Let's visit The White Tower of Thessaloniki which is a monument and museum on the waterfront of the city of Thessaloniki, capital of the region of Macedonia in northern Greece. The white tower of Thessaloniki replaced an old Byzantine fortification, known to have been mentioned around the 12th century, that the Ottoman Empire reconstructed to fortify the city's harbour sometime after Sultan Murad II captured Thessaloniki in 1430. The White Tower of Thessaloniki became a notorious prison and scene of mass executions during the period of Ottoman rule.
The White Tower of Thessaloniki was substantially remodelled and its exterior was whitewashed after Greece gained control of the city in 1912. The White Tower of Thessaloniki has been adopted as the symbol of the city.
Thessaloniki is a Greek port city on the Thermaic Gulf of the Aegean Sea. Evidence of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history remains, especially around Ano Poli, the upper town. The ruins of Roman Emperor Galerius’ 4th-century palace include the Rotunda that has been both a church and a mosque. Much of the city center was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1917. The rebuilt 20th-century city has a modern European layout.

Hi Vic.....I was at this White Tower in 1973 together wit my Dad & Sister........I was 8 years old......watching your video jogged my memory of the inside and the stairs......as a child it took what was like forever to climb to the top.......We used to stand on the harbour and trow in a fishing line......caught some strange ugly looking fish ( I remember we were told not to touch the skin by the locals).......we stayed in a Hotel (Hotel Elgreco" ) Dad filmed a Military parade from the balcony.......I think he could have been jailed for this at the time......Missiles Tanks......marching soldiers.....I remember after the parade the road had been ploughed up by the tanks........Dad still has this video on super 8mm film.......Plan to return 1 day......best wishes....stay well

Hello my friend, wow, what incredible memories you have from your 1973 visit. Personally, I visited the city in 1988 for the first time and 2018 (30 years) later I went back to videotape a few of the sites. And yes, like you, when I was climbing the steps of the white tower in 2018, I could still remember doing so in 1988!
