- Grow vegetables and fruit indoors in the UK/ grow veg at home. If you fancy growing some fruit & veg at home but are short on materials - here's what you can do to get your seeds started.
* Please note that some seeds from mass-produced shop-bought varieties of fruit and vegetables are hybrids so they're not designed to be regrown and they may be sterile which means they will not grow. If you are using seeds from shop bought produce look out for heritage varieties as these will give you a better crop.*

This video was recorded at the beginning of lockdown in the UK so the challenge was to be resourceful when we had little access to seeds or equipment. It's worth noting that not all seeds from shop-bought produce are designed to be regrown - mass-produced varieties can be sterile but heritage varieties can grow well - we had a bumper crop from our shop-bought heritage tomatoes grown on our windowsill. However, in an ideal world, it is worth sourcing the best seeds as they will likely be more resistant to disease and give you a better crop.
In a non-ideal world - be experimental, be resourceful and have fun - and any vegetables or fruit that you grow will be a bonus 😀

You can also dip cuttings in cinnamon to make them root quicker

Love the suggestions for containers to use! I didn't have a watering can either so I looked up how to DYI one: I used a water bottle and poked holes into the bottle cap with a pushpin--it works pretty good! I've never grown anything before so I'm super excited to try it now, thanks for making this video!

It even works with dirt from outside, just remove the top layer (a couple of inches) and take the soil below

Because many vegetables are hybrids, seeds from them may not germinate . You can grow vegetables from cut ends of lettuce, carrots, and green onions sprout in glass of water.

I am loath to leave comments that aren't completely positive, but, in this case, it would be nice if the title were something different. While the full title is technically correct, I saw "how to grow vegetables indoors without any equipment", and took the bait to click on it instead of moving on to the next choice which would have actually taught me something; anyone who has ever opened a packet of seeds knows how to do this. If the aim is to get absolute beginners to progress on to watching later videos, perhaps you would consider changing the title to something like, "How to start Seedlings - Part 1 of Grow Your Vegetables Indoors With No Equipment Series".

Any thoughts about lighting? We don’t have a wide window sill and the indirect light that enters from outside the window is shade- lighting. Not sunny.

I am concerned about doing it wrong and eating bad possibly toxic food or having my apartment invested with pests. Any tips?
You can't get toxic foods unless your soil is already dirty. And there are organic sprays to wards your plants of pests, but most importantly is to not overwater your plants. Too much water attracts gnats.

It's a less formal alternative to Good Bye - I thought it was widely used in the US as well though?

Only in real life and actually not that often, but in the US on youtube and stuff people tend to end with a catch phrase, but in England you guys actually seem to say goodbye. There is also a stigma to "goodbye" in the US and how goodbye is forever, so "later" and "see ya", or just "by" etc. are more common.

It depends on the variety - it can be as little as ten weeks or as many as sixteen 😀
