When people say eat the rich they aren’t talking about the mark Cubans of the world. They are talking to the Elon musks and Jeff bezos. They are talking to the pharmaceutical companies that make medication outrageously overpriced. They are talking to the corporations that overcharge for products but then outsource their work to third world countries because it’s cheaper to pay and allow for poor working conditions. It’s for the politicians who make laws to support themselves rather than the majority. those who don’t have to pay their taxes. It feels as though scarra is coming from a place of fear somewhat like saying “when will I be next to get hate for being rich” the average person won’t hate you for building a successful career and making money from your hard work. Especially if your working honestly ethically and not making it harder for others to live and survive. It’s once you make negative impacts on the overall of society that’s when you get hate. People don’t hate billionaires people hate greed

I think the other thing that is easy to forget, whether you are rich or not, is that "eat the rich" mostly really applies to billionaires and not so much millionaires. It's easy to forget how much a billion is and there is still quite a big gap between a millionaire and billionaire. 1 billion is 1,000 times greater than 1 million. Mark Cuban's estimated worth (according to google) is about $5 billion dollars. Zendaya about $20 million. Put into perspective, Mark Cuban is monetarily worth about 250 Zendayas (if my math is right). Google is telling me that Elon is worth $250 billion (holy heck). So then Elon is monetarily worth i think 50 Mark Cubans or 12500 Zendayas!!! That is wild!!
So for these streamers who maybe are low to mid millionaire status like Zendaya (especially if they get a big deal), eating the rich is not really about them still (even though a lot of people will be confused and think that it is about them). They are kinda just like us but get to live a more physically comfy life. We have to get it in our head that "fuck the rich" is primarily about people who are billionaires who have way more money than they could ever need or even know what to do with, and who overall are keeping that wealth to themselves or a very small specific subset of people. They are human, yes, but a lot of them are so out of touch and full of greed or entitlement and use their wealth to hoard more wealth and work to mostly benefit themselves. Yes there are decently big gaps between poverty and millionaires, even between the middle class and millionaires, but the cost of living is going up and being a millionaire is not worth as much as it used to be. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have a few millions in order to live a way more comfortable life than I do now. But to have billions of dollars?? Billionaires do not have the same monetary struggles as millionaires, I'm pretty sure.
Also kind of a side note: my understanding is that of the rich people on the submarine, only 1 was a billionaire and the other 4 were millionaires. So if we did want to totally lack empathy and apply a "fuck the rich" mindset in that situation, it really only applies to 1/5 of the people on that sub.

Media only reflects what people cares about, and even though I think media has some social responsibility to always make important topics like the struggles of migration more visible, inevitaby people will decide if that's relevant or not, and the sad reality is that people just don't care enough because for many europeans immigrants dying in the mediterranean it's an uncomfortable topic they DECIDE to ignore, that's the core of the problem! I think some nuance was missed on the topic "we hate the rich". I agree with Scarra that we should positively reinforce people to strive to be a millionaire (or wealthy). The problem is often there are laws in place that "punish" or the deter people with fines (money). There's so many arbitrary rules around those fines as well. So for the rich, $500 fine for parking in the wrong spot. It will never hurt you them way it would a poor person. There also seems to be an idea that the in order for the rich, they have to steal money or steal opportunities from others. It goes back to the US vs THEM.

In this particular case, it's about looking at all sides... and the side of the rich was heavily focused on, since you guys are, indeed, rich. When the submarine news broke, the Italian government decided to put a German woman to jail for 20 years. Why? Because she helped bringing refugees to Italian ports safely (most people don't make it out alive because hundreds of people are cramped up inside a boat, floating on the Mediterannean Sea for God knows how long, hoping for a better life in Europe) or otherwise they would have all perished. this is in no way ill intentioned but there is a lot of nuance that was missing on the topic about billionaires and the people on the sub that it was frankly very painful to listen to. On "Eat the Rich"- Even the difference between a Zendaya (net worth- $20 million) and a billionaire is astronomical. You would need 50 Zendayas to get to a billion, and that is simply just ONE billion. You would need 2,000 Zendayas to get to how much Musk spent on Twitter. There is no way someone can accumulate that much wealth in an ethical way, and so billionaires resort to unethical methods of accruing wealth.
For example, there is mass exploitation of the Earth and its natural resources. The Dakota Access Pipeline protests have been going on since 2016. Big energy companies headed by the same billionaires that people are so spiteful towards are directly responsible for the destruction of land, the mass extinction of animals, the exploitation of poor peoples and their labor, and even contribute significantly to the deaths of many.
I get that it can be hard to relate to someone as a streamer sitting comfortably in your chair in the heart of LA. However, someone who is DIRECTLY affected by these massive corporations cannot simply "Stay in their own lane". Their lives are getting destroyed by these billionaires, all for higher and higher profits. Billionaires ACTIVELY hurt the Earth as well as the animals and creatures that inhabit it. The Earth is actively in decline because a few billionaires sitting on the board of a super mega corporation try to increase their profit margins.
"Eat the rich/k1ll the rich" sentiment is so beneficial because it UNITES people who otherwise own NO social or financial power, establishing a common enemy that actively decreases their living conditions. Anti-rich sentiment causes people to democratically hold the rich ACCOUNTABLE to the atrocities that they are committing- take the WGA/SAG strikes for example. A few ultra rich people deciding on whether the people they exploit get healthcare or not. Because of so much political power against the rich, people are unafraid to take action against these billionaires, and fight for their wages, living conditions and the value of their labor. It is the exact same sentiment as "not seeing race"- NOT paying attention to it is in itself contributing to the decline of lives and the environment. I know ya'll don't really do politics, but I think a lot of people (most everyone in the comments LOL) would appreciate having someone with an educated, nuanced and intelligent opinion on issues such as these to come on and talk about them, such as Hasan.
Anti-billionaire sentiment is so strong right now not because it is trendy, but because billionaires have managed to cause SO MUCH harm that people cannot HELP but take notice. Yes, human life is valuable. But if someone came to my town, poisoned our water supply, cut down the forests that was revered by my culture, and paid me 8 dollars an hour to work at a sweatshop that was the only available source of income for a 50-mile radius, why would I not rejoice at their demise?

I think scarra even points out why he finds it so weird, he only kinda defends billionaires because he thinks one day his bracket will be the target. I don’t think millionaires will ever be the target, but like logistically you could never say that somebody works a billion times more than somebody else, they are making that profit because they are thriving off the people who are underpaid and overworked. Im not defending the jokes about ppl dying in the submarine but there is a disconnect from millionaire streamers and ppl who literally cannot pull themselves out of poverty because the billionaires keep spreading that gap. Like even at the base level where minimum living wage is nowhere near what you need to survive in most places. No hate to scarra, loved the pod but it always be hard for a person in your financial status (I also don’t know how well off their families were when growing up) to relate to the majority of ppl who don’t have the money to deal with the decisions that the rich make

I think that all the animosity that people had about the titanic that you all don’t feel is that people are struggling so hard right now just to survive. With inflation and greedflation from the companies that are making billions of dollars plus regular folk are hurting. So in your position you aren’t really feeling it too much but for people making 30k and haven’t gotten a raise since the pandemic started and now everything is going up in price we are all angry because the source of our problems is greed from the ultra rich. They don’t wanna pay their workers more but charge people more money for basic necessities and are making record profits of billions while everyone else is struggling to survive. And the more money you make the less you actually feel it which is why y’all have more empathy and compassion because you don’t feel what 70% of the population feels because you are in a higher class. Which is what also makes your feel nervous because you aren’t far away from being on the chopping block of hate of things get worse and then you all go back to being like the rest of us when stocks drop and people can’t afford to sub etc. 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Yes, Scarra, you are out of touch.
Yes, you are following the same fearmongering on millionaires to billionaires as some people do with tax brackets aimed at the top 5% to everyone else.
I understand you were looking at it through the lens of some rich people dying, but the majority of people in that case aren't celebrating the deaths, just don't care. On the internet, there are SO many other things that are more deserving of empathy from most angles. Why spend that limited emotional energy on people who you will never find relatable, doing something that they know is risky.

while i think the whole "kill the billionaires" movement is over the line, i think people that arent mad at billionaires have never done the quick math to know how much money they actually make. its not something you do ethically.
    An example:
Lets say you are 50 years old and just made your very first billion. you started working at 20 years old, so you have been working for 30 years.
That would mean you, on average, made 641.025,61$ every week. A house every week, for 30 years.
And if you are jeff bezos, are 59 years old and have like 200 Billion dollars, if we assume you started working at 20 aswell, that means you made 14 million dollars every DAY!
i dont want them to die, but im not gonna be sad if they do. especially with the submarine story.. like, last month, a refugee ship sank and 78 people drowned. i bet most people reading this havent even heard of that. People fleeing their country in hopes of safety died and no one gave a fuck... but some rich folk voluntarily cram into a submarine and its on every news show for days with fuckin oxygen timers on it.

Billionaires can solve problems from poverty to reversing the use of fossil fuel but they choose not to and continue to profit off of people's lives and the world's resources without a scratch. Billionaires don't even get taxed the way they should be. This whole "eat the rich" thing is more than just hate and is a part of a bigger movement for equality, wealth redistribution and stopping of over-exploitation of people and planet. It was kinda sad that they played it down to people hate billionaires because they make more money than actually the rest of the world. Regardless, I still love them and I wish they would try and look more into it :)

It's so frustrating to continuously hear people tell us how we should feel. They missed a lot of the intricacies of being poor in a society where people are touting their wealth in whatever manner they might. But OUR response to people acting foolish and haphazardly doing dangerous things is NOT for you (a fairly wealthy guy, Scarra) to critique. It was tragic, yes, but it symbolized so much more for the working class. For those who are living paycheck to paycheck only for more welathy people to be like "Shame on you" when in reality they didn't give a fuck about the HUNDREDS of refugees who lost lives trying to find asylum. There are countless examples of how "policing how the poor act" is just another way to maintain a hierarchy inherent to our society. Do better, read more, listen to our comments. This was a disappointing podcast to listen to.

Was not a fan of the talk about the rich here. Understanding that big corporations and the impact it has overall on the planet is what makes me dislike "the rich." Thats not to discount people like Bill Gates and others who use their money to benefit others/the planet. The fact that the rich make millions but this is based off of low wages that people cannot live off of. I think if the Titan was going down for scientific research rather some general adventure, I'd be more empathetic. But if they knew that was the risk going down there and despite warnings of the conditions of the ship, still went, then thats their call.

I dont think its that weird people think you have to exploit people to become a billionaire. You could legit have a job that pays 100$ an hour, work 50 hours a week, every week, every month every year, and it would take you 4167 years to make a single billion... Theres people out there with MULTIPLE BILLIONS. So forgive us for thinking they are bad people. You simply cannot make that much money "working hard"
