I can still hear and see young Clive. I love Barker. It started with a glimpse of pinhead (I was born in 1987) as a little girl. Then when I listened to him narrarate Hell Bound Heart...
Oh shit- I've just been listening to that audiobook. This video is the first time I've heard Clive Barker speak, and his voice instantly reminded me of the cenobite voices from the audiobook lol. Makes sense
@@AcguarnicaYES!! It does! I also think it did a much better job at elaborating the reason why someone would seek out the cenobites, meaning, what the pleasure given. It does a better job at also elaborating the heart of the individual who would seek out the cenobites.
Yes! I LOVE Clive's reading of The Hellbound Heart. His voice and accent are highly distinctive. He also doesn't sound like a Liverpudlian. There's something otherworldly strange about his voice and narration. Coupled with his written word, it's magic!
Abarat was the first novel I read from Clive barker and it’s really well written and imaginative, especially considering what type of movie I knew him for before I read it.
His imagination is awesome haven’t read loads of his books , of course seen Hellraiser , Nightbreed and Bernard Rose adaptation of candy man .... read Hellbound Heart , Cabal Weavewold . But have massive soft spot for Barker to me he really epitomises an artist as I understand them . He has most definitely created worlds. Think I am going to head off to Amazon and get me some Barker !!!!
A living genuis....right in front of us....and yet we see talent-free zones like Kardashian all over the media, and the man in the street (even in UK) has never heard of Barker....can someone please explain that to me???
Stupidity or, acting stupid seems to be a way for a no talent, no sense of humor idiot to get a cheap laugh these days. I blame Jade Goody on Big Brother (What planet is China on? Jade: Mars?) where it all started to take off in a big way. Everyone was like "ahh Jade said Mars. Ahh, so cute". Now the idiots have taken over the asylum. Fuck 'em. Soulless people.
It's simple: you are talking about them. Fame is a mindless resource. As long as you can get people talk about you, for any reason, by any means, it is enough. Attention has no notion of ”deserving”. Sometimes a well-timed fart is more effective. And once you captured attention - no matter the form - other people want to buy it and get attention onto their shit to sell it.
Stephen King, Clive Barker, J.R.R Tolkien, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, J.K Rowling and so on... all of them in my favourite authors. I look up to those people. Now especially Barker and Tolkien

I've watched a few interviews with Clive Barker now (both recent and old), and I have to ask: what accent is this?? I know he's from Liverpool, but it doesn't sound like any type of Liverpudlian I've ever heard...
He seems to have picked up an American accent. His voice is raspy now due to throat surgery and I think that makes it a little hard to place but it's essentially an LA, Hollywood accent.
'ur'. It's a German word, meaning the original or first. To my understanding, he pronounced it correctly too. I know this as the first Audi quattro (launched 1980) is named ur-quattro, to distinguish it from later models that had quattro 4wd.

It was cigars, I believe. He had had surgery for throat polyps at one point. Such a pity; he had a good voice when he was in his twenties but that's long gone.
that was so awesome, i'd like to read them but if they're making movies what's the point, sure i'll miss powerful descriptions and departures to places i can't see otherwise but i have limited time on earth, i write my own fantastic places
It's fascinating how Mr. Barker has changed over the years, especially when you watch one interview from 1987, then one from 1998, then 2005, then later. A few things have taken their tolls and their affects on the man, some bad and some good. You can tell at one point that he took a distinct interest in some kind of physical fitness, like lifting weights. Some things he couldn't help, like the ravages of poor health. And of course his voice changed dramatically, becoming hoarse and weak, for good. Apparently he'd had surgery for polyps. I've seen footage of Clive at horror or scifi conventions from a couple of years ago and he looks almost frail, and ten years older than his true age. I sincerely hope he is doing well. He seems like such a genuine, sincere person in interviews.
So this is 2002 and his voice was already noticeably raspy at this point. It obviously got much worse, but it's interesting to pin point when it really started. I'm assuming in the late 90's?
FractalBolt he's had surgery to get it fixed,it was actually a series of polyps that had grown in his throat over time from smoking cigars I think,it wasn't cancer,I know that much
@@eduardo_corrochio, I actually KNOW the guy. I grew up 4 houses from where he lived in Liverpool. That does nothing to answer why his voice 'which was normal' changed to sound like this.... Nor does it account for why in an 18 month period he went from having a deep scouse accent to an American one. .....And by the way, I also like the guy, but it's a valid question!
@@VanDamage7908 Wish I had the answers for you. Accents are interesting. I was raised in Long Island, New York; in high school (during a summer break) I got to spend two weeks at an art university in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with several other students my age for a special program, and most of those kids were from the South ... Alabama or Georgia or Texas. By the time I came back home to Long Island I had acquired a hint of an accent. My friends and family found it more than a little amusing. 😄
