I really like the idea of it! My only comment is that the lid seems oversize for the box (because of the width of the wood). One suggestion I would have to try for the next one, is to first make whole box as one piece, and then cut the lid out of it. Maybe add a 8th of an inch of thickness to the new lid so its a little bit bigger (like a paper one) and then have the colors meet together at the seam where the lid meets the box. Just an idea! Really like the colors and how it matches the shoes!
To add to this, I'd even keep the angle of the lid, and have the two colors line up as a "seam"... also hide those hinges internally. Then if you want to get really crazy some recessed lines for a battery powered LED strip that turns on when the lid is opened.
I came here to say the same thing. I RARELY have any criticism of Shaun’s design but this really stuck out like a sore thumb to me. I would do a rabbet on the outside top of the box and a matching rabbet inside the bottom of the top so that the top appears to be just a little bigger than the box. And I think I’d go with no hinge and just have it lift off.
Same here. I can't fault Shaun's work as it far outweighs my own skill, but the lid looked....out of place, and considering the internal structure was ply, it was an easy (disregarding the veneering 🤒 and inlays), cheap task to do. All in all though, excellent job, and as always, a great video.
I love boxes. I build at least one between big projects. I find it a great way to improve in details. Two ideas to make the box even more complicated 😅 1. Continues grain all around (when you slice a piece of wood you can use it in a way that the grain appears to flow all a round) 2. Wooden hinges (if well done it disappears nearly) I watch your videos for years and always get inspired! Great work!
I like it! New ideas, new textures, new designs are always fun. Particularly when they mesh with our passions (I didn't know you were a sneakerhead)! Two questions: 1. Why butt joints over mitered corners on the fluorescent inlay? 2. Did you 3D model/consider the lid's side angles cut out of the sides, instead of overlapping? That way, you could put the shoes in the box, standing up, and with the lid open see part of the shoes given the cutaway side and front caused by the open lid? Bonus 3rd idea, phrased as a question: What about making him a sneaker display stand? Then use the tiny lights from your prior lamp project to inlay, and use fluorescent epoxy as the LED light's diffuser, so it's like a lighted stand/showcase for multiple pairs of sneakers?
In case they have not been given away yet, the shoes could benefit from a nice cloth bag, they are a bit lost, floating around inside the box. The bag with drawstring could be loosely fit and help take some of that volume. Plus fancy shoes do come in a bag inside the box. The box is very nice too, I know a kid who is lucky.
that crazy yellow neon reminds me of the Lego sets from my childhood, it became very popular at one time. insanely cool. thank you for the memories this box brought me! also, a change of pace by doing something small (or large), after many projects of doing the opposite, is very refreshing. I mostly make small things, and cherish the opportunity to make something large. thanks!

I think you bring up a good point that while a "Wooden Shoebox" is a bit of an unusual woodworking project, it is still something that can be done at any skill level. Sometimes it's not about the end product, but what skills you pick up and things you learn while making the project. Nicely done
That a sweet shoebox lol. Small recommendation on version 2.0 - maybe try a thinner plywood for the top, I think the 1/2" gave it a bit of an aggressive/large overhang.
so freaking nice! yo keep coming back to that it is a simple box. it´s not. just smaller pieces. makes the fiddly pieces even harder to do.... thanks for the video!
Cute big project! Oh and maybe a handy tip. When is it possible to temporarily fix the sheet of mdf to/over the table like a diving board you can put the bag over the sheet easily.
Fun idea would be to use the neon glow sticks for edge banding on a guitar. Especially cool on a Parker Fly or Ibanez Gem, really poke that nostalgia bear!
Hey Shaun, loved all the accents of the white logo, neon epoxy & oversized angled lid. Dude yr awesome! Im just finishing one of your/foureyes table build. the design is brilliant & the plan is worth every dime.
Love the change of pace. I think your choice of epoxy was spot on! As someone who's bought plans from you and Chris. I've always gravitated towards your teaching style. That being said I'd be first in line for a fusion 360 lesson ml. Thanks shawn or I mean chopmaster!
There has been a few comments about the lid, and I agree having it about half the thickness would look more visually appealing in my opinion. What could have also been cool with this shoe is to have some see through side panels to match the shoes aesthetic and "lightness" that shines through. I like the pre-poured epoxy and attaching as opposed to pouring it into a void. For something like this an inlayed white epoxy disk with the Jordan logo cut out in each colour mounted slightly off center from each other could look really cool.
This looks fantastic, so please take my next comment in the spirit of constructive feedback. I think the lid appears a bit oversized for the box. You might be able to use the same plywood but cut a lip into both the inside of the lid and the outside of the box, so when they mate, it gives the illusion of being as thin as cardboard. That said, I really love the overall design-your attention to detail is amazing, both in the build and the video! I aspire to be at your level some day!!
That's really cool! ❤ If you're making another one may I suggest doing rabbets on the lid and the bottom behind the lid so it looks like it's as thin as a regular cardboard box as well? Maybe overkill idk 😂
That box has some detail and that was some effort to put into a shoe box. The only thing I would ad is that the interior doesn't live up to the hype of the exterior. This is just my opinion. I love everything you build.
I know I'm throwing alot of opinions out there but I love this channel. I feel like if the lid was thinned way down it would've looked alot more sleek. I'm sure that's obvious to most so idk why I typed this. Lmao
You commented towards the end of the video during your chat with Marko that you were a little disappointed about the see through nature of the neon trips to see the wood grain behind. Could you use a white opaque resin to hide the wood grain but not the translucently?
He I saw you clearing out the cnc lines with a pin. I did the same thing until I bought a small dental pick set and have found the holy grail of tools for that particular niche.
Put velvet the under side of the top lid, and the box needs LED light on the inside. I made some ambrosia maple light boxes with miters and acrylic joints. It makes the wood look like it’s floating in water. You could definitely do it with colored epoxy way better. The acrylic turned out okay, but epoxy would have been perfect. Also, not sure if wood bleach ruins the chatoyance of the flame maple, but it would be worth trying on some veneer to see if you can get it closer to sneaker white.
Beautiful box! I just don't understand the concept of collectible shoes. Shoes are to be worn until they fall apart, not kept in mint condition. I guess because I have to spend quite a lot on everyday shoes, I can't imagine not wearing them.
