This is very helpful. I am building out a 1988 chevy van home and I have so many pieces of miscut wood that I want to turn into canvases. Thank you for the helpful video!
Hello :) what about when I don't want to paint the whole board, but want the wood to be seen also? Or paint on actual wood, like a slice of a branch or trunk and want the grain to be seen?
It's much easier to use an orbital sander for the first round or two, then switch to hand sanding for the very fine sand paper. This will cut the sanding time by orders of magnitude.
Thanks for the video! I've learned so much from you . Would I still need to do this with (pre sanded but nothing else ) wood cutouts say frame an art store to get it to take paint properly?
Hi, I know this is late but here is a question: I am painting CHESS PIECES made of SHESHAM AND BOXWOOD; these pieces are SUPPOSED to be dried out for a long time before you get your final chess set; since I am going to SAND and paint these pieces that are supposed to be long ago dried out--- do I still NEED to SEAL the pieces before I gesso the pieces?????--they ARE going to be painted with acrylic paint!
Thank you that was helpful. I have some painted cabinet doors that I would like to paint in the center panel, could I just lightly sand and apply the three coats of gesso? Thank you P.S. I am new at all this.
I want to ask u something really important, is it okay is I do the same steps you did and instead of using acrylic colors i use pastel color? Like is okay with pastel as well?? I hope u see my message it’s really important 🙏🏽
Hi, So I just painted one of my side table with the actual paint to the color of my choice. Now, I want to do some art work on that using acrylic paint. Do I have to prep even now? I am afraid, if I sand down it would peel off the new paint I applied.
I use wood for miniatures and I find it sucks in the paint or stain so quickly that you can never get it completely even. I am going to give the PVA a try because I have tons of the stuff lol!
I have painted with both oil-stick and acrylic straight onto hardwood panels, and it worked fine and has held up perfectly over time. I do put a few layers of gesso on plywood and particle board, but I didn't find that the wood absorbed the paint at all.
When you get to the stage of applying the gesso can you add an acrylic paint to the gesso as I don’t want a white surface because I will be painting a landscape 😊
Thanks for the video, mate! I am doing a religious icon of Saint Andrew. since I work at a woodshop, there's more than enough quality scrap to borrow. The board I have now is mahogany and I believe I have the grain oriented correctly with the core towards the face of the icon. I heard warping in a convex manner is better than concave if it ends up happening to an icon. I had some good quality gesso from a while ago, but it got moldy(I didn't know that could even happen!). Off to by PVA glue and more gesso!
Hi! Can anyone help? I’ve been asked to abstract paint some mahogany panels using my acrylics. Is the prepping process the same whatever type of wood you paint on? Thanks in advance!
Ohh. That explains why i have painted some stuff, but its like the wood "drinks" the paint :O Ive given it probable like 5 thick layers (or 15 thin layers ?) And specially white Will just be sucked

Every surface you paint on must be prepared or iit can cause problems in the future with the paint

Thank you for this video I've been looking for this, I have some very thin wood pieces that warp when painted on will this prevent warps??
Is this work for liquid acrylic and wanted color?
Can a cartoon be painted on the board and place on the lawn. Thanks
Do you sand again after the last coat of sealer/before you paint with the gesso?
Thanks for this video!
I do. Fact I said after each coat of gesso. It takes 2 minute with an electric sander which saves the arms.
What happens if I dont use Gesso? It is optional, yes?
When you get to the stage of applying the gesso can you add an acrylic paint to the gesso as I don’t want a white surface because I will be painting a landscape 😊
Yes
I heard Gesso comes in different colours

You wouldn't get the same results.
