Superb car... These are SERIOUSLY underrated cars. Launched in 1969 and designed by the late Sir Alex Issigonis.. The Austin Maxi was a huge success throughout the 1970s. By 1980 the design was starting to look a bit dated, So British Leyland gave the car a slight refresh "On the cheap" with new black bumpers and a new grill with the blue badge in the center. Just to buy the car a bit more time. On Wednesday 8th July 1981 the very last Austin Maxi rolled down the production line and is now in the British Motor Museum for future generations to see. I have seen the car it is on the registration plate LOV 476 X she is a stunner. Thank you for this video...
Had a J reg back in the day. Probably of all the cars I've owned, it was my favourite. Reliable, supremely comfortable, and a great shagging wagon. Those fold flat rear seats have never been equalled.
My Dad had 2 Maxi’s. I used to borrow them when it rained as I had a driving license but rode a motorcycle. Great cars but used to eat gearboxes. Lovely to see the dashboard again😎
I had three Maxi's in my time and would still be driving them today, if my work as a field service engineer didn't mean company car's. Glad to see a Maxi still around, they were a great practical car, and should have done far better in sales than they did.
My dad had one of these 1972, got a promotion so moved up to a morris 1800, then got another promotion so bought a jaguar xj6 3.4. In 1976. And the engine blew 😮
Brilliant video.Loved the acceleration passed the VW Tourag. Hee hee. Yours looks really solid . The Maxi was my first car. It handled. It understeered a lot but you just aimed for a point inside the apex of a bend. My 18 year old mind enabled me to travel at 80 mph down single track Devon lanes that I’d be hard pressed to do 40 mph in any car now.
Has a 1500 maxi loved it to bits sure miss it but don’t tell that clarkson he ran most leyland down and lots cancelled their orders because of his reviews
Is this a 1970 model or later? The Maxi was launched with the 1500 engine in 1969, and the early cars had the bad cable gearchange and Austin letters on the bonnet. By late 1970 there was a facelift now with the 1750 engine choice and rod gearchange. By 1979 the 1500 was dropped and in 1980 updated to the Maxi 2 with more plastic and often in brighter colours.
How does it drive? My dad had 3 of these before going over to Mazda because we couldn’t buy them anymore in Sweden. I don’t remember much of it, but he had two red ones then a beige .

Back in the 70s, My brother and a friend put a 1750 Maxi engine into a Mini.
Spent many hours of my childhood in a Maxi, frequently on the M25. Lovely old cars. :)
Spent hundreds of hours behind the wheel of a Maxi, both a 1500 and a 1750.
A great car.

A very popular car amongst welders.

My dad had a Wolseley 18/85s in the 70's. BRO608K. Best thing I've ever ridden in (apart from a Mazda 3 Takuya).
Austin Maxi, great car! I’m glad you have one!

Thanks, but I think BL was long gone before Clarkson came on the scene ….
@@3500P5 ooops I meant the mg rover group up to 2005 top gear started in 1988 with clarkson
Look how stable it is ,would have been nice with 2200 under the bonnet ?

This is a November 1970 car.
Brilliant car, 5 gears, fantastic suspension, great towing. Disgrace Austin, Leyland, Mg All shafted.
They deliberately slowed so you would overtake 🤣 checking out the rear

But that gearbox!
Great love it 😊
I can only dream of going on the M25
I would have one again..
My best friend had a maxi. He said it was totally gutless and the worst car he ever owned!!!!
