I wouldn’t say Clark was ever afraid of Darkseid. He was afraid of embracing his destiny and letting go of his life in Smallville. It’s when he realised he could be Superman and still hold on to his Smallville roots that he was finally able to overcome his fear.

I believe if anything, Covid was more of a preview. At least with Covid, we could still buy food and water, and go places. When the time of the real Mark and the rise of the antichrist gets here, which it will happen. It’s just a matter of time. We won’t be able to do anything without receiving the mark.
