Cocke County School has a amazing programs for their students. I was really impressed. Their equipment is top notch too. I wish more states offered programs like this. What a honor for Randy to be part of their program now. Randy seems to enjoy teaching and these boys seem willing to learn from him. Looking forward to see the product these boys produce this summer. I was a mentor for high school students in Liverpool , UK and some of the students were really dealing with some issues and barriers. My job was to break down those barriers and give them hope and a future...and for them to recognize their potential. I took those students to all sorts of venues and placements. WHAT YOU ARE DOING IS FANTASTIC. YOU WILL REALLY LIFT MORAL, HOPE, EXCITEMENT FOR THEIR FUTURE. You have the right attitude , you have to be grounded and also have a sense of humour but getting them to where they need to get going and giving them hope . Superb Randy and great Amanda xxx

As far as any of my interns.... they were never fetching me coffee or just sweeping.... I had them on job sites, taking them to markets in several states, taking them to industry events etc.... they discovered the importance of contracts, marketing, a good accountant, business plans etc. I also made a point of attending their graduations.
Thats a really cool campus... great curriculum... I am really impressed!

I loved drawing houses and blueprint style drawings from an early age. When I was in high school I found we had architecture classes and I was so excited! I was very shy but I mustered my courage and I went to see the teacher. He asked how I was in math, I told him math was my worst subject 😣 He gave me a scowl and said forget this class then, you'll never make it! 😮 I was heartbroken and never went after my dreams.😢 Teachers definitely can have a positive or negative effect on a student. I'm so happy ITH is supporting the next generation of young people! Bravoooo! 👏👏👏

I love you are offering internships for these kids! Real life experience cannot be beat. I have developed a few programs for clients when I was working. I find a "Learning Agreement" works well. The business should list in writing their expectations for interns like items to learn, milestones to reach, etc and the interns should write what they think they want to get out of the program. They may match, they may be miles apart. Every week take 5 minutes go over what is accomplished with each intern and if their expectations have changed. You and they will see their growth and developing interests and it is a great document for the school. The architect group should be interesting for their expectations.

This is what high schools should be teaching. They should have classes in plumbing, building, bricklaying, welding, truck driver etc. If not an advanced curriculum then classes that get students ready for a trade school. More and more people go to college and just accumulate student debt without having any clear cut idea for a job. Women are quite capable of being a welder or a truck driver. All of these jobs pay very good money.

That is great that these students are coming on and getting some hands-on experience in learning to build houses. And getting credit, which would be great. I took woodshop my last semester of my last year of high school, and I enjoyed it. They also had metal work as well. Loved working with wood, and made a footstool, which I still have. I started making plans for a bookcase, but the semester ended. I did take a woodworking class my first quarter at my college and made a spice rack. If I had to it over, I would have wanted to get into wood & metal work sooner. I wish the best for these students; they will be making houses and maybe their own tiny house. It seems more public schools are having students learn these construction skills which is great.
I am surprised that graduation is already happening in the public schools. I reside in Texas and the schools don't end Spring Semester till like the 26th of May for the public schools. Colleges and Universities vary.
Did they make those mailboxes in their machine shop? That is awesome, another skill, making mailboxes.

    Hey Randy....
You were talkin' about sheds y'day. Maybe it would be good to have your students begin their training building sheds. Seems like that would be a good place to start into carpentry.
About the school....the emphasis seems to be vocational. They're teaching these kids skills that make them employable immediately after graduation. I have two college degrees but I think college is overrated. What these kids are getting is a practical education.

    • @chezmoi42
      @chezmoi42 2 года назад

That's a good idea, making the sheds part of their experience.
I agree that vocational and technical training is essential for the students who are not college bound, but even for them, we can't forget the importance of a fully rounded HS education as well. On top of practical subjects like math and the sciences, they need a good grounding in history and philosophy, literature and language arts, social studies and civics (more now than ever!), as well as art and music. Just as those on the academic course need at least a minimum of practical instruction in how to deal efficiently with running and maintaining their own households.

    Hello there❤️
This is a question for your next Q&A…
I would like to move to your community and plan to schedule A formal meeting to-discuss (with hopefully Randy:)
    My question is,
Do you background check new homeowners
for people that might have a violent or sex offender record?
I do not wish to move to a community as a single white female knowing there's a convicted sexual or violent Predator nearby.
I think this is an important question for all single women, maybe it's because I have survived such a brutal encounter and I do not wish to go through that again
You have a lovely community and that is exactly what I'm looking for, I come from Colorado and people do not want to get to know their neighbors, they drive in to their garage close the door and to be honest I don't know any of my neighbors and I've lived here five years! That's pretty sad😳🤦🏼‍♀️
…because I live behind a school, no predators or violent convicted felon's are allowed within a certain amount of feet to where I live so I feel a little bit more comfortable and the police station is blocks away.
I know you get a lot of questions but, I truly hope you answer mine.
I sometimes a miss your live Q&A's ~maybe someone could answer this in writing I would so appreciate it☺️
    God bless
    Maria

Now young man I think you have fallen into a very good crowd I think if you stay with the tiny house community I think you will always have a job and a place to live I'm not saying don't further your education if you get the opportunity to college you go but it seems like you have a good crowd backing you when you're young things can get a bit tempting so try to stay away from that stay on track and stay with the tiny house community you're in a good spot

I think this pandemic has taught people the importance of multiple streams of income, unfortunately having a job doesn't mean security rather having different investments is the real deal.
