Great job covering all the important details. The mic sounds incredibly clear and natural. I honestly preferred the unprocessed sound to the processed sound you demoed at the end. The processing made your wet mouth noises noticeable, whereas they hadn't jumped out in the unprocessed version.
Unusually good directionality for a cardioid, and without the rear lobe of a supercardioid. I love the SE-V7, but sadly, its magnetic noise sometimes spoils my studio noise floor. The E835 'hum compensating coil' really saves me! (rockers: think mic with a humbucker!) The directionality and EM resistance give me a path for voiceover when background is high. I developed an EQ for real sound (50/-12, 100/+3 , 200/-1 , 1000/-3 , 10000/-4, 15000/0), but the E835 is still clean, crisp and bright. For studio engineering, this is a great friend. Any 1-5/8 " foam pop filter will do for pop, but a thin one works fine..

Nice video. What led me here is the fact that our band vocalist opened a bar and this is thye mic he purchased for us his backups. And he described it just the way you did-it captures "important" sounjds and rejects the unwanted ones. and i already looked this up on our local online store and this is within my budget. I am planning to get one for my bedroom studio because my cheap Boiya Mics capture ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING about the house. So i cannot do my talking head vlogs when the place is noisy. lmao. So i think this is the answer to my dilemma. Thank you so much!

Can’t be worse than my 20 year old Best Buy cheapie. Thoughts on using a pop filter as well? I’m particularly sensitive to S plosives because they sound really terrible when I listen to podcasts on my cell phone in the car.

These mics are excellent. I recorded a metal band and the singer was having trouble doing vocals with headphones on, as well as keeping his hands off the mic stand. Solution: i gave him the the Sennheiser e835, told him to hold it and cranked the monitors to an ungodly level (probably somewhere from 65 to 80 db). You couldn't hear any bleed and the vocal tracks turned out great.

I've been using these for recording podcasts and when performing live music. Such a good mic. I think I got mine for $70 used and sometimes they go on sale for under $100. One of these with a cloudlifter and a focusrite interface into adobe audition. I also use it for work zooms, streaming, pretty much everything.
What a great video, thanks for taking the time to share. I'm really interested in one of these for solo performance with my acoustic guitar as I believe it will pick up less of the guitar than any thing else available at this price point. After watching your video I will say that I actually prefer the sound of your voice without the post processing, it sounds much clearer and more natural the processed sound to me actually sounds processed. JMHO for what it's worth and not a criticism of your excellent video.

I actually thought the unprocessed signal of this mic sounded much more pleasing and natural, the processed signal brought out lip and mouth noises in the top end frequencies which I found a little distracting. The way I would probably process the signal is to not high self boost the high frequencies but do a broad notch around 800Hz-2KHz (maybe 1-3dB) (800Hz-2KHz as the higher frequencies above 1-2KHz are already there) to bring the vocal forward just a touch and then just a touch of compression (1-3dB gain reduction when you get loud so it is basically doing nothing most of the time).
Thank you for the review you did a great job and really like this microphone but I don’t think the Dbx processor makes this mic sound better, sorry it is my opinion or maybe with different settings.
What additional gear would you recommend to compliment the e835 (? I currently have the mic, but i tried connecting it to my pc with a xlr - usb cable, doesn't seem to work.
You’re gonna need an audio interface. It’s a box that takes the analogue signal from your mic and turns it into a digital signal your computer can handle. Check out the Scarlett 2i2. It’s a great starter.

I think it comes down to the 'presence bumps': For me, a more hi-fi/refreshing sound on the e835, with less fatigue, flatter mids. Now I don't EQ the e835 anymore...it's nice as is...like it more with time.
Yes, anywhere you have a lot of background noise a mic like this works great. You could also try the Sennheiser e845. It has even more sound rejection, but the down side is you need people to talk *directly* into it.
Great questions. The e845 is even better at preventing bleed/spill so if you're in a truly noisy situation it may be worth the extra $20. It will be a little more finicky with where the speaker is located relative to the mic though. I don't think the e855 is in production anymore and to be honest I don't know much about it. hey man, using the e835 now for a daily livestream rap show. I feel like I’m not using it properly, maybe I’m getting too close and making phasing issues not sure. I like the big Afro pop filter too. I don’t want to switch to my condenser yet I’d prefer to keep it dynamic. Right now I’m taking a bit of bass out and trying to push the highs + a bit of mids. All a learning process. Wondering if you have any recording tips
First of all, you've got talent keep going man. Second, I think the sound you've got a good sound on your latest episode. As far as tweaking EQ, so much of it is down to personal preference. My advice would be to only make adjustments when you're listening back to your recordings. When you're recording your own voice it's easy to "mis-hear" things because you're hearing the headphones and the sound of yourself in the room. Listen to the playback, tweak, record again and repeat. Traditionally rap is done on condensers, but I understand for the sake of the live stream wanting to stick to dynamic. With either mic, to get that hard-hitting rap sound, you'll want a compressor. For live streaming, a hardware compressor might work best. The DBX 166xl (used) or DBX 286s are good and relatively cheap. Watch a few videos on compression technique and I'm sure you'll get the hang of it! Thanks for dropping by! Best of luck.

Any generic 1-5/8" foam pop filter is fine. It has excess high end anyway.

I have four of them I use when hosting an open mic. I picked up one of them, an e835s (with a switch) at a pawn shop for $40.

@@dashodashev they don't but they're pretty quiet, the preamp from the audio interface takes care of that without adding a lot of noise.
