    I am thoroughly enjoying having the story unfold with the same pace and detail as it did for the participants! I can 'feel' the fog of war McClellan faced.

    I’ve walked completely around the walls of those ramparts where you’re standing when I was in Boy Scouts back in the 1970s. I had completely forgotten about that

    This is shaping up to be a really excellent series. I'm particuarly enjoying the 'real time' delivery of these videos as the campaign builds up and begins to unfold.

    My great great grandfather Christopher, an Irish immigrant with the NY 98th arrived with McClelland and lost an eye in the first days. Two weeks and he was sent home.

    That Confederate Ironclad really affected the campaign by it's presence!

      She sure did! McClellan had wanted to use the James River but it was not open to him in the early stages of the campaign, precisely because of the CSS Virginia.

    I am really enjoying this series. The Union needed to neutralize the Merrimac by attacking Norfolk by land and capturing its base. It always seems strange to me that the Union attacked up the constricted peninsula rather than landing a little further south where the terrain was more wide open.

      Agreed--the Confederates were very worried about the Norfolk-Petersburg approach to Richmond. But Little Mac never takes it. Eventually, when Norfolk is captured, it will be without McClellan! That's a neat story we plan to cover during this series.

    History told this way is fascinating, it's perhaps time schools looked into using miniatures battles to fire the childrens imagination

    I have a Battle in a Box by Perry Miniatures’s 28mm scale does anyone play scales that large or mostly smaller scale ?

    • @LittleWarsTV
      @LittleWarsTV  2 года назад

      28mm is actually the most popular scale for tabletop miniatures. But it's skirmish style games. For big battles, scales like 15mm, 10mm, and 6mm are more popular (for practical reasons)

    Here’s a question if the CSS Virginia was so effective why not make more to break the blockade ? Not seaworthy in the open seas ?

      They did! The Virginia and her squadron made a number of aggressive patrols, hoping to taunt the Monitor into a second battle. The Monitor, however, was under strict orders not to re-engage. On April 11, the Virginia's squadron was reinforced by the paddle side-wheeler CSS Jamestown, and she, the Virginia, and five other ships sortied out, in full view of the Union squadron, enticing them to fight. When it became clear that Union ships were unwilling to fight, the Confederate squadron moved in and captured three merchant ships, the brigs Marcus and Sabout and the schooner Catherine T. Dix.

      Stephen nailed it, yes. The Virginia did sally forth many times. But she was NOT very sea-worthy and as cautious as the Federal navy was, the rebels were equally cautious about risking the Virginia. Neither side wanted to lose their prized ironclad wonder weapons at this early stage.

    I'll bet Little Mac supervised the unloading of the ship because that is more important 'n meeting with his general officers.

    Will this series include general Jacksons Shanandoah campaign, which robbed McClellan a 40,000 troops attacking Richmond from the north?

    • @LittleWarsTV
      @LittleWarsTV  2 года назад

      Of course! It would be impossible to tell this story without the influence Stonewall Jackson played. We'll be covering that for sure.
