Amazing | RPDR UK Season 2 Video Essay

- In this video essay, I'm dissecting all the reasons why I think that RuPaul's Drag Race UK Season 2 is one of the best drag race seasons ever. Drag Race UK Season 2 introduced us to some amazing UK queens such as my personal favorites: Tia Kofi, A'Whora, Tayce, Lawrence Chaney, and of course Bimini Bon Boulash, who gave us some of the best entertainment in recent years and showed us how Drag Race doesn't have to be overly produced in order to be amazing!
I'm also talking about a couple of issues that I had with the judging in this season in the video essay and how RuPaul and Michelle Visage were biased towards some competitors in UK Season 2.
There are some spoilers ahead, so go watch Drag Race UK S2 before clicking on the video. - Развлечения
Who are you rooting for in the finale?
Bimini Bon Gulaš!!!
@@novosloven Sve vreme to sebi ponavljam. Thank God, I'm not the only one. 😂
Bimini babes!!!!
Tayce! I really think she didn't deserve at least two of her bottom placements 😐 she's stunning, she's been vulnerable on the show and she's also super funny! But i won't complain if Bimini or Lawrence win
Lawrence
It is crazy to me that Ellie literally ended up homeless during the 7 month "break". And she still managed to look and be amazing when she got back.

Another thing that rub me the wrong way was Rupaul trying to change Ginny style
This!!! We missed out on at least two Ginny looks because of that judging panel and I'm pissed about it. We saw what she did with the revel dress, she surely had more super fun stuff like that to show but no. They make her construct something the day of the runway, instead of using what she brought.
@@pookabunny2051 wait what? Which looks did they make her redo and where did you hear this? I found her reveal stunt hilarious! I can’t believe the judges didn’t like it. I’m glad she bit back.
@@SpandexSuperstarr i guess when they had to make their looks and ru was telling them to look sexy (which is so incredibly far from ginny's drag style)
I am wearing an ADEQUATE dress made of MATERIALS that is ON MY BODY.
And the Oscar for Funniest Confessional goes tooooooo.... Tia Coffee!!!
Not something la la ri can say about her bags look 🤣
Vintage? No
Elegant? No

I’m from the UK - I feel S2 of RPDRUK gave us the “golden age” of RPDRUS 1-6. The queens aren’t walking in trying to edit and brand themselves, their relaxed and have fun with it. Nowadays, the US version are too worried on being “perfect” and “produce” the way they are. Brava to the UK S2 Queens.
The queens wouldn’t have to produce themselves and be perfect if the fandom learned to just enjoy a show and hate on people for how they were portrayed on a very edited reality tv show
@@mariopork4945 Oh 100%, but also the producers of the US version H E A V I L Y edit the show to create narratives and storylines. The UK legally are not allow to edit something that did not happen. So I think that has a hand in it but you are right - the toxic part of the fandom needs to sit back and enjoy it for what it is.
@@romanvgotti1340 wait is that actually a law that they’re not allowed to edit like that in the UK ?
@@mariopork4945 I’m pretty sure of it.
@@romanvgotti1340 i had no idea about this, I feel like that should be a thing for American TV too but then again this is America
In the UK apparently it is NOT allowed for them to edit anything that didn’t actually happen!!! That’s why there is such a stark difference!
The BBC normally loves a good edit.
It’s not that it’s not allowed, the tv shows here are definitely produced to a degree still but no where near as obviously done as US shows
I’m pretty sure they edited drama out tbh. Like when ginny left for example
the bbc are a different level of television especially BBC Three, they want to show things in a good light when it comes to groups that arent presented in the media
They are allowed they just don’t do it because it’s tacky, thats why Big Brother in the UK was always the best in the world too
Knowing Ginny Lemon walked out I loved how they still gave her that emotional storyline with Bimini. They didn’t slander her at all even when she walked out her interviews were still sweet. They didn’t edit to make her the villain as a repercussion!
I enjoyed a lot of things in this season, it was so unpredictable :
- Joe Black eliminate first
- Astina with one win going third
- Ginny Lemon bendelacremed herself
- Coronavirus
- Veronica Green with one win can't come back
- They need a queen to replace Veronica, but...Ginny eliminate herself, so she is cancel to come back
- Joe Black came back and is elimnate with the H&M moment
- AWhora eliminated with 2 wins
- Bimini slaying the second part of the show because of the lockdown
- Tayce winning 4 lipsync
- a top 4
Tayce was top 3!

she’ll slay on all stars
She needs to go on Dragula
She would slay on Dragula
I agree UK Season 2 is so much more enjoyable then Kandys season 13 of Drag Race... 😎 I hope producers are take notes 📝
They definitely should. I love the more laid back style of production, I hope that they try to utilize that in the next season.
I don't know why the producers favored big load queens assuming that they can fan favorite like duh really?

Season 6 US, AS2 US and Season 2 UK are the best Drag Race seasons.
AGREED. I would throw seasons 4 & 5 into that list too. Regardless, DRUK season 2 is the best season in recent memory.
Nah season 2-6 were everything. I enjoyed bobs and monets seasons too
8 and 12 are honourable mentions
I was just thinking about this today and those were the top three seasons I also picked
@@yara1896 a lot of people thought season 8 was boring. And season 12 is overrated, it just shines because all seasons in the VH1 era were bad.

@@PopDropChannel And I want Joe Black to model it 🤣
@@asdfghjklasdfghjkl321 I've heard that Joe is collabing with them, so you never know.
You better glitter the fuck out of it
I recently saw a review where they state that queens who go on drag race spend 20-30K on outfits 😱... H&M is irresponsable fashion.., but BRING ON some budget looks!
I felt a turning point at the first design challenge when Ru kept Tia over Asttina. I was only comparing to UK season 1 and not US seasons, and Asttina was a similar archetype to the Vivienne: won the first challenge and is confident. Then, they eliminated her and kept the one with the same archetype as Vinegar Strokes. This is when I felt like production said fuck the archetypes, the better competitor wins.
The only problem with the season was (1) covid robbing Veronica of a verse in UK Hun when she was a frontrunner and (2) that homophobic audio mixing in the final challenge.
What do you mean by homophobic audio mixing??
As a Brit I’m so glad how well received uk drag race has been with US fans. I wonder if the difference is down to a lack of prize dollars, makes for less cut throat behaviour. Also a life changing amount of money may make you less inclined to be your true self and be whatever gets the cash.
I studied psychology and remember a study, where kids without a prize in sight actually made better work painting, more detailed and having fun than kids that were promised a prize for a drawing. Just saying ... maybe the prize is part of the unnatural feeling the US seasons have lately.
@@iialarcon30 yeah, I think the way past queens have been bullied and piled on in past seasons hasn’t helped. They exaggerate (both the contestant and the edit) exaggerate their behaviours to make good tv for us then get pilloried for it.
The best part of this season is that I felt like I was watching more of a competition than a reality tv show, like the wins made sense and so did the eliminations
And Tayce is really one the MOST beautiful mugs I’ve ever seen in my life
I really misjudged this season back when it first started. I thought that it would have been overshadowed by s13 and that the lockdown break of the season would make the season flop. I'm so happy that I was wrong cause this season is so good! For me its up there with As2 and s6.
Definitely one of the best!!!
I've been WAITING for someone to talk about this legendary season. THANK YOU!! 🥰
I needed to talk to someone about this season, it's already one of my all-time faves.
10:39
Thank you for speaking out on this! RuPaul and Michelle are getting out of touch with regular folks of the world, they became rich LA gays (yes, including Michelle) with no regards to others. Same thing with Ellen DeGeneres and her woe-is-me video from a few million worth mansion living room. They forgot how it feels to have no money and having to work hard to have your food on the table, let alone buy expensive gowns in the time of not being able to even go outside. Of course, RuPaul would have it delivered by mail and pay hefty for it if she needed something. Some humility and understanding of other 90% percent of non-rich people wouldn't do them any harm. They're selling the show to the regular viewer, not the elite.. I mean, if they're smart...? Seriously.
You earned my respect. Subbed, liked and will keep on tuning in.
But I will, however, disagree with you on one point. You didn't understand when RuPaul said: "I don't want to see no goddamn H&M anymore!". It would be incredibly easy to (and it is) to pin this outburst to the "oh, RuPaul doesn't understand what it means to be poor" moment, but if you think Chichi DeVayne's critiques where she keeps blaming money for the lack of work on the outift, you'll soon get what I'm saying.
Many people misconstrue this, it seems. He was saying that he doesn't want to see _off the rack_ outfits, but embellished, dazzling creations where you've put your heart in to make it your own. He doesn't want to see lazy Amazon outfits, but sparkling designs that are cropped, twisted and changed to fit the person that would be wearing them.
RuPaul wants to see adjusted, well fitted creations that represent YOU, not a lazy "I had this outfit, so..." moments. That's all there is to it. He was annoyed by that fact and that fact only, I felt.
You don't have to go outside to work on your outfits and it's not expensive to edit them. Last time I heard, pack of 5000 rhinestone were going for about 12 pounds (like 20 dollars) on Amazon. That was Joe's job, not Ru's.
This season has the possitive that the first us seasons had that the queens were more free and the possitive from the later seasons that the fashion and talent of the queens are more elevated.
Also, the lip syncs were so good this season, and they chose great songs
too way better than season 13, the level, culture, and personalities
Drag is Unity and this season showed us what being yourself means, they embodues the essence of drag and showed Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent.
This has been one of my favorite seasons ever. Every cast member was so unbelievably talented and it felt real. Everyone brought a different skill set- lawrences comedy, awhoras fashion, joes cabaret, veronicas singing- like there was just so much. even through some of the judging was definitely interesting the season itself was near perfect
I can literally watch this season over and over again. It was soooo good
Agreed! As a Scot, was amazing to have Scottish queens and Scottish humour. I'd say this season is up there with all stars season 2.
I completely agree with what your saying about how Ru was unreasonable about demanding more expensive drag when literally no one has any money BUT Ru and Michelle. Not everyone has fracking money, you know? Also this was only Uk second season. No one on season 2 US had super crazy expensive stuff the whole time either so I'm baffled.
Additionally, these queens do not get paid anything from the show AND they cant sell their own merch the way the US girls can. Ginny said the goats in the promo vid were paid more than the girls.
They were supposed to get a world tour after the show as incentive but because of "Rona now its only the top 4. Ginny said she's spent all her savings but now cant recoup any of it like they were told they would be able to.
I cannot say this enough: Drag Race UK Season 2 is one of the best seasons in the drag race universe EVER. 👏🏻
It might just be the smaller cast but I also feel like I got to know and really remember every queen from uk. I've already forgotten some of the season 13 queens and that season isn't even finished yert.
season 13 is sooo predictable like, you can tell who will make it to the top four, which sucks because it puts other queens at a disadvantage lol
SPOILER:
For real, like you can tell that Utica and Olivia are probably next to go. Utica 100% because her track record and Olivia most likely because Olivia has been going downhill recently in the competition. I have nothing against the queens at all and I love them, but it's the favoritism of certain queens like Gottmik and Kandy that don't make the season for me. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, just look at Kandy's Beast couture runway because if any other queen wore that to the runway they would have been **torn to shreds**)
Yeah the sheltering of Gottmik is insane
We all know Symone is going to win.
@@imissedthejokeonpurpose6182 That look was awful.
@@Paulxl Symone is my fave but she really is flatlining these days. Mik are her up twice, in Snatch Game and in the Roast. Can't see Rosé and Kandy as true competition for her tho
I loved what you pointed out about judging! I seriously adore this season and it's cast, and honestly as was really pissed to see judges coming into and enoying diverse UK drag scene (capitalizing on it too!) but simultaneously trying to make it more like us style of drag and undermine UK queen's uniqueness. Ugh!
I agree that it was bad how Ru and Michelle didnt have understanding that well its pandemic and queens who arent already giant names with secured money to get new stuff so everybody needed to do their thing to get new stuff. But yes cant wait for Joe Black h and m collab
like I loved the season until the very moment Awhora got eliminated??? that whole episode felt like a total rig against her and up in Lawrence's and Ellie's ass. went a little downhill after that, especially the finale with the fucked main challenge edit. still a very very good season tho.
I agree! I wonder ... Perhaps the queens earning a second badge should get immunity that they can use once? Or maybe once it's close to the end, the queens with least badges should be in the bottom automatically?
Yes! Totally agree that awhora’s eviction was the turning point to where the season lost its spark. Her blue Sista Sista revenge look with the shoulder puff was one of the most ICONIC drag race moments ever. Without her the finale was underwhelming. However, up until then the season was incredible and absolutely one of the best so can’t complain!
season 12 aside, i've found it a bit hard to Truly enjoy recent seasons rpdrus. i really hope the us production team is taking notes bc the uk is killing it (aside from some dodgy judging). thank for making this video as i needed something to reflect on now that this season has ended :D
Ru Paul’s little fanny wobble over an H&M dress did produce on of the most iconic moments in RPDR herstory tho 💀
I'm obsessed with Bimini. Can't get over how talented she is!
I’m glad Lawrence won but Bimini had me there for a minute but in that lip sync you saw Lawrence’s thirst and right for that crown !
What robbed me the wrong way was the stand up challenge. Who decided to make an audience out of blow up dolls and a mannequin as a judge this episode? That was a missed opportunity to do what Ellen DeGeneres is doing on her show: A live video audience, e.g. of previous Drag Race contestants such as Trixie and Katya. They even have a format called "Queens who like to watch" or invite Bob, Yuhua, Nina Bo'Nina Brown, Miz Cracker, Raja and Raven, and Monét who all do a review of the show anyway.
That is a fantastic idea. I would love to see an improved version of that challenge. The one in S6 worked really well because of the live audience, while the one in UK S2 was lackluster not only because of the COVID restrictions but because the judging was weird during that challenge. I found A'Whoras stand-up very entertaining and couldn't understand why the judges hated it so much.
Miss Rona budget?
Spoilers, people would know who would be still in the competition
@@page394potter8: Drag Race queens have a non-disclosure contract so if they put them in the video audience just like they did in other seasons like Season 7's despy awards, then it could have been much more entertaining.
rpdr uk season 2 is better than the US version because they don't take themselves too seriously, I think it's a cultural difference at the end of the day, editing aside.
Definitely. Brits do have a more laid back attitude to everything, even when they are in a competition and that's what made them all so loveable in the end.
I feel like Ru should have put his money where his mouth was and given the queens a stipend to buy costuming to supplement their wardrobes or given them more design challenges in the second part of the season to say "ok, you girls don't have the money for fashion - here's a bunch of fabric, make some costumes for your next challenge"
This season was SO GOOD because of the cast!
Let’s be real, nobody watches Drag Race to see Rupaul... he is just the name attached to the show!
Yeah, the name, the brand, the person who created it and has built it up to what it is now. I appreciate there's plenty of nobodies who find joy in putting down others and others' achievements, but do have some respect or do yourself a favour and go learn what that is.
In fact hes usually one of the biggest downsides
Its the cast that really makes a season
@@chargestone96 In fact, he can't be a 'downside' given he is the show. It's bloody his show, numbskull. As for the cast making it - it's a reality show with contenstants, so the focus is on them. Where do they make the likes of you this thick?
Wrong, Ru makes the show, I have always watched because of him. I love the cast, but also love Ru. Watch Canada Drag Race to see how the show is without him, not as good. Really get sick of the Ru bashing honestly!
@@sw_fit50s i was pissed that we didn’t have Ru for an épisode in Canada... i liked that it was a 3 person vote instead of favoritism but still, I felt it was a « cheap » version of the rest of the franchise...
totally agreed! also, the rpdr uk s2 confessional looks are better than some looks from the mainstage of rpdr us... not a joke, just a fact!
This season was so good!
Crazy how Astina Mandela won the first episode and went home the second, and Bimini lip synced the first episode and was the fan favourite to win!
I've had a hard time (ever since first watching drag race) remembering drag queen's names! And by gosh this is the only season I remember everyone! If that ain't enough proof that the cast was great I don't know what is😂
First time I've ever watched Ruepauls dragrace and I'm so glad I did watching Lawrence Chaney bring the crown home to Scotland. A well deserved winner congratulations Lawrence,, never change you have a fabulous personality.
I agree with everything said on this video. This season of UK is probably the best that I've seen and definetly my favorite, including the USA seasons. It entertained the hell out of me.
The lockdown wasn’t 7 months long. But there were restrictions this whole time.
I just finished the season and I thought the same thing, this was one of the best seasons.
Ive live for a couple years in east london and let me tell you, those queens are there to entertain! While we have queens that are worried about looking beautiful, we had pure entertainment even with the gorgeous queens! Thats what I like about the drag scene in east london and thats why I loved Bimini so kuch, she was exactly what I experienced there. Talented, kind, beautiful and entertaining.
Thank you, i got tired of s13 so quick, but could always find myself watching rpdr uk clips for foreverr
Season 6 was very over edited as well. Season 2 and 5 was the best the US has had. Season 2 specifically is HIGHLY under rated from the challenges, lip syncs, and untucked
I agree. My favourite Drag Race seasons were the earliest ones from 1-6. Each one was incredible because it was organic and just finding its feet. It wasn't over produced, over polished and over rated.
The disaster for me began with All Stars 1 and Season 7.
This series of Drag Race UK was so much more incredible than most other seasons of Drag Race, including DRUK 1. The mix of queens was great and the production was so much more organic.
I almost forgot this was a regular season. This was an ALL-STAR level of a season
To answer the question in the thumbnail: Bimini is on this season, so very possibly so.
Damn this is in top 3 best seasons ever 😍
It's a great top 3.
Absolutely loved this season. It got me through part of lockdown and it made me fall inlove with dragrace again for the reasons that I fell for the earlier seasons. Everything about it is like solid gold.
Cmon ms mojo
I'm coming for you MsMojo like Tamisha Iman.
RPDR UK season 2 largely felt like it was anyone’s game. For US seasons it’s the producers game.
Love this summary of an absolutely brilliant season (top 3 all time I reckon). I also really appreciate pointing out that we have been in actual lockdown for 9 of the past 12 months so the financial and mental toll that has taken on the queens, the industry, and our entire economy cannot be understated...and we still aren't allowed back at work. This season was iconic bc of the queens (yas Lawrence!!) but also bc it got us through perhaps the toughest of our dark/cold/wet lockdown months. Amazing.
Hated Rupaul for bullying Joe Black, Tia Kofi and Ginny Lemon
The thing about “a lack of money = a bad queen” is something that annoys me so much! Half of the past winners wouldn’t be able to gain a place in current drag race with their past looks and if that was the case we’d miss out on so many creative and interesting queens. It’s like Elektra in Drag race down under - she’s talked about how she lost everything not to long ago and therefore can’t afford the same things as other queens and yet her runways get torn apart for being to “basic” - it’s really such a shame. Drag isn’t about having everything be custom made for you.
Subscribed. Excellent narration on a fantastic season.
Absolutely iconic and stunning cast, each and every one of them deserve the world
I binge watched season 2 of dr uk as well bc my friend told me it's one of the best seasons ever. And he was right! Im just sad that I wasnt able to watch during the time it aired. Very unpredictable. All casts are memorable. Amazing storylines! If you asked me, they deserved cash prizes for challenges just for the show they put on
11:20 and we're still in lockdown in uk, we went back to it at christmas :(
I couldn't agree more with your opinion on this UK2 season, including judges. This vid made me so happy😀 i love this season and girls. Also congrats Lawrence💜

So right I really am enjoying this video over the years the past few seasons of us drag race and all stars have not been as great as before 🤪😊😁😃🧐🤔😄
I absolutely agree with you. I think that the producers made the recent seasons too artificial and we as an audience can pick that up immediately.
Wow you did great on this

The season was going to be perfect but Ru had to fuck it up by eliminating Joe first for no reason, keeping Ellie Diamonds, and eliminating Astinna for no reason aswell. Thank god we had the united king dolls who made it amazing
Us Brits (or the BBC) don't seem to go for the over dramatisation/ over produced nature of a lot reality TV shows. I mean...we love Bake Off. 🤣
I've been cringing so hard at Season 13 of US Drag Race in places and it just made me realise how amazing UK Season 2 has been!
Seasons divisible by 2 are just so good in general! RPDR 2,4,6,8 (not 10 sorry) & 12/ UK 2 and Thailand 2 & ALLSTARS 2 especially
I had never watched RuPaul' s drag race ever ever before . I locked in on this so quickly . Like a twisted humming bird . Amazing ! I loved this . Yes . A genuine personality was the key here . Well , you know . Britain is punk . And that's why I loved this . Laissez faire. Indeed . Super cool . Brilliant. Let it continue this way . Wow !! British punk . Bimini ...Amazing. They were all bloody good. UK HUN . Stop it . Ear worm . Anti depressant!?😘🤩🤩
it’s not allowed for the uk media to edit anything unless the person involved makes a claim for defamation, or there is massive public outrage.
i think that’s why drag race uk does so well because you connect with the queens more although it’s reality tv which has a bad rep
The uk has loads of queens: campy queens, musical theatre queens, comedy queens, look queens and Ginny lemon 😂😂
I agree with everything here. UK is much more authentic and real. Every contestant is a star and so funny too. Loved it 💝💝💝💎 it's up there with US season 6
Absolutely agree. I wish it was as long as season 13 seems to be 😅
AS2, US 5&6 are my favourites. This season definitely gets up there in the mix as one of the best.
Great video!
Thank you. 💕
I was thinking to myself how it was better than US season 13..and probably one of the best, if not the best, season I've watched. Those queens were amazing!
i agree with everything! (especially the unfair judging). The last episode was so bittersweet to me because i didn’t want to let them go. I love this cast and season so much.
Yes. It's my favorite. So much heart and soul.
Aww yeah. Personally, this was the most iconic season for me
What if Challenge #1 on Episode 1 was extended to episode #2, you had to create a look, write a verse, and perform choreo to it. 2 episodes bc making outfit + creating verse/dance, also first episode so no one goes home, it would show different queens strengths and idk would be very interesting. I think a good 1st challenge, if they flop at this they'll clearly flop at rest of the season vs a non-dancing queen getting a dance challenge 1st episode and losing.
One of the best seasons! Top 5 seasons for me with Seasons 5, 6, 9 and All Stars 2.
Rest in peace Cherry Valentine 🍒
big love to UKs1 too
I need to hear you say 'Welcome to Miss Mojo'
I might include it in one of my future videos. 😁
The irony is I enjoyed the season just by watching clips. I actually watched the whole thing and I was shook
what bothered me as well was uk drag isn't like us drag - a lot of british queens are harder to define than american queens. us drag has mostly been refined under the drag race lens - many queens start drag with the intent of getting on drag race - which is less the intent in the uk and so queens here are less shaped that. but it bothers me that ru is trying to make uk drag like us drag
I have to agree, I don't think RP really got some of the UK drag. UK drag is a bit more cabaret and ready for live shows, whereas US drag is heavily influenced by the pageant drag which we don't really have in UK. Pageant Queens = Realness and also $$$$ expensive to do!
I love the screenshots of rupaul during this whole video xD
I think when we are talking about seasons not being produced I think we need to address the hateful part of “fans” who are literally sending death threats and of course queens will be scared for themselves and will start to produce themselves to avoid this shit. For example Kandy who’s giving don’t give a shit attitude and living her tv reality show fantasy and making the season dynamic receiving (including her mom tf???) tons of shit right now. So maybe we will start address the hatred and not only blaming producers for the boring seasons?
