Linda and Richard were just so freaking good together on stage.I was incredibly fortunate to have seen them together when this record came out in 83' or early 84' This song was always my wife's favorite, I kinda favored the title track and Wall of Death, all in all one of the greatest records of all time.
It's almost unbearable to watch Linda singing this song when you know what was happening between her and Richard when the tour took place. Simon Nicol once said that it seemed like he spent their marriage writing songs for her to sing when he left her and this the message of this harrowing vieo. It's compelling but so painful.
Yes, I saw that last R&L Thompson show at the Dominion Tot Ct Rd London in 81, where she told him on stage to get rid of the Martin Guitar and get a nice Ovation, just to annoy him, obviously.
Rock and Roll was never meant to be this gut-wrenchingly real. Linda's mental turmoil is all too clear and the audience must have felt uncomfortable to be witnessing it.
Glad to see they have laid those times behind them. Richard (who broke the marriage) played on Linda solo album several years ago. They broke up at the same time as my parents did. If Richard and Linda behaved like my parents, they did good.
i had seen them on this tour at ripleys on south street in philadelphia. a fantastic cozy music club where you were practically inches from the stage. most of us in the audience that night were aware of their marriage's state of affairs which had boiled into public disgust with one another. what maybe one of the best songs richard ever composed, "walking on a wire", was to be sung by linda with the warm and fuzzy lines "I hand you my ball and chain,You just hand me that same old refrain. I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire. And I'm falling" it was one of the must hear songs from the album but expecting and worse demanding that they perform it was like pouring kerosene on the fire. while fleetwood mac's "go your own way" had the same vibe and backstory, i don't think stevie nicks and lindsay buckingham ever got as public in their break up as linda and richard. it was like not taking your eyes away from a violent car wreck, prurient fan interest where no fan should have such a right, its not something that i listen to with the same glee when i first spun it on my turntable 40-years ago.
Linda Thompson did a beautiful album where she does this one as well as some other great tunes. I recommend it to anyone that loves here voice. She does dimming of the day and other great tunes.
I hand you my ball and chain You just hand me that same old refrain I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling I wish I could please you tonight My medicine just won't come right I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling Too many steps to take Too many spells to break Too many nights awake And no one else This grindstone's wearing me Your claws are tearing me Don't use me endlessly It's too long, too long to myself Where's the justice, where's the sense? When all the pain is on my side of the fence I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling Too many steps to take Too many spells to break Too many nights awake And no one else, ohh This grindstone's wearing me Your claws are tearing me Don't use me endlessly It's too long, too long to myself Ohh, it scares you when you don't know Whichever way the wind might blow Ohh, I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire And I'm falling, ohh
@MehefinHeulog It certaily answers the question in Valerio: "Who will help the tightrope walker when he tumbles to the net?" Nobody. Ultimately we're all in this alone.
Is this the tour where Richard said he fell in love with someone else and their agent(or whoever)talked Linda into going on the road?? I heard she hit Richard over the head with a bottle backstage and he came back to do an encore with blood running down his face.
They were split by the release of Shoot Out the Lights. She went on the tour angry and they burned their way through the memories of anyone who had a ticket.
@@rukeyser i saw them in philadelphia at ripley's. it was a cold, icy affair from them but the songs were first rate. but how did she sing this night after night?

This song along with Silver Spring, Blue Umbrella and Southern Cross are my go to heartache songs...
I've been reading about this tour for decades. THANK YOU.

As soon as the song began, I could hear that, yup, this is is THAT tour.
what happened between them?
After thirty years, this song still can't be used as background music.

Thank you for this upload. ❤️
totally amazing, gives me chills everytime

Some of her versions I like better than the ones she did with Richard.
Agreed! That solo album was great!
Great song...and lucky we ave it preserved!
They never even look at each other.
Beautiful, sad, transcendent.
Life isn't always a bowl of cherries - yours may be, congratulations. Some of us like music that reflects that fact.
Magical,as well as being so unutterably melaoncholy,A very under rated Band
Still sounds great all these years further on
Thank you for the upload.
Where's the justice
And where's the sense?
When all the pain
Is on my side of the fence?
Bless you, Linda.
good god. i cant believe that this exists.

I hand you my ball and chain
You just hand me that same old refrain
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling
I wish I could please you tonight
My medicine just won't come right
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling
Too many steps to take
Too many spells to break
Too many nights awake
And no one else
This grindstone's wearing me
Your claws are tearing me
Don't use me endlessly
It's too long, too long to myself
Where's the justice, where's the sense?
When all the pain is on my side of the fence
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling
Too many steps to take
Too many spells to break
Too many nights awake
And no one else, ohh
This grindstone's wearing me
Your claws are tearing me
Don't use me endlessly
It's too long, too long to myself
Ohh, it scares you when you don't know
Whichever way the wind might blow
Ohh, I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling
I'm walking on a wire, I'm walking on a wire
And I'm falling, ohh
Beautiful Song!
Amazing, I wish I could've seen it.
wonderful
Tx, i could hardly sleep the past nights. ;-) im so full of remorse.
Have a nice weekend
Thx for posting
A lovely and sad song.

Nobody. Ultimately we're all in this alone.
Does anyone know that there's a deluxe edition of SHOOT OUT THE LIGHTS out now?
So difficult what they were going through....
A sick and ironic example of how masochism sells. This tour was their biggest, but it can't have been easy on anyone.
what happened between them?

As I heard it, he wanted to take another wife.

I can't imagine what this tour was like. I think I would have died from acid indigestion.
He actually does it almost every show.
No, they WERE a team until they divorced.
Sequel to the Great Valerio
@Lavxtee This might have been when she was developing the vocal disease that cut her career short.
They are a team..wtf
lol
zzzzzzzzzz..........
what a hideous dress

what a wonderful voice
