snatch game… the performances aren’t supposed to be the person, it’s supposed to be an interpretation of a person. wanting her to “represent” someone in an honest fashion isn’t funny, isn’t what the game is designed for. would you say the same about Simone’s Harriet Tubman? Or Rose’s Mary Queen of Scots? they both took a lot of liberties with their choices.
i’m sure Jelena is great. but like you said. no one there could point serbia out on a map. but they know Russia. easier and funnier.
Those are all really known people tho and Jelena is not famous worldwide. It kinda comes off as just mocking. 🤷

I think what she meant in the video is that Plane's impression was only considered as good because no one knew who Jelena was. Yes, Snatch Game is about interpreting a character in a way that makes people laugh, but funny or not you're still supposed to incorporate enough elements of the character for people to understand who you're interpreting. And here "enough" depends on the context and who's watching. For us who didn't know who she was, that "slavic bimbo" character was enough. But for her, who knows the character, it wasn't. It's like if they had a Drag Race China and someone there decided to do a Katy Perry impression, and then they just wear a black wig with bangs and answers everything with "burguers", "fries" and "pizza" bc she's an American singer. It could be funny, they could even win the challenge, but for us who know the character it would be a terrible impression nonetheless

i do agree with you that the snatch game was mid however if we had to pick a winner it would have to be Plane also these personas are supposed to be dragged up.
I am not sure if I have the same understanding of how humor generally works in snatch game. It is a lot of low hanging fruit, a lot of "reading" and "shade", a lot of stereotyping and such. It is typically very dumb humor. You might not have been offended by it before, because you were not on the end of it. Now I don't mind to have a conversation generally about humor and jokes in trash TV. But if you have ever watched any sketch of Bianca Del Rio for example, you realize being offensive to some extend is a part of their kind of humor. So What I'm getting at is, This particular snatch game was not out of the tradition of snatch game type of humor. But I do agree that the entire episode was meh. But Plane did the best, even if it didn't include the smartest jokes.

I also think it's good for Jelena that she got some spotlight in an American/International platform, even if the representation she got wasn't necessarily a super accurate portrayal. She definitely got a boost of attention which will be good for her financially. I certainly didn't know of her existence prior to the episode and I now find myself streaming some of her music

I have yet to watch the rest of the video, however it is definitely weird to me how you praised Katya's Bjork Snatch Game when she is an American person playing a russian hooker persona , and she spoke in an inaccurate accent while impersonating an Icelandic singer. I love Katya and her performance but she was literally talking about eating cards, small intestines, testicles and pastrami, like....hello? Also I just think Snatch Game is cheap humor and low-hanging-fruit type of jokes so I understand the Americanization of Jelena in order to appeal to the judges.

Nah I just think it’s a different type of being funny, it’s a bit more dry and it’s relying on Slavic stereotypes that unfortunately are funny to Americans, but personally I found her performance funny on the first watch and then on the rewatch I liked it even more

How is it an issue that people don't know the reference? The character is actually better, because you can make stuff up and make it your own since nobody knows who they are exactly. You leave yourself much less open to criticism of "the voice wasn't right, that's not the line, that's not how she speaks" etc , also the snatch game is going for hours and hours they do rounds of questions .
As to her not being funny enough for you. Sure you can have that opinion but overall they group was extremely unfunny as a whole. Who do you think should have won?
