I'm glad to see they preserved some of these old R1-9's and they run them occasionally. I hope to catch one one of these days. I haven't been on an R1 since the late 60's/early 70's. I used to ride these often back in the day. good to know that not everything went to the scrapyard.
Thanks for posting these great videos. I lived in NYC 20 years ago before moving upstate. I never realized how much I missed riding the subways. Never thought I was a rail fan but I guess I am.
Now with RUclips, we can stop missing all of the good stuff!
Great video. Great route. Get the flavor of the City, so to speak.
In the age of Covid 19 & being trapped in the house it was great to see a video with all these people close together and hear all the friendly banter on the train. It seems like ages ago now. All my old hoods look great and this was amazing on my giant TV screen! Williamsburg Bridge is holding up well!
beautiful view and ride. thank you.
I ride the R9s on the holiday specials that they have every year, during the months of November and December. This train runs on the F line from 2nd Ave in lower Manhattan to Queens Plaza on the E line, from 10:00am to 5:00pm. I remember riding the R9s back in the 70's on the A,CC,LL and J lines. The straw seats, the over fans, that loud compressor and Whirrrrrrl sound along with the smoke coming from the brake pads and the burnt synthetic oil, brings back a lot of memories. Long live the R9s, (a.k.a "The Smoky Joe's").
Gadite1967 that was 2 cool
I grew up in the Marcy projects in the 60s and 70s and this brought back memories. I cannot find the front view of the G train on youtube. Maybe your future project. Thanks for posting these videos.
+Joseph Morales So glad you liked the video! I'll try to get the G train as well, but it'll be tough because no trains with front windows run on the G.
DJ Hammers you are doing a good job!!!
Great video! I spent a lot of time on the M line going to high school at CTK..and also taking the line numerous times over the Williamsburg Bridge to hang out in the Lower East Side and the Bowery. I honestly miss the original route of the M when it would run down to Bay Parkway on the D line during weekday rush hours.
This the MTA train, I never ride on since my mom and I were going somewhere to Downtown Brooklyn to ride only the trains that can be close to home.
Nice video. Would have liked to see a shot of the train.
Video I took of the train:

lol do you remember which car was leading?
Great video. I'm amazed at the condition at some of the portions of the elevated tracks during the first half of the video. The stations look nice, but everything else looks like it hasn't been touched in years. Also I'm surprised there's still a huge piece of that abandoned elevated line still there. Is it structuarally important to the line or did they just never feel a need to take it down?
+Joseph Davis It's structurally important to keep that section above I think. I'll have to ask.
I like the quality of the video image.
What kind of camera are you using and do you remember the settings for it?
Myrtle Ave El...Jay St. / to Broadway...downstairs was a great toy store : Bargain Town USA.
I think I hear Chris and Knuckles from the Super Subway Bros at the end of this video.
Can anyone tell me at 11:40 the train approaches a left-hand curve, did the line previously continue straight ahead, it looks as though it did at some stage judging by the infrastructure. I'm not a local I live in Australia and are "R1-9s" 5 car sets heritage trains? Thanks for posting this video.
The Myrtle ave. el originally went to downtown Brooklyn. That portion of the line was closed in 1969. The R1-9 cars are original IND subway cars from the 1930's.
Have the MTA repainted the station signs? Always had problems reading the old ones . And even replaced clickey - clack track
Very nice!!!!!!!!!!
love the viedo
excellent video good shooting
Nice to see them in action again! I used to ride these everyday in the 70's to school on the then "CC" 8th Ave local. One question, what happened to the very distinctive air brake release sounds? The one that sounds something like Chow-Cshshshshsh (Closest I can do with text :LOL) Did they do any upgrades over the years that eliminated them?
Sometimes you can still hear that. As far as I know the brake valves have not been swapped out. I also stopped recording when we were stopped at stations to save battery and memory, so the sounds may have occurred in that timeframe.
Are you drive the train
Awesome video! I could tell it was on a weekend by the 4 car M train approaching the Central Avenue station. Question is do you all know when the R1's are running? because it seems like as the train approaches each station, passengers are armed with cameras as though they are expecting it.
The dates and times that the R1s are running are posted online, usually on railfan forums, the MTA website, and/or the Transit Museum's facebook page.
Why is everyone taking a picture of the person who is recording a footage train ride when using the M Train? : 0
This is an excursion train.
@@TheRailLeaguer oh. 😀
You know to this day I still wonder what the uper leave of myrtle is I meen I ee on the train but have you ever wonder what it is like
The upper level of Myrtle Avenue used to host Myrtle Avenue trains that went west along the Myrtle Avenue Line to Downtown Brooklyn. That section was closed in 1969, replaced by the B54 bus.
Which is the abandoned line at 12:20?
+vonmazur1 Thats the remains of the southern section of the Myrtle Avenue Elevated. Service ended on that section in 1969.
Thanks DJ; When I lived in CT and worked for Metro North and its predecessors, I rode every line in NY, at least once...That was in the 70's and I have forgotten what was what now....
I thought that track is for the J and Z lines.
it is the remains of the myrtle ave line to downtown brooklyn, torn down in 1969.
I believe the junction tracks at Broadway station were always there even before the Myrtle Ave El downtown section was torn down in 1969. Is that right?
nice
I grow right up on fresh pond Rd u couldn't have the M subway back in the day like I between the 80 & 90.
So the M now goes to Manhattan on weekends? No more Myrtle Avenue Shuttle?
subwayfantx1608 The M operates on weekdays from Metropolitan Avenue to Forest Hills - 71st Avenue. At all times except late nights, service operates between Metropolitan Avenue and Essex Street. At late nights, the M operates as the Myrtle Avenue Shuttle from Metropolitan Avenue to Myrtle Avenue - Broadway.
I don't know if anyone noticed on this video but the train ran a red light
Там внизу еще горел синий.
There is else below BLUE light burned.
that train needs a tune up and it's oil changed.
16:38 i had a family member who lived on hewes st
Old Myrtle Ave extension.....
Can anyone out there in RUclips land give an honest answer to a question? Why is the NY City subway so slow? Compared to the Tube in London, the subway in Berlin, or any other subway in the world, the NY City subway is so slow. I've heard in was a long standing union slow down, the terrible condition of the subway infrastructure or any other reason you can come up with. Any honest reason for the slow trains? thank you. By the way, am not referring to this particular video.
It's not. The reason it seems so slow is because the camera is so close to the front. It creates an effect that makes it seem slower than it is. If you're able to ride the trains yourself, you'll be able to see the trains at their regular speed.
These trains look very outdated. Any truth behind my observation?
The R1-R9's were built in the 1930's and are historically preserved subway cars and are occasionally used for excursions. I guess that is one way of calling them "outdated".
My dads a train driver in Philadelphia
What is "RFW"??
videobruce b I know i'm extremely late but the term "RFW" means Rail Fan Window.
