    The Top Five Moose: Part Three. This is it folks! Good morning, you’ve watched the first two parts of Libby’s Top Five Bulls. Numbers five through two were featured in the first two parts. Now it’s time for her favorite. Drum roll please.
    Once again we’ll let Libby’s narration tell her story and as you will see, this video is very special to her and maybe to some of you as well.
    I am quite far behind in my own top five video, it’s been super busy since we got home from Alaska, but I will get to it soon and share it with pride once I finish it.
    It’d be great if some of you would really take these clips in, maybe watch them a couple times. Every post is meaningful to us, but these past three videos have been quite a bit more special to share.
    Thanks for watching our channel, we are the husband/wife team of Rick and Libby Libbey, (Libby squared), New Hampshire wildlife photographers (and part time Alaska.) It is our passion to document wildlife of any kind, but moose are definitely at the top. In New Hampshire we spend a lot of our spring/summer hours in kayaks photographing loons and moose in the waters of New Hampshire. And hike many miles in Alaska seeking all manner of wildlife in the fall.

      Moosehead Lake- I saw 7 moose in 3 days here. Stay at Black Bear Cabins in Rockwood (cheap and great!) and head toward a small unincorporated town called Taunton and Raynham Academy Grant then stay put by the bogs for a while. You can also check out Rangeley Lakes region. Also, Jackman Maine, 100 Mile Woods and Kojadko region. Be careful with a regular car here though- too many dirt roads to count. The pavement ends in Kojadko. Sorry to be nosy but I love Maine and moose so just wanted to help :)

And I know better than to drive a car on many of those roads...we have a truck. Gotta have more clearance than a car offers. Moose love bogs, and if you can get a kayak into an area they frequent, you've got a good chance of hanging with one as it eats. Thanks again for all the great info!

    • @MooseManNaturePhotos

      Yes, there's a reason they don't salt the roads there for ice treatment; because it would bring the moose in, inviting car strikes. They tend to hang out in the salt barns here in the northeast for their sodium fix. Or lick it off the cars. Parked! that is!! Cool story, thanks for the share!

    This is great stuff! With domestic dairy goats, the eau de bouc plays a critical role in bringing the does into estrus. Since most goatkeepers do not own a buck, we use a "buck jar"(a rag rubbed on the head and neck of a rutting buck, kept in a jar) for an anestrous doe to smell; this will bring her into heat! Like deer, goats have a seasonal rut. It is a matriarchal society. I LOVED your moose cows vying for the heavenly peed-in pit! (I`ve smelled them!)
    Willi B. in Canada.

    • @MooseManNaturePhotos
      @MooseManNaturePhotos  Год назад +2

      How very interesting, Willi B! I never knew that about goats. But it sure makes everything in that world make sense, literally, in that it's the sense of smell that triggers estrus. The cow moose will kick a bull away from his pit and drench themselves in the perfume (nothing like the smell of burnt rubber with Pine Sol in the morning!) and I have always suspected that not only keeps the cows close to the source (bull) but also must bring them into estrus. Thanks for that, I've asked biologists and they kind of shrug, not sure. It sure is a fun thing to watch though! Thanks so much for the comment and for joining us!

      @@MooseManNaturePhotos Dear Libby, My pleasure! I am a lifelong farmer and naturalist, also a student of deer. That`s funny, I never thought moose wallows smelled like burnt rubber and "Pine sol", but then, our noses are all wired somewhat differently. I can hunt using my nose. You know how women who live together will synchronise their cycles? Smell is far too underrated in our society. To my mind, good natural smells are part of what makes for quality of life. WHEEEEEEEEE! (Ms.) Willi B. in Canada

    It's fascinating. In Québec, we're studying their comportement in rut pit with trail cam. Most of the Quebec, it's closed area, we have alot of forest, so the comportement may change from what you can observe on your side. In Quebec with a moderate density of moose, we can observe 2 primes bull sharing cow with each other, it's very rare that we see a harem with 5-6 cows and with 1 prime bull, like Grumpy in your video. We explain that by the large number of cow, so they tolerate each other because they're not able to mate all of them. Keep up the good work, because there is alot of sexual behavior similar to Quebec.

    • @MooseManNaturePhotos
      @MooseManNaturePhotos  Год назад +2

      Thank you and your observations are spot on. Mostly moose don't harem. We only know them to do that in AK due to their numbers, animals seem to cluster in small satellite groups during the rut. here, in the Northeast, the bulls have to travel to find a mate and once they do, they stick by her but they don't have the population for such harems. We have never seen dominant bulls share a cow, but the cows will move between bull territories (studies done by Vic Van Ballenburghe in Denali range, AK prove this out. Thanks very much for the comment. We learn something every rut season, that's for sure!

      Grumpy and another equally large bull were both killed in a fight. Not a lock up, they were killed when their battle occurred in a very dense and tightly treed area where they got tripped up and wedged in the trees, the one bull falling on top of Grumpy. Both broke their necks, it is believed. Sad and tragic and very unusual.

      It's probably just a conspiricy a cover up of his real death a broken neck by falling over or getting killed by a massive grizzly. This woman would clearly want to cover up the truth. A death by a ferocious bear.

      @@1222-u5r This is an absurd comment. You weren't there. You didn't see what happened. Read the article in Outdoor Life if you don't believe us. I really don't appreciate you basically calling me/us a liar here. If there had been death by a bear I would have SAID SO!!! I strongly suggest that next time, before you comment like this, check the FACTS.

    I have only seen moose once in my life... In the Jemez in NM a few years agony (I live just outside). It was apparently a very rare sighting this far south and ever since, I've been obsessed with moose! Your videos are beautiful, thank you so much for sharing! 💖

      Thank you for your lovely comment, Re. We are honored to have our photos used as reference to your artistic talents. If it is ever appropriate to do so, all we ask is credit for the reference photo in name. Now, go create! We would love to see what you come up with! And...wow! That's a VERY unusual sighting down there in NM!!! I would have said it would be more likely to see a unicorn than a moose there. How cool that you got to see it! And thank you for the kind words. We are happy to share what we learn from and with these amazing animals. It's all about resecting their space. Bears, wolves, moose, loons, matters not. They all just want to be left alone. Grumpy was the one who really let us in and showed us the ropes of the rut. Thank you for being here with us!

    Just thought I would let hunters berry pickers trappers know but an older trapper close to our family believes he saw a grizzly polar bear hybread way up north in Ontario Canada closer to James bay low lands in ring of fire area and we don't have grizzly bears in Ontario as far as THE MNR says but they say polar bears are coming more South every year and I've heard that there has been some mateing between the two anyways he knows his bears animals it was not a black bear it was bigger and had more white and brown plus the claws were long said it looked scary he is always armed but swears it was this past fall he doesn't believe in cell phones so taking his word and has no reason to lie but they said it was happening and said it would be the scariest bear alive with grizzly and polar bear just a scary thought I mean a big black bear could do same thing with polar bear anyways be safe just shows ice is later and later every year now and starts pushing things that should be way up north coming closer South for food there was already a documentary and it showed grizzly bears and polar bears feeding together on a dead whale crazy people that don't believe in global warming if it isn't that it's something causing weather all over the world to change but if there is one hybread bear has to be more ok just want anyone going into Bush to whatch there back and be prepared he had said he noticed a few black bears in December that were still not dened up and said means winter bear with one thing on mind food whatch your dogs kids be safe by for now

      We heard this also. And it's very true that warming is pushing animals beyond their usual bounds and ranges. Moose are seeking northern territories because they can't handle heat. The winter ticks are killing them here in new England because the winters aren't harsh enough to kill the ticks that don't find a host. It is always wise to watch one's back in the bush. There are hungry apex predators about and cover is an issue in the thick growth. Good luck out there, all. Stay safe!
