@@Loveofpets I've never dewormed until now, 20 years never had a problem. This year though - I think it was a combo of heat/age that lead to her getting infested. The dewormer isn't expensive and you can mix it in their water. When getting your birds the freshest millet you can find it comes with risks.

I'm sorry for your loss of Rosita :(
I had tried to use warm water to "soak" the vent of my female birds.
One time my lovebird, seemed a little clumsy at the bottom of the cage and I was able to tell an egg was ready to come out. Due to her slight clumsiness, I was worried if she could possibly starting to be egg bound. I held her and placed her tail and vent in some warm water hoping it could help. She did lay the egg after, so all was good.
The next time it was my older budgie. She has been living with another female for their whole lives. When I adopted them I was told they were 3 years old and I have them for 2 years, so they are about 5 years old. One day when I got home from work I saw blood all over the cage and Cloudy was missing a nail. It was the time I had to separate them when not monitored as they get into fights all the time. After the separation, one day Sunny appeared to be sick, not moving around and puffed up. Her vent was swollen and dirty. I gently washed her bottom with warm water every couple of hours for 2 days, then a day before our avian vet appointment, I saw an egg at the bottom of the cage.... I believe it was her first egg ever...

Donna, Another informative video that I’m sure will save lives. So sorry about Rosita! When you showed the sympathy card with the feathers I could feel the tears coming. As you noted, it is important to have an avian vet, and the card illustrates how the people at avian vets actually understand how much our birds mean to us. So many people say, “ It was just a bird. You can get a new one. “. They really do not understand. I will tell the people at my avian vet about your channel so they can pass the information to their clients, and the clients can be educated by your videos. Sending hugs from Florida.

Sorry for Rosie. Well my first experience that happened to me was I saw my only female lovebird different n I check on her thinking that she wasn’t eating properly n she was hungry too. But I saw/feel a bumpy around her leg n went I touched she was very uncomfortable n I got so nervous that I put drops of bottle water n carefully slowly pushed it out n rinse her because it was tiny bleeding too, I was so scared about her n didn’t wanted her to die, I put a little bit of antibiotics ointment on a cotton swab put some in around n hold her with a small towel then I made a thick mash of Harrison pellets mashed well n put in a dropper n feed her, then I put her inside her cage n she didn’t looked good but was feeling better than before, next day I feed her by hand another mash again twice a day n put some more antibiotics n by a week she started feeling more normal but no as before yet. N still here. I used ointment antibiotics not cream but u can used it to help push the egg out too put some on cotton swab n put it in n around not deep bc the bird are tiny, it will protect it from getting infected as well. I usually after 6pm check their crop to make sure they’re eating if their crop if it’s empty I hand feed again n make sure they don’t go to sleep hungry. When my pair of love birds stress out bc it’s a lot of noise from outside or I’m moving from apt they get nervous n forget to eat I notice it. Th egg bound happened only once but I so terrified that I wanted to help her a least, the bird still here with me, it happened 5 years ago. Each case is different but wanted to tell you what I did.

You have to try to get the eggs out by putting coconut or olive oil on her vagina and you have to try to push the eggs out for her....you have to be very gentle and delicate because if the eggs break inside her it will hurt her really badly and she probably will die...the eggs have to come out in one piece

Long ago when I only had budgies, I saw one of my birds with a swollen vent, and knew she had a egg stuck but there is at that time no Vets here. So she died as well. But I saw a video on how you manually can try softly with vaciline massage the vent and get the fleece to relive the egg. It was a breeder that breeds lots of birds.its quite a delicate process, but it seems one can do it if there is no other alternative. Thank you for this video! And thank you for showing visuals of what to look out for. I’m currently monitoring my cockatiel who’s about to lay her third egg and I’m trying to make sure she isn’t egg bound. She lays eggs quite frequently and I’m worried it’s taking a toll on her health. Do you have any tips for discouraging egg laying? I’ve tried rearranging her cage, adding new toys (she doesn’t care much for toys though), having her on a strict daylight schedule, and of course I feed her veggies, pellets (Harrisons), along with seeds. Unfortunately it seems that when I let her sit in my lap and give her head scratches, it triggers her egg laying, even though I’m careful to avoid touching her body. Not sure what to do at this point :(

    • @M00Nature
      @M00Nature 2 года назад

Donna gave some good tips in her video about decreasing the amount of light in her cage and not providing anything that would look like a nest cavity in her cage. I had a female lineolated parakeet that was a persistent egg layer. First I tried to let her keep her eggs and brood them. (If you keep removing the eggs, she will lay more and more.) I also gave her beads about the same size as her own eggs to sit on. She would brood the eggs for a couple of weeks, but then try laying another clutch. The vet tried Lupron injections, which helped for awhile. Of course my bird got supplemental calcium. What finally worked for me was to get a second linnie female to be a companion to the egg layer. It's risky, but it worked in my situation. My little egg-layer stopped laying eggs eventually once she had a female friend. I was lucky that my second female has never laid any eggs.

  • @Shasha8674
    @Shasha8674 3 года назад

Mg not Ca may help muscles. Ca may help the shell. Vets may not be trained to help and may not care, but the birds may live to be 15 years old. I will have to put my female and male in different cages next to each other. Thanks for the video! God bless!

I’m watching this in an effort to understand and heal from grief. I missed red flags that my cocktail was in danger. My husband saw her limping and a friend visiting saw her dilating. It should’ve registered as urgent but I’d had a crazy week with work and was exhausted.. I found my girl dead in the cage this morning. I can’t even begin to tell you the horrific sight it was. Please take this seriously with your female birds. If they lay more than 3 clutches in a year or even a second clutch sooner than 2 months apart. Such sad news of the passing of Rosita now. You lost Rio a few months back and that was terrible also. But I want you to know that you are providing a great service with your informative videos; here is Egg Binding, you also told us of Yolk Peritonitis and Uropygial glands; I had never heard of any of these and I have had budgies since my adolescent years but never knew of why they passed. Rosita was a beauty; I was never sure of who she was in the videos, along with Rosy, Raspberry and Roxy, because when your birds are out in the bird room, I would see a rosy bourke on a perch, on your head, mingling with other birds, etc, so never knew Rosita on sight. Glad you pointed out the importance of diet (give them dark greens) along with darkening towards end of day. Also, calcium; I provide my budgies with a cuttlebone but now realize that they have not really used it in almost 6 months; have to check if I have it positioned correctly. So nice to see Raspberry and Sterling throughout this video (very well behaved) and of course Jack Sparrow at the very end enjoying his perch at the top of the bird room. Keep us updated on your newly adopted powder blue Budgie.

Currently one of my Quaker parrots is going through an egg-bound case as well. The egg is lodged deep inside her and unfortunately, the only two options for me are to put her through a risky and expensive surgery or to feed her some pain medication and wait until she's ready to be euthanized... I think I've just about made up my mind and let her pass on. It hurts me to know that her days are numbered now. She seems fine and energetic right now but it's only a matter of time before she gets sick enough to euthanize her. I wish I could have fixed her diet sooner and let her out of the cage more often to exercise. It might have saved her from all this.

Thank you very much. That was very helpful.
I don't know if she has an egg or not.
My two have been together for 5 years. Someone gave them to me.
They could no longer take care of them.
They said she had never laid an egg.
But I'm not so sure. Both birds looked like they were trying to make a nest.
I've never seen them mate but they show signs of wanting to but act like they don't know how.
Lately her lower abdomen looks somewhat swollen/ puffy.
I really can't afford a vet just for the sake of going to one. They both had a wellness check when I first got them 4 months ago.
They had been kept in their cage for 5 years!!!. Right now I have gotten them to eat millet from my hands. The boy is. Stepping up some and both are doing well at "touch". They finally are coming out and sitting on the perches I put outside of their cage. They have started flying a little.

I have a 15 yr old African grey parrot. I just dealt with the egg bound thing for the first time. My parrot has been struggling to go to the bathroom for a couple of weeks +. Runny, mucousy poo. Everyone everywhere gives the same advice: Take her to an expert. It's an emergency, take her to a vet!! This is what would have been involved had I taken the vet route. $500 to clip the nail, draw blood to rule out any illness. Then an xray, another few hundred $$ dollars. They would see the egg on the xray then want to do emergency surgery, so they would sedate the bird, then remove the egg. Thousands of dollars later, I would have a traumatized sedated bird after paying thousands of dollars for a needless surgury. This is what I did instead. Cooked some organic quinoa, and a little top ramen type noodles, added a blob of coconut oil. She ate it and the next day, she passed the egg. She is doing much better and it didn't cost anything. This might not work with every egg bound parrot but it's a good place to start. I notice the internet won't let anyone post advice anymore unless they have a license. It's dumb. I searched everywhere and found NO practical home remedies for this situation. Lastly, I also got some Lekton brand vitamins. Amazon $15. This really helps bc it has calcium. I notice an immediate improvement in her after adding this to her diet.

Incase anyone is watching this with an eggbound bird and no avain vet there are things you can do to successfully treat some cases of egg binding at home. Before I say more this is NOT a substitute for an avian vet, if you can get to an avain vet go there. Unfortunately if your hen gets eggbound on Friday night, you may not actually get into a vet until Monday and for an eggbound hen Monday is too late. Always try to get to an avain vet, but in the event you can't you can help your bird with some success.
First off oil her up. Virgin olive oil is ideal, but I've used unsented baby oil. If you're dealing with an eggbound hen at home, you've reached the point of desperation and cooking oils or baby oil is all an option. Use what you have. You're gonna need to oil up her vent area and gently into the vent with your little finger. Litteraly just the tip, you're only trying to help the egg glide out a little easier. You're in essence lubing up the hen.
Warmth to the vent and surrounding mussle is needed to relax strained muscles and inflation. Warm (not hot) compresses, hold her over steam. Whatever you can do to get warmth into very tired and inflamed muscles. Once she gets too far into the eggbinding her muscles will become inflamed further making it difficult to pass the egg. You're trying to help her muscles relax a little to further open her vent passage.
Calcium and D3 are essential. If you have indoor birds you should already have this supplement at home. She's gonna need a high dose of this. If you know how to crop feed, do that to get the supplement in, but if you don't then use a syringe to get it in her mouth. Just be very careful if using a syringe TINY droplets at a time, don't aspirate your hen. I have in the past given 0.1ml of water addative calcium and D3 directly to small species hen. That's a LOT. When you consider 10ml to 500ml water. Is the usual dilution rate, twice weekly. Here's the deal, too much calcium is treatable, untreated eggbinding is fatal in a matter of hours. You've already tried every vet in the area. At this point it's a do nothing and lose the bird, do something and have a chance at saving the bird situation.
If you have meloxicam left over from any previous vet visits for the bird (or a cat it's literally the exact same stuff for cats and dogs) give the bird this at the correct dosage for the size of your bird. Its both a pain reliver and anti inflammatory. She'll thank you for it if you have it available.
Keep her in a warm and comfortable hospital cage as shown in this video.
You can as a desperate last option and only if you are absolutely certain the bird won't survive until the vet trip attempt to massage the egg out. This is very dangerous and not to be done unless your bird is looking at the end and you've done everything else and given her some time to pass it. If you break the egg inside the bird, she's done. Do NOT attempt this unless you have called every vet in a hundred mile radius and your bird is completely out of energy and unable to continue herself. There are videos on RUclips on how to do this. It has to be done in a very specific way. Its something vets are trained to do correctly. Again I can't stress enough how much of a last effort this needs to be to untrained bird owners.
It's a shame that avain vets are so hard to find and one that does out of hours emergency trips are like trying to find hens teeth in the dark. No one should ever need to consider home treatment for an eggbound hen. A vet is what's needed, but unfortunately I've met many people who've lost a hen due to out of hours avain vets being so rare.
It's not garunteed you can save your hen, but there is a chance. My last eggbound girl lost use of both legs, was unable to even hold her head up anymore. She wasn't long for the world. She's still terrorising my flock today, because I made a choice to try and do something for her at home. It WAS risky. I could have unalived her in the process, but she was garunteed to be lost if I did nothing.

Hi, provide extra calcium. Provide cuttlebone. You can scare the cuttlebone into her food if she won't touch it. Also provide veggies that provide calcium. You can also get Avian liquid or powered calcium. They can overdose on calcium so be careful.
If she is not feeling well then keep her warm and in a separate hospital/travel cage.

Hi. Sorry this is late. If your bird is having egg laying difficulty she will lay eggs even if she doesn't have a nest box however some birds may lay eggs easier in a nest box. Nest boxes will encourage egg laying so don't leave it in there very long.
She will need to see an avian vet if she cannot lay the egg.
