can you use external hdd on it?
Yes via a USB C port. There is also a Micro SD card slot which I put in a 512FB Micro SD.
"laptop replacement" is a bit of a stretch.

Actually if you use it you'll find it's very fast. Nowadays my student use it instead of laptop so definitely laptop replaced.
