    One fun thing to notice. Both Saruman and Gandalf use black powder. Yet where Saruman used it as a weapon of war and death, Gandalf was shown making them into fireworks for cheer and merriment. Great subtle characterization

    The way Gandalf and the Balrog got to the top of the mountain is that the Dwarves had long ago built a very long and winding staircase that went from the deepest cavern to the very top of the highest peak where there was a door that opened onto the mountain top. After they fell into the water the fire of the beast was extinguished and it became a thing of slime that then tried to flee from Gandalf by climbing the endless stair but Gandalf pursued it while continuing to strike it with his sword. After a couple of days they finally reached the summit and and when they emerged into the cold air of the mountain it re-ignited the flames of the Balrog and they began fighting again and that's where we see the story from in the movie.
    Gandalf was then lying on the Mountain top in a state of near death, with his hair and clothes all burned off of him, when the great Eagle that rescued him before sees him and swoops down and rescues him and carries him back to the Elves forest kingdom where the Fellowship had rested before. There the elves heal Gandalf and make new robes and staff for him and he becomes Gandalf the White.

Eru Illuvatar sent him back because of his loyalty and his mission was not finished, so he was resurrected and allowed to use more of his power, and take the position of Saruman among the Istari. Gwaihir brought him to Lothlorien where Galadriel gave him his new clothes and staff, but did not need to heal him, because Eru had already done it.

    One thing that should be noted is that the ring isn't just power, but representative of sin itself. Like sin, it is tempting, working on the sense of selfishness and pride to lure people into serving it. Giving in taints your soul scaring you and making you feel ever more despairing. Such despair is what has consumed Gollum. He despairs in himself, only finding meaning in the empty feeling that selfishness from the Ring provides. The Ring's power can only be denied by acts of forgiveness and mercy. It is for that reason that Frodo is the best to carry it. He is a disciplined, merciful, and forgiving Hobbit, which makes the Ring's job difficult.

      Look for a Ted-Ed episode on "Plato's Ring" - besides what else Tolkien added to it for the story, I'm pretty sure the one ring is very much a reference to Plato. In a nutshell, Plato debated with another philosopher whether morality was inherent to a person or enforced by external law and the fear of being caught in an immoral act. Plato wondered if someone had a ring that could turn them invisible and let them get away with whatever they wanted, would they still be able to stay a moral person? I always wondered why of all things the ring grants invisibility and the idea that it's a moral test seems to be a perfect answer to the question.

He's got birds and beasts spying for him, and he's as old as Gandalf, and knows all about Helm's Deep. The things Wormtongue says are exposition for the audience. 25:04 The dead elves and people are some of the ones who died in the great war Galadriel tells in the prologue of the first movie.
    38:50 Entwives lived at the other side of the great river they sail in first movie. They had gardens there because they preferred that to forests, but in the war against Sauron, he burnt and destroyed all those lands to delay the advance of the allies. Desolation was so huge that almost nothing could grow in those lands again (they are now known as the Brown Lands). No one knows what happened to the Entwives, if they fled, were killed or were taken to work as slaves in the lands of Mordor.

    Here is the translation for Eowyn's Lament. Tolkien was a lover of languages and was the kind of professor who would openly recite Old Saxon poetry from heart to his class. In fact, the Rohirrim are based on the idea that the Anglo-Saxons defeat the Normans at Hastings (thus preserving their language and customs) and then developed a horse culture.

    song of the Ents
    Ent:
    When spring unfolds the beechen-leaf and sap is in the bough,
    When light is on the wild-wood stream, and wind is on the brow,
    When stride is long, and breath is deep, and keen the mountain air,
    Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is fair!
    Entwife:
    When Spring is come to garth and field, and corn is in the blade,
    When blossom like a shining snow is on the orchard laid,
    When sun and shower upon the earth with fragrance fill the air,
    I'll linger here, and will not come, because my land is fair!
    Ent:
    When Summer lies upon the world, and in a noon of gold
    Beneath the roof of sleeping leaves the dreams of trees unfold,
    When woodland halls are green and cool, and wind is in the West,
    Come back to me! Come back to me, and say my land is best!
    Entwife:
    When Summer warms the hanging fruit and burns the berry brown;
    When straw is gold, and ear is white, and harvest comes to town;
    When honey spills, and apple swells, though wind be in the West,
    I'll linger here beneath the Sun, because my land is best!
    Ent:
    When Winter comes, the winter wild that hill and wood shall slay;
    When trees shall fall and starless night devour the sunless day;
    When wind is in the deadly East, then in the bitter rain
    I'll look for thee, and call to thee; I'll come to thee again!
    Entwife:
    When Winter comes, and singing ends; when darkness falls at last;
    When broken is the barren bough, and light and labour past;
    I'll look for thee, and wait for thee, until we meet again:
    Together we will take the road beneath the bitter rain!
    Both:
    Together we will take the road that leads into the West,
    And far away will find a land where both our hearts may rest.

    As always, Hella and Chi, you two see things in movies that many other reactors do not. It's part of what makes you both so much fun to watch. ♥
    One important thing to remember about The Lord of the Rings is that every character has a purpose. Even after we may think they're gone, they come back to do what they are meant to do, whether good or bad. Grima Wormtongue's story hasn't ended ye and Shmeagol/Gollum will help Frodo make his hardest decision. Eowyn, King Theoden's daughter has a very pivotal part to play as well as Treebeard and many more of the Ents. Both Eowyn and Treebeard have two of my favourite parts of the books and movies.
    Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest of the 20th Century stories in that the main characters all learn and grow and become better versions of who they begin the story as.

      Adapting Tolkien's book to movie form was especially hard for T2T, since it doesn't have a proper beginning or end. As a result, the script writers had to make more changes to Tolkien's story than either of the other two movies. Much of the middle third of the movie was invented by the script writers. In particular, the Battle of Helm's Deep was supposedly modeled on the movie "Zulu," where a small force of British soldiers oppose an enormous army of Zulu warriors. Peter Jackson was very fond of this movie and used it as an outline for his battle.

    1.Frodo "dream" was a vision. This was really happening but Frodo saw these events through his "dream" while he slept.
    2. Saruman forces on his tower destroy forest for their "industry". This is because they need fire for their furnaces with which they forge iron and do all sorts of other things. It's the start of an industry. First industry in the world. 😉But it's also an element of Tolkien's warning about industry (because Tolkien was more or less against industrialization and destruction of nature for the sake of steel).
    3. Smeagol's dark side is the spirit/voice of the ring.
    4.Smeagol or Smeagle is a previous ring holder from whom Bilbo took a ring.
    So girls, maybe it's good if you have time to read original Tolkien books about "Lord of the Rings", "Hobbit".
    If you have the opportunity, get "Unfinished Tales" or/and The Silmarillion. These are Tolkien's work and they are related to Norse mythology itself. ☺
    But still your reaction was good and interesting to watch. Fun to watch.

    so the thing with the Balrog vs Gandalf:
    they are fairly evenly matched, both being Maia. there are various estimates for how far down they fell, from 2.5 miles to 15 miles. The truth is we don't know for sure. What we do know is that the balrog was familiar enough with the depths of the earth under moria to find his way back out. Gandalf pursued him vigorously, partly because of the danger the balrog poses to anyone he deems an enemy and partly to find his way out of the labyrinthian network of caves and tunnels. Gandalf ended up fighting with the Balrog for 10 days before finally overcoming him.
