Thing is except for the first 2, I can't say I'm fluent in French or German. I'm at a stage where I understand more than I can speak.
AS A EUROPEAN I am embarrassed that I only 2 languages [English and Bulgarian - but I can understand Russian a bit] I am extremely bad at languages, my neighbour speaks 7 He is a taxi driver.
As a European I speak fluently Dutch, German and English and as a 53 year old I have started ,just for fun, to learn French but teaching an old dog new tricks isn't easy especially French.

First, language acquisition requires consistent exposure and immersion, unless one is talented. Second, I have a very hard time differentiating sounds making understanding song lyrics and often speech challenging. My ex was extremely talented with regard to language. I saw this twenty years ago when I'd get on online job sites and most decent jobs required you to be bilingual. And even the ones that didn't require it for the job still listed it as a preferred skill to have to work there because many of their clients/customers only spoke Spanish.
Well, look at the examples we have now! Trump, Hegseth and Robert Kennedy are the biggest examples of failing forward in history. None of those white men have the knowledge, experience or skills to be in those positions, and they are all morally unqualified. And they complain about DEI? FFS.
Just look at our cars. I've watched enough tow truck driver channels picking up brand new Jeep Wagoneer lemons with double digit miles on them, or Teslas with huge panel gaps and cheapo plastic trim, to never ever drive American. Our workers just don't care.
If you're living in South Florida... you've got bigger problems than having to speak Spanish or whatever. S. Florida is a dumpster waiting for a fire waiting for a hurricane to put out the fire.
Then why has American worker productivity risen at the same consistently-high rate for the last 50+ years? I've worked with consultants from India in my information technology job. Their grammar and writing is much better than ours. It is also our duty to educate our young and encourage them to be excited about working with other countries. Learning new languages and enjoying other cultures makes us grow spiritually. Yes, I said that. We become better and happier people. I know because I experienced it. We now have politicians actively working to bring our country and young people down by not educating them and isolating them from the world. If immigrants come here and have children their children will experience the same set backs education wise that ours are experiencing now. I will not put my fellow Americans down for their ignorance because I don't think they know any better. Our leadership has perpetuated that problem and I make sure I don't vote for that kind of leadership.
Do be honest they complain. For example in my country you are pretty often paid less in jobs with english requirement (at least B2 level) than in jobs where only native language is needed.
@katieb3059 That may be specific to you, but in general, English being a universal language in business, it is wholly accepted that knowing how to speak English is par for the course. My family in The Netherlands and Belgium all were taught English in school at an early age, they all speak it perfectly, and they don't see it as oppressive but as an asset.
@katieb3059 Yes, one of my cousins is a translator and interpreter for major European companies and she's very well off because of it. My initial point was that people should see being bilingual as a strength, but some seem to view Spanish as a second language as oppression which is incredibly ignorant.
I'm a critical care nurse. I grew up speaking only English and never was offered any Spanish class until high school. I studied Spanish in high school and college. I took more classes than what was required (I did not minor in Spanish). Over the years, I continue to practice speaking Spanish- not a lot, less than 30 min per week, probably. It would be better to practice more, but life is busy- I think any little bit helps. All this to say that it isn't even about being competitive for work. I'm a critical care nurse. Trust and believe we're in short supply, and you should pray there is no health crisis during the Trump administration. Back to the point- do you have any idea how deeply appreciated it is when I speak Spanish with my patients and their families? My ability is very limited and imperfect, but they feel SAFER and CARED for because I have taken the time and effort to communicate in their first language. Who wouldn't want that from the person directly responsible for their health, comfort, and dignity?
@shadow_self_25 It's actually easier and much faster to learn words in context by writing the word in a complete sentence and then reading it aloud, even if at first you have to look up every word in the sentence. It becomes much easier very quickly. Random words learned 1 at a time don't stick as well for most people.
My younger brother worked for a company that employed Polish speaking carpenters. His boss was impressed when he not only understood these carpenters but also that he spoke Polish. This was in North Carolina. Hmm. Multi language is a good thing.
Oh snap! I speak 3 languages, sing in multiples. But I remember back in 1968, when I was working temp jobs, we were bored. So one of my colleagues tried to teach me just how to say numbers, 1 through 10 in Polish, and I fumbled the heck out of it. 🤪 and of course, there's a sidebar, which is computer illiteracy. Boy, that is something you do not want to admit. Especially in the job market.
It is one of my pet peeves that so many Americans (and Brits - I am British) expect bilingual people to speak English exclusively, and are downright offended at the idea of learning another language themselves. Even when they are in someone else's country! Well done for this woman pointing out the pitiful inadequacy of those bigots who complain about people who can speak more languages than they can.
I'm English. I am still happily at work at the age of seventy. I freelance, and my ability to speak two other languages fluently means I work in all sorts of places with all sorts of (usually) very interesting people. I'd be bored to death if I had to retire. :) Monoglots don't always realise what they're missing - being bi- or multilingual is good for you, try googling "benefits of bilingualism."
"THE JOB MARKET REQUIRES MORE SKILLS THAN WHAT YOU HAVE". I lived in south Florida for 8 years. You better speak Spanish or Haitian Creole or French if you want an edge in the job market there. My friend from NYC was promoted and transferred to Florida by her company because she speaks, reads and writes proper Spanish. She works for the banking industry. I myself am a chef. In my field speaking Spanish as a second language has helped to get me great jobs in NY and Florida because of high concentrations of Latinos in my field. In South America, Europe, Asia , the Middle East, etc. most people speak more than one language, English being one of them. America we are behind most of the world on this.
I own a Border collie, that dog was in a English speaking family, it was giving to us at the age of 3 yo, we speak French at home, but sometime in English, at first the dog was confuse, after 2 weeks, he could obey and listen to my wife and understand all the commands. Now the dog is bilingual, could he apply for her job .??I also speak Spanish , not totally fluid but enough to be understood....BTW I m in Canada, and proud of speaking different languages.

Spanish is the second most spoken language on the planet and the first is not English, that's third. The most spoken language on Earth is Mandarin Chinese. Americans are not the center of the universe. We need to collectively get a grip on that.
Just a little fun fact, as you state, Mandarin is the most spoken 1st language. Also, English is the most spoken 2nd language. Maybe because Americans don't learn anything else. Everyone needs to learn more than 1 and schools do a horrible job, if at all, for teaching languages in the US.
You've come to the cause of all our political theater right now. We have to deal with MAGA because America isn't the center of the world anymore, because big corporations have facilitated the collective dumbing down of our nation. The single biggest irony is how MAGA caused MAGA's problems 😅
@@boomergames8094 Schools do an excellent job of teaching foreign languages in the US and everyone learns one. It’s just that decent folks have no need to use them so we forget.
The thing is that when I hear someone speak who is multi-lingual, I don’t get mad. I get envious, and realize I should have paid closer attention in high school Spanish.
I am a 56 y/o veteran, former cop, retired federal agent! I started learning Spanish in high school because even in the 1980s we knew that remaining competitive meant being able to communicate with, understand and compete with our foreign partners. My Spanish isn’t perfect. But I can get around town and watch a ball game with folks that do not speak English. I have set foot on all continents in the world but two and I have always tried to learn a bit of whatever language I could wherever I was. It is a sign of intelligence. Americans believe the world should bow and cater to them. It won’t! Mediocrity demands the world sink to its level so it won’t feel bad. That is the fear of teaching real history, true facts about what really happened and who was responsible. If they speak English, they can get better jobs, earn more money, get an education, work with you at your job, get promoted at your job, now they're your boss, own a business, run for office, run for the school board, city council, state legislature, and make laws for YOU. Don't generalize. America is not composed of a single group. It's composed of peoples from practically every country in the world. Also, just because someone speaks English doesn't mean they speak English. 😋 Look at how many dialects there are in just England alone.

Thanks for sharing this. I’ve always felt this way about people who speak more than one language. Totally owned and crushed, with good manners and facts!!!
Some people forget that there are people, languages, and cultures that were here before British colonies expanded into the United States making English a widespread language. The majority of people in California are of Native and Mexican descent. There are entire employment sectors where Spanish is the predominant language. Being able to have a pleasant conversation with the people around me in a language they are most comfortable speaking just facilitates communication, teamwork, and camaraderie.
You are correct sir, dragged and owned! Had to watch it a few times. Nothing but the truth. And certain people always so sure that "other people" are DEI hires. No, they have a particular skill set ...
I've asked a few R/MAGA relatives and others the old "gee, I have two really great potential hires and I can't decide..." question and without fail, they ask to see a picture. I never have one so they ask really odd questions (like about hair) trying to probe for ethnicity or religious affiliation. I play dumb enough to frustrate them into plainly asking what they really want to ask. Next I'm going to make an identical pair of resumes _with_ photos but I'll get them "mixed up"…. BTW, I'm one of those evil overlords who needs bilingual people. I manage a call center with clients in around 38 countries. It's only good business to accommodate your customers, and speaking their language is just about the most basic way possible.
I've lost out on a few jobs because I didn't speak Portuguese. While I am bilingual, Portuguese is not one of my languages. How can I possibly get mad at anyone but myself for my lack of skills. Dulingo is accessible to everyone.

It's that narrow minded thinking that holds America back. I visited Amsterdam, great experience. I know 3 languages because of my heritage but in Amsterdam most kids learn atleast 5 languages in primary school.
I’m struggling to learn Spanish and I know it’s a me-thing than a market-thing (I seriously regret not taking the opportunity to study abroad in Costa Rica years ago). So much respect for anyone who speaks more than one language, even if it’s not perfect or fluent.
Languages are hard to learn. (That doesn’t mean they’re not worthwhile, but fluency is really hard to achieve.) My first response to someone bilingual is respect.
Functional english is required if you wan't to access well paying jobs or work internationally in most countries. Good english is absolutely mandatory to access superior education almost everywhere, because most books and tools are made or translated to english. We non- english speakers begin the run with that systemic disadvantage. And then these privileged ignorants complain about learning a second language? Give me a break.
@ПаніПончик I supose that can be true for the written part. For the pronunciation component, oh god, we english-second users usually speak so bad! XD. At least in Chile, our accent is really incompatible with english.
"Even her dog is bilingual." Great comeback! Learning a language is easier if you have a friend or co-worker who speaks another language to help you understand verb placement. The Japanese I picked up watching " Shogun" helped me when I visited Japan. I learned more Spanish when I lived in Chicago because of "Maxwell St." I learned more bits of other languages.
My manager at work has slowly been picking up a bit of Spanish, too, due to a large amount of customers who only speak Spanish that we get. He knows some basic words, and how some products are said in Spanish due to constant exposure so he can at least somewhat understand a customer request. Not knowing even the basics in this day and age is pure ignorance and laziness.
I love your content we NEED people like you out here to catch the folks "calling the kettle black". Too many, hope you can keep up, your doing an awesome job sir!
I'm monolingual, and I absolutely agree with her. My lack of language skill is MY Problem, not anyone else. If I don't like it, then there's tools and classes out there for help me to start. MAGA making excuses to cover up their bigotry once again.
In Europe, kids are taught two or more languages. They learn English because that how we do business. I have a friend from Mauritius (for those who don't know it is a country in Africa) who speaks French, Spanish, Arabic, his native tongue plus several dialects. Oh, he speaks English as well. I took Spanish in High School and that was almost 40 years ago. I plan to learn it again.
In several German universities, there are entire degree courses taught exclusively in Englisch to meet internationally unified standards. Students are simply expected to know that foreign language well enough if they want to study in the field. And most students who had the required education to access university do.
@@DoloresLehmann our system could use to introduce more language options for students. I studied Latin in high school because the Spanish classes were over full. This was in Miami at the time. Speaking Spanish came in really well in that town. I had a Puerto Rican boyfriend so I did learn some Spanish. I studied Italian on my own. I think people just should do it on their own at home too.
@ Yes, there are so many possibilities today to learn! I also had Latin in school (Germany) because at the time, it was the prerequisite to take the linguistic branch of education, and I certainly didn't want to take the maths/science branch, which would have been the other option. But it's something you quickly forget because there's no chance to practice. But all the other languages, with the internet, movies, other media, you can practice them so easily! Even if you never had them in school, or just a very basic level. I practiced my English mostly watching movies in English with English subtitles. It helps immensely to listen and read at the same time. You learn the spelling and the pronounciation almost effortless.
Absolutely LOVE this reality check for those low skilled people. Being bilingual or trilingual in this world is a must if you want to be competitive in the world markets. Low educated workers who can not communicate effectively should go back to school and learn more languages.
The thing that's so astonishing to me is that the US is, as far as I'm aware, the only country that doesn't have an official national language. That probably won't remain the case with Trump in office, but we specifically have laws that require the government to accommodate non-English speakers BECAUSE we don't have a national language. As someone who still isn't conversational in another language myself, MAGA lady is low skill, especially because foreign language is a requirement for a high school diploma in Florida schools and Spanish is offered in ALL OF THEM.
@SaraShockley well, they are trying to round them all up and send them back to their native (hopefully) countries. While Trump did win the election in November, the USA, and the world, lost.
On forums for moving abroad I often see posts by Americans who think speaking only English is enough to get a job here in Europe. I tell them hospitality workers here in Prague- many think they can come here and just get a job as a bartender, generally speak 3 or more languages. I’m not talking reading and writing proficiency , but conversational.
This is basically a repeat of the original discourse around Quebec’s original movement of independence last century, before the anglos gaslit the younger generations that it wasn’t about socialism and pro-union regulations, and before the even younger ethnofascist teenagers of rural Quebec sprouted like vermin within the political party previously associated with pro-immigration laws, pro-globalist economy (mainly with Europe) and in favor of separating the Church from the State. Glad to see the Latin Americans who don’t support Trump are this quick to call out the monolinguists’ laziness, entitlement and hypocrisy.
I'm white and agree with the second lady, more than one language gives an advantage. Unfortunately I suck at learning a different language. I can't comprehend as quickly as some people speak. That's on me, not their problem.
I don't speak a second language. I also don't know where the fuel pump on my car is, how to remove an appendix or drive a semi but I do have an accounting degree. Guess why I don't complain about people with language or other skills better than mine in those jobs.
I appreciate this. I also don’t speak “car”. (Or plumbing… or electricity.) That doesn’t detract from the skills I do have, but I appreciate (and rely on) people who understand these things.
Bravo señora!! U a persona que no sabe dos idiomas en veces no avanza en la vida. Education is imperative I don’t know why being bilingual has always been frowned upon.
I remember years ago in High school, some kids were making fun of another kids accent. A history teacher tore into the kids and told them not to be jealous that hes smarter because he speaks 2 languages
On top of that Florida was a Spanish colony almost for longer than it has been part of the USA. People seem to think the world revolves around them and should accommodate to them in particular.
As a Dane that grew up in South Africa I personally agree with this woman, and I'm sorry to say that I don't speak any actual African lanuage, not even fanaglo which woud actually be a start. But I do speak English, Afrikaans and Danish all three fluently but they all three are germanic lanuages so not too hard to learn as a kid. But I just love the fact that this woman says that even her dog is bilingual, it really says something about what she really thinks of the situation that currently is the USA.
Bilingualism is great, but if a job in an English-speaking country only requires Spanish, you often end up with a workforce that isn’t truly bilingual just Spanish speaking. If Spanish is required, it should also include fluent English to be a genuine bilingual requirement.
I’m a blinding white girl whose Hubby is Hawaiian/Filipino. We recently moved to Hawai’i so Hubby could be with family. I’m working hard to learn Hawaiian & Pidgin. It’s not easy & I admit my Spanish is better. I know it’s up to me to accommodate them, not the other way around. I will also add that I’m continually embarrassed by tourists making asses of themselves. I admit that I’ve had natives & locals be wary and reserved with me at first because of years of entitled tourist mistreatment. I don’t take it personally and do my best to not reenforce the stereotypes associated with the tourists.
Only speaking one language is not the flex that some people consider it. I've been bilingual since childhood and even that isn't very impressive in many parts of the world.
An African family moved into my aunts neighborhood, and my 9 year old cousin is the only one who can communicate with them. She spent time with the family, learned the culture, and picked up the language rather quickly. If only adults were that open minded!
I am from SoFL. Not a native Spanish speaker but being surrounded by Spanish speakers and learning Spanish was by far the greatest part of living there. How to properly enunciate, I learned verb conjugation, I sound almost native when I’m in a Spanish language speaking country and I can pick up other languages easier. It’s embarrassing that every first world country is encouraged to learn multiple languages but we are so fucking racist here in the US we see it as a burden instead of an amazing opportunity.
Everywhere else in the world it's completely normal to speak at least two languages, only in the US is this something people complain about. I speak two fluently and know the basics of one other and I'm actually thankful it's a requirement in my country because it helps me so much to speak more than my first language (which isn't English).
I'd like it if you included the name of this intelligent woman in your description. And in the rest of your videos, going forward. Thanks, Tom. You're great.
La Florida (which was present day Florida plus parts of Louisiana, Georgia, North & South Carolina, Alabama and Mississippi) was Spanish for 300 years. English did not even begin to be spoken by the population of Florida and the panhandle until the 1800s.
America does NOT have an official language..... English just happened to be embraced as the most communicating language but it is not the official language........
....A law was passed many years ago....only English in the workplace...whites ALWAYS assumed they were being talked about. I want to say. Sometime in the 70's.. ??

I'm from Finland and I think most of the people who were born after 1970-1980 speak multiple languages here. First 9 years in school we learn english and swedish (second language in Finland) and many, myself included, wanted to learn also forth language, which was german for me. And I think this is very common in many European countries.
In Europe it is required in schools that children are multilingual. They are required to learn English and another language. I always say to Americans, "When you speak my language as well as I speak English, then you can make fun of me."
In European countries, you as an immigrant are pretty much required to learn the language of that specific country that you moved to in order to get any job at all. The average (for example) Swedish citizen will speak English to you, but speaking English alone will not land you a job there. It's a basic decency and skill expansion. Only in USA there are people larping as "master race" and refuse to acknowledge that outside world exists.

Only in America you can have a mindset like this. We in The Netherlands learn 3 languages minimum for multiple years. And that’s not even high education, just basic needed knowledge we call that.
My parents are Scottish and Grenadian so sadly I am not bilingual but always loved the fact friends and family in school and the work place spoke multiple languages from their backgrounds and I was in awe. Not once did I think it was a bad thing, it was always a flex to me and I got mad at them for being ashamed and trying to dampen it down in an English speaking world.
In my youth I lived in countries where most people understood a little English , so we compromised I learned some necessary phrases needed to get by on. what I am saying is you don't need to learn the complete language, but enough of it. By doing this it shows you respect their culture, and it make everyday life much easier. Don't go to other countries and think it is your way, that if they don't understand you, they are at fault not you.
There is no national language in America because there are so many languages that are spoken here. You would be better off learning another language. I agree with the Spanish speaker!
...my last dog was raised by a Spanish speaking household...it's all he knew...he couldn't understand anything I said...I took him to a bilingual person in the pet industry to make sure....I had to "teach him" english...so we could "communicate " ... the only word he knew was NO!!! Ha..since it's the same in both languages...🎉

Why does the US economy have some of the highest per-worker productivity of any economy in the world?
Shame on you for promoting exactly the fascist lies you pretend to want to stop. You're as much a part of the problem as these racist MAGAts.

In other countries, being proficient in English as a second language helps get specific jobs. People don't complain, they either do or don't.
@@Poppesque And does it help them earn more money? Because it's how it's usually presented around the world
@katieb3059 Yes, one of my cousins is a translator and interpreter for major European companies and she's very well off because of it. My initial point was that people should see being bilingual as a strength, but some seem to view Spanish as a second language as oppression which is incredibly ignorant.
Where she lives being bilingual is a highly marketable skill. Perhaps to OP could get a job as a DEI hire … oh wait … never mind.
She couldn't because DEI hires are qualified, contrary to what bigots and racist pretend.

My friend told me, one word a day. I'm going to start there.
You sound like a wonderful, caring and conscientious person. I wish you every success in your life.
A huge Bravo to you!! I can only imagine how comforting it is to be spoken to in your mother tongue while in the middle of a health-related situation.
@shadow_self_25 It's actually easier and much faster to learn words in context by writing the word in a complete sentence and then reading it aloud, even if at first you have to look up every word in the sentence.
It becomes much easier very quickly. Random words learned 1 at a time don't stick as well for most people.
No one ever accused a Trump voter of being smart. what a true and lovely take down.
My younger brother worked for a company that employed Polish speaking carpenters. His boss was impressed when he not only understood these carpenters but also that he spoke Polish. This was in North Carolina. Hmm. Multi language is a good thing.

So one of my colleagues tried to teach me just how to say numbers, 1 through 10 in Polish, and I fumbled the heck out of it. 🤪 and of course, there's a sidebar, which is computer illiteracy.

That "Even my dog is bilingual" is a very true statement. I communicate with mine in french and he totally understands me!
My Mexican dog who I taught English is trilingual 😂

Spanish is the second most spoken language on the planet and the first is not English, that's third. The most spoken language on Earth is Mandarin Chinese. Americans are not the center of the universe. We need to collectively get a grip on that.
Just a little fun fact, as you state, Mandarin is the most spoken 1st language.
Also, English is the most spoken 2nd language. Maybe because Americans don't learn anything else.
Everyone needs to learn more than 1 and schools do a horrible job, if at all, for teaching languages in the US.

"We demand meritocracy!!! Except for the part about having to compete - especially with brown people who're better prepared."

I've asked a few R/MAGA relatives and others the old "gee, I have two really great potential hires and I can't decide..." question and without fail, they ask to see a picture. I never have one so they ask really odd questions (like about hair) trying to probe for ethnicity or religious affiliation. Students are simply expected to know that foreign language well enough if they want to study in the field. And most students who had the required education to access university do.
@@DoloresLehmann our system could use to introduce more language options for students. I studied Latin in high school because the Spanish classes were over full. This was in Miami at the time.
Bilingualism is great, but if a job in an English-speaking country only requires Spanish, you often end up with a workforce that isn’t truly bilingual just Spanish speaking. If Spanish is required, it should also include fluent English to be a genuine bilingual requirement.

She is spot on.....Well said👏👏👏👏
Her dog speaks two languages? Amazing!
...my last dog was raised by a Spanish speaking household...it's all he knew...he couldn't understand anything I said...I took him to a bilingual person in the pet industry to make sure....I had to "teach him" english...so we could "communicate " ... the only word he knew was NO!!! Ha..since it's the same in both languages...🎉
