In the last scene in the hospital you can see that the frog is shinning because of the bell, so they did were in The Unknown, which is a kind of in-between life and death. There are lots of hidden clues about this, like in the cemetery Greg and Wirt are close to the tomb of "Quincy Endicott". And well, the music is fantastic. In the scene where Greg is becoming an edelwood tree you can listen a version of "Potatoes and Molasses"... in latin! Steph, I hope you really like this show! Thanks for this reaction!
The Unknown is actually the Afterlife, they almost died in the river and had to find their way back to the land of the living. This is actually pretty dark for a kid's show 😂😂😂
It’s purgatory!! Purgatory is where you go, when freshly dead, and they don’t know if your going to heaven or hell. When making the show it was going to be called the in between, and the devil would greet them, but they thought it would be to dark. And in the original they got hit by a train and died at the start.
@@user-yw8tg8hw7j That's actually not 100% correct. Everyone in the Purgatory will go to heaven when they are cleaned from their sins. Sorry for my bad english.
Over the Garden Wall is simply a journey into the unknown. On the grander scale, the narrative is an allegory or more accurately a modern (and more child friendly) retelling of Dante's Inferno. Wherein Wirt and Greg, like Dante go deeper and deeper into the unknown that is the underworld/limbo/purgatory/hell. It definitely warrants an explainer video and there are quality video essay dissections of the show. But at the end of the day Over the Garden Wall also works as a simple story of lost brothers in the woods. The disorienting and jarring start kinda helps you feel how they feel---lost. But there's good music and fantastic visuals so it's kinda nice to be lost with them.
If I remember correctly I've heard that this is a loose retelling of dante's inferno and each episode is worth and Greg traversing a different level of the afterlife with the people they meet being sould that reside there And in the end they reject giving into death and wake up in the lake
@@artloveranimation not that word of god is a substitute for canon, but there’s a RUclipsr who did a video essay on this “theory” and tweeted the creator who either liked or replied in a very wink wink nudge nudge way And I mean it’s so fucking obvious there’s really no point arguing or saying it’s “just” anything, in addition to there being no real way to say it textually without completely piercing the style of the show

I did not expect you to react this but i like it. if ur interested the show infinity train is really amazing and the level of how good this is as over the garden wall. I highly recommend it. :)
After rewatching it so many times I noticed in the beginning the walking through the woods then it feels like Wirt kind of comes to a realization that their walking through the woods. And he's confused like "why are we walking through the woods?"
You shouldn't try to make sense of this show from the get-go, you should just take it for what it is (cute and cozy and creepy) and let the clues come to you. There are also loads of easter eggs for all the characters and for other stuff throughout the episodes that are fun to look up and notice when you watch it, like how Endicott's name is on one of the gravestones when they are running from that police officer in ep 9, and the girl looking out the window in the intro is human-Beatrice and the house she used to live in (where she sits) is the house in the first ep
I have an OTGW tattoo of the casette, I love this show so sooo much. Also, you'll see SO MANY new things after watching this for a second time. It has so many easter eggs and little things
The whole of life is just like watching a film. Only it’s as though you always get in ten minutes after the big picture has started, and no-one will tell you the plot, so you have to work it out all yourself from the clues. ― Terry Pratchett
When has any cartoon ever made sense? Also did you notice the frog at the end in the hospital room when Greg is swinging it? The bell that the frog swallowed is still glowing in it’s belly.
I don't think the unknown is really a defined place. It isn't Wirt's imagination. It isn't a dream. It isn't the afterlife. It's unknown. It's a kind of realm of cultural artifacts and forgotten history and folklore. It is both a physical manifestation of the kind of stories we tell children to help them through adolescence (the loveliest lies of all) and a place where lost souls end up. So, basically, if history had a recycle bin, that would be the unknown. That's my theory anyways.
I like this theory. I like it more than the idea of it just being a modern retelling of Dante’s inferno considering the ppl in this world aren’t necessarily evil and while some are dead, some clearly aren’t

The story of "Over the Garden Wall"is very similar to "The Divine Comedy"(or "Dante's Inferno"). Wirt is Dante, Greg is Virgil. In the story, Dante tries to get back his love Beatrice from the Devil.Theres a few other hints that they're dead(or on the way to being dead),like the name Pottsfield(a potters field was a mass grave for poor people), needing two pennies to get on the ferry(similar to the stories of Charon the boatman(the reason people would put pennies on the eyes of the dead)and Quincy Endicott's grave being in "the Eternal Garden"in episode 9. Divine Comedy: 1.The entrance to purgatory. In the story, Dante and Virgil encounter a wolf and(I think)a lion that attack them before they escape. (Wirt and Greg face the corrupted dog). 2. Limbo: Where Dante is judged by King Minos(Enoch the Pumpkin King judges the children and says he "has to punish them"). 3. Lust: The teacher is so smitten by Jimmy Brown that she is unable to even teach her class properly. 4. Gluttony: Throughout the episode, Greg continually grabs food in the Dark Lantern, but we never see him eat a bite. 5. Greed: Quincy Endicott is the epitome of this, even about things he has done for his money. 6.Anger: Wirt learns of Beatrice's betrayal and, because of this, he steals the scissors that she needed to make her family human again out of spite. 7. Heresy: Auntie Whispers and Lorna dress is very puritan garb and Lorna is possessed by a demon. Nuff said. 8. Violence: Greg gets involved with the war between the people of Cloud City and the North Wind. 9.Fraud: Wirt feels like a fraud compared to Jason Funderberker, his music and poetry being bad and not measuring up to Sara. And Halloween is about dressing up as something you're not. 10.Treachery: Dante faces the Devil(the Devil also has been called "Lucifer"and "The Beast"). Also, the punishment for people condemned to the 9th Circle are to be transformed into trees. It wasn't in Wirts head. You can see Jason Fundderberker(the frog's)belly light up as Greg dances with him at the end. Auntie Whispers bell is still inside him.
You didn’t really talk about what you think of the episodes you just keep talking about how weird they’re are. That was really disappointing, and I would recommend when your gonna give a comment you should pause the video to not miss anything.
One of my favorites (tied with Gravity Falls)! Always fantastic to see new reactions to it! I understand the confusion, but that's one of the great things that lend it so well to rewatches! You discover new things each time! If you ever want more, not only is there an art book, there's a pilot episode, and a comic series.
Ooo Stephanie, maybe you could watch some select episodes/mini series from Adventure Time! Or also, I think you might like Gravity Falls! Both are good but GF might be shorter/better for a reaction vid
the show is definitely a love letter to old-timey animation and storytelling that I enjoyed thoroughly as someone who grew up reading grimm fairy tales (the pre-disney but still kinda scrubbed versions) and watching classic 30s/40s cartoons. It also has a lowkey sus nostalgia for a certain never-was "simpler innocent time" that I side-eye but that's a different convo. I firmly believe over the garden wall is an actual place they were transported to via the younger brother being a bridge through his innocence and imagination. I don't think Wert could go by himself. I don't know the trope name, but a magical dream realm.
Yes all that you just said is exactly my thoughts. This is the kind of media I miss in this cold, logical, and cynical world we live in. Fairytales are to me been done dirty the past few generations so it's rare to see one actually played straight, you know?
I like the mix of what we recommend and what you like! Now I have plenty of new shows to watch 👌 My boyfriend and I just started watching fleabag yesterday and it's AMAZING!
My friends and I love to watch this near Halloween. Every year, I go to a friends house and they invite some of their friends to come and we all watch it and it’s a lot of fun. Also, 2 interesting factoids: 1. The voice actor of The Beast is an actual opera singer 2. The Beast and the Woodsman are based off an old legend (I forget where) a friend once told me. It’s a very cool and interesting tale, but she couldn’t remember how the story ended.
So, fact about Babes in the Wood, that episode is INTENTIONALLY like that to make the viewer feel uncomfortable, like they've forgotten or missed something important.
Also, even though the beast represents something completely different, a lot of inspiration for his character matches a figure from a German tale called Erlkönig, (It was put to song by Franz Shubert) who steals the souls of children. The horns, the singing, and the cape are all identifiable traits from that legend.
I ain't even done with the video yet and I already feel like you reaction to Adventure Time would be amazing XD Some eps are so utterly random and end so weirdly XD Though it is 10 seasons (283 episodes). Though they're only 11 ish mins each. Food for thought ^^ Ok, back to the other half of the video XD
Its a fever dream because it’s literally a fever dream of two boys who get hypothermia after almost drowning in a lake during halloween, alot of the conflict comes from the older brothers teenage anxiety hence why the younger brother is so unbothered by the depictions of the unknown that is the afterlife. I just watched the whole show for the first time 10 minutes ago but thats my theory
it wasnt in his mind i think they just went onto another world where the time stands still and then when they defeated the monster wat they probably needed to do to come home they came back again. i mean this is what i think :3
You know, if I had never known of Over The Garden Wall, and you pitched me "autumnal road trip through appalachian silent hill" I would not have been certain that would be good, but damn if they didn't knock it out of the park
If you noticed at the end of the last episode, the frog has the bell in his stomach, so it was not just a sleeping dream. I had thought of Wirt and Beatrice ending up together too, lol even though they were from different times!
It wasn't all in his head. I remember watching this in my freshman years. It has resemblance to Dante's journey to inferno. In the end they fell into the lake, and after that they actually took a journey to the afterlife, many characters has symbolism
I'm so excited for you! I've been waiting for the spooky season to watch your reaction to one of my favorite short cartoon series ever. 😝✌You won't regret it!
ok, First, the 1930s Jack Frost is one of my favorite cartoons. Second, I LOVED your reaction to this XD this is one of my favorite shows and have done a yearly re-watch of it every October. According to the art book, they were trying to go for an art style that was both" timeless and unique" and even went so far as to model certain movements off of 1930 Disney cartoons (which is where you're getting the Jack Frost feel) and they liked the way old cinema used pure black shadows which both added a unique tone to the animation and simplified backgrounds since the backgrounds are so detailed they ended up switching animation studios at least once because finding artists to work on them was difficult. Just some fun facts.
Both the animation and the music had a very 1930s feel to it, even though it was set in (relatively) modern times. Speaking of deep cartoons..."Infinity Train" is great.
In the last scene in the hospital you can see that the frog is shinning because of the bell, so they did were in The Unknown, which is a kind of in-between life and death. There are lots of hidden clues about this, like in the cemetery Greg and Wirt are close to the tomb of "Quincy Endicott".

Hell yes! I f'n love this show/short movie
Also, even though the beast represents something completely different, a lot of inspiration for his character matches a figure from a German tale called Erlkönig, (It was put to song by Franz Shubert) who steals the souls of children. The horns, the singing, and the cape are all identifiable traits from that legend.
it’s 10x better on a rewatch
You should watch color out of space my favorite this year
We don't have a TV at home so I'm wondering where people get to watch shows like these
Omg this is one of my favorite series ever so happy you reacted
I haven't watched your video yet, but I love Over the Garden Wall and can't wait to hear your thoughts about it
I ain't even done with the video yet and I already feel like you reaction to Adventure Time would be amazing XD Some eps are so utterly random and end so weirdly XD Though it is 10 seasons (283 episodes). Though they're only 11 ish mins each. Food for thought ^^ Ok, back to the other half of the video XD
Haha an awesome reaction~
Very nice job
Hope you liked the music
Also I bet you have 50 plaid things! 30 shirts 10 jackets 9 pants, and 1 shoe 🤣
Your watching a masterpiece
I appreciate you ran with the recommendation, it was really a pleasure, and THAT'S A ROCK FACT!
You know, if I had never known of Over The Garden Wall, and you pitched me "autumnal road trip through appalachian silent hill" I would not have been certain that would be good, but damn if they didn't knock it out of the park
This was so sweet and relatable. This show really is a trip and I am glad you shared your experience!
If you noticed at the end of the last episode, the frog has the bell in his stomach, so it was not just a sleeping dream.
I had thought of Wirt and Beatrice ending up together too, lol even though they were from different times!
Another one you should watch is Infinity Train 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻 Who else agrees?
I SECOND THIS
Definietly!
The frog swallows the bell, and in the last episode when greg shakes the frog the bell is glowing in it's stomach showing that the unknown was real.
I'M THE HIGHWAYMAN
ok, First, the 1930s Jack Frost is one of my favorite cartoons.
OMG I CANNOT EXPLAIN HOW EXCITED I AM UR WATCHING THIS YAYAYAYAYAYA
Autum. Haloween. OTGW. It's all the same.
This show.is tooo good!!!!! Hilda is very good also
You should watch Bee and puppycat. It's weird and beautiful too!
Yeah I'd definitely watch Stephanie react to bee and puppycat
She would definitely love Bee and Puppycat
Is it just me or is there some audio static ?
Both the animation and the music had a very 1930s feel to it, even though it was set in (relatively) modern times.
Speaking of deep cartoons..."Infinity Train" is great.
Your Fleabag video was fantastic, and like Fleabag deserves way more views.
I just watched it for the first time too
No way this is gonna be amazing. So much nostalgia
