Yeah that's exactly what I experienced with these mics, true to life sound. Glad you enjoyed! Have a watch of the full London video and let me know your thoughts.
As a drummer, I know lewitt for the drum kit mics set, and thoses are really designed to be placed as overhead on drums For field recording, it seams to me that they're a bit harsh on the high, wich is good for cymbals, but can be a bit aggresive for more mechanical sounds
Thanks for the great video mate, Do you think this setup will provide better sound than using a H5 or a H8. I am looking to do more run and gun but also want noise free crispy ambient sounds, any tips are appreciated 🙏
The real gem in this set up is the Lewitt mics, they are incredible. Now I would say that they would perform better than any build-in mics on a recorder, like the H5 or H8 ones, but then again if the lewitt's were plug into the H5 or H8, that would be some set-up. The Tascam used in this video, the Dr60-Mkii does produce incredibly clean audio. Its pre amp are amazing. But its interface and build isnt the best. It takes 4 AA batteries as standard, and when using the Lewitt Mics with it, the 4 batteries would last approx. 15minutes (AWFUL). So you do need a battery bank, adding to the weight of the set-up. This set-up for me produces incredible audio results for the cost. I guess if I could afford to go for a better field recorder then I would. But its not essential. GOOD LUCK! and let me know what you choose.
@@TheCameraManReviews thank you for the detailed reply mate. I think the audio is very good and clean. I quite like the Lewitts. Great video my friend!! Loved the idea of the power bank velcroed to the unit. I will be doing that with my Tascam so thanks for the idea!! Any idea what specs I need for a smaller power bank. It’s only doing audio not video so something minimalist I’m thinking?
Not sure of power bank I am afraid, but one thing i would say is be careful where u put the Velcro and how u pull of the power bank. In a moment of haste I pulled mine off quite forcefully and snapped the battery door in half. Luckily I was able to order a replacement, but still something to be aware of.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for. Someone else also suggested the LCT 040 match pair but since these are sold as instrument microphones I was wondering if they would be good at picking up signals from a larger distance when used outdoors. Your walk through London made me decide these are great mics, that piece with the street musician was a real WOW. At first I thought you added a bit of music in the studio so I had to go back twice to look and listen again. The water sounds at Sloane Square give a good indication of what the Lewitts can do. The Tascam DR-60DMkii is a great recorder. I have this one for a few years now and love it, great microphone inputs with very low noise which is perfect when I need to crank up the preamps a bit too much to get a good sound level. When I bought this one, the Zoom recorders had more noise on the preamps
These microphones are rated at 20dB (A) probably work ok in a public environment, but not the choice for quiet scenarios, they would be a waste of money for any serious field recording, the rode NT5 with 14dB self noise would be the low end budget option, not this.
i am about to do the same thing. i will use the t.bone SC140 stereo pair. they are advertized with 9,2 dB(A) self noise. marketing aside they maybe have 10 or 11 which should be great even for silent situations. a set for 99 each also seems cheap to me. i will test them and then tell you if they actually great or crap. also there is another not that cheap option, the SE Elekronics SE8 stereo set, 369€ maybe it helps.

I would like to know if this is an individual phenomenon and look forward to hearing back. Thank you very much!
But the LCT 040 are only 14.6 mV/Pa sensitivity, and self noise high at 20dB, so probably not good enough for ambient sounds in nature ? On paper they could do with better specs for nature sounds, but urban soundscapes should be fine. Thx for clip

I also ask you to recommend an alternative to the microphones you showed in your video. For example, would the "t.bone SC 140 Stereoset " be just as good for recording external sounds?
Great settup and video. One thing though, how did you deal with handling noise from the cables? I have similar microphones and tried this settup and I got great audio besides all the handling noise which ruined the recording. Not too worried because it was just a test at home.
Honestly, I didn't get any cable noise at all. I taped both cables together so only the very ends are separated I also only use 50cm xlr cables, so they are kept tight to the recorder.
Thanks for the great video. Let me ask you one question. Does this microphone record Mosquito sound due to radio interference near the station? Is it a microphone with RF countermeasures?
Am finally getting around to having some fun with recording. But now I cannot seem to find a Rodes stereo bar that has a place in the middle to attach a video recording device on top...no slot for an attaching screw. I am wondering if yours is a reletively old one. Thanks.
Hi thanks for the comment, the Power bank used is a non-branded 20800mah. I think I paid approx. £25 for it some months ago. Works perfectly with the Dr-60.
Very nice setup, but I have a question about how well the setup will do for mobile field recording on a nature walk. I am trying to record nature sounds while hiking and looking for a setup that will capture the ambient sounds, such as birds, insects, and streams, without capturing my footsteps while moving at a typical hiking pace. I intend to have a Lavalier mic for my vlog voice recording, and I plan to have an assistant carry that field audio rig. In post-production, I will layer the ambient audio under the voice audio to get an immersive experience but without the annoyance of the footsteps for 120 km while trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp.

@@TheCameraManReviews Ah sure thanks. So what stereo set up did you have the mics in? Also how big are they? I've touched an SM58 SM57 but I think the smallist I've touched would be the AT-4021.
Thanks for the video and demo, I did put on decent headphones to listen. Q: how much post did you do to the audio in the demo section? If so, could you give some idea of EQ / compression etc. Cheers PS: I have just purchased one of these Tascam’s after sending a Zoom 32-bit float H unit back as whilst the 32-bit float is amazing but the pre amps are so important and lifting the levels on quieter sounds there was just so much other noise/s, would have been a huge (post) job to try to clean the audio.
Hello, great topic and well delivered. What's your opinion on stereo mic techniques? Are you mostly using ORTF? Also do you find this rig to be discreet or are you turning lots of heads? Cheers
I bought this pair also for field recording. I love their sound quality but i have a problems with RF or EMI noise on city , or while they are in the room with router. The cables i have are all right. Did you have such problems as well?
When Lewitt was installed on the Tascam 60d Mark II, when I held the wind shield, did the recording sound sound because we held it earlier, sir?... Please answer 🙏
I have just purchased the Lewitt LCT 40 MATCH PAIR and I have a problem. When I connect them to my TASCAM DR70 recorder, a constant frequency between 5800 and 6000 hertz is produced. I have changed cables, I have tried other microphones on the recorder and this does not happen. It is true that when you try them on a mixing console and interface like Audient ID22 this does not happen, but it worries me because I bought them for field recording with the Tascam because of their size and their good comments. Has something similar happened to you? I have practically the same configuration as you, I want to return them

hey, thank you for this film. At your insistence I bought these microphones. The courier brought them to me today. Can't say anything about the quality of the recordings yet (although somehow the product looks very pro). I also bought a Rode WS8 windshield and I have some problem with it. I think it is too tight for this microphone. Don't you get this impression? how did you deal with it? (I am afraid of damaging the microphones). Greetings from Warsaw!
@@TheCameraManReviews ok, thanks. I'm already looking forward to seeing how they start working. When I have something interesting I'll be happy to show you! :) They will work with the ZoomH6, Rode StereoBar and Rode Tripod2. All the best.
Hi, lovely vid! Thanks for making it 😊 Question about the RODE WS-8… I can hear they cope beautifully in your demo, but how hard was the wind? I am building a field kit which is currently a pair of LOM Basic Ucho omnis, RODE stereo bar, ZOOM F6, and the last thing I need to get for it is wind protection. The recommended kit is a pair of Rycote BBGs and matching windjammers, but they are very pricey! How do you think the Ws-8 compares? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this?
i have a question i have the same mics (Lewitt LCT 040 matched pair) just purchased them connected them (in stereo) to my zoom F3 and one is louder than the other both having the same gain also tested them with the zoom h6n same problem both with same gain. have you had this problem?
Not bad... But you should have used some separation between the two microphones. Better yet, put them in a binaural setup (no idea how you would do that...). The only problem was that there was little directionality to the sound, I couldn't tell what was coming from the left and what was coming from the right.
Thanks for making this video, it cleared up a lot of unknowns for an audio newb :). Do you get any handling noise with such mounting setup? No Rycote or similar shock mounts needed?
Hello does it fit the windscreen rode ws8 to lct 040 because I see that the diameter of lct is 22.86mm and the diameter of ws8 is 20mm, also ws9 is 22mm. Please can you help me because I wanna buy a good windscreen for my lct
It certainly does, it is a tad tight, but the rode windscreens have a rubber O ring that stretches. And what is great is the LCT 040's have a gap that the o ring fits in nicely.
Great video - Have you considered the Tiny Zoom F3 - 32 bit float so you never have to worry about the input gain. If too loud and clipped or equally too quiet on the recording, everything is recoverable. I like your choice of Lewitt LCT 040's.
@Walking in all Weathers, hey just wondering if your grey market equipment has held up well. Also curious if you have found a company that will insure grey market equipment in the uk. Thanks if you could help :)
Last summer I began to record ambience, and I want to say that this mics sound good in loud places, such as a big city. But! They have self-noise level 20, and it is very high. U cannot use this mics for the nature ambience recordings.
@@TheCameraManReviews, nature ambience, birds, insects etc. When you close to the sound and the sound is loud (lige nightingale song in spring or grasshoppers in summer) - there is no issues. But in quiet locations self noise is very notable. I use tascam dr-100 MK3 with buit-in mics and Clippy XLR EM272 with this recorder. Clippys is much better, but still not ideal. Aslo I will try this year Rode NTG-5 for bird recording.
@@iamwanderingby Yeah sry just realised I put 25, was meant to say 20. Insects are definitely out the question! What level are the Clippy's ? I was going to buy a pair of these to test out.
@@TheCameraManReviews , 14. Of course, another key point is pre-amps, may be in tascam 60 they are better, than in 100. And of course, they are better in Sound Devices recorders, but the price is much higher. As I heared, for the nice quality quiet nature recordings I need mics with noise level
This may well be the best budget option, but there are vastly better microphones for the job tbh. Have a look into the Sennheiser MKH8000 series. Or the similar Schoeps. Honestly I find this a bit muddy and washy, the lewitts are a bit overwhelmed in this situation. Defo a great option for a hobbiest though.
Thank you for getting back to me :). I am very new to field recording and I bought the DR-05x. Do you know what would be the best external mic for it or is the DR-05x just not the right recorder?
Tascam is great but for the quiet source recordings it have too much of a noise. For recording road traffic, speech or loud sounds is fine but if you start to record ambience like, birds, wind in the forest or water stream sound, bonfire etc it will add noise to the recording and for professional production is a big NO because you won't be able to remove this in the post-production process. If you have a tip on how to avoid the white noise while mic gain is only halfway then let me know. Rising a gain introduces more noise but if you don't do this then you will have a quiet recording whereas if you add compression and limiter in post-production it will also bring this (quiet but significant white noise) that Tascam produces when recording is ON. So it seems like Tascam will only record loud sounds in quality that can be used professionally. I would love to hear your thoughts about this. Maybe there trick that can be done to avoid this in recordings with Tascam. Let me know, Many thanks!
Even thou this is a year old video, your setup is really not the "best setup ever", whether you are on a budget or not. Microphones are way too noisy and the recorder is not really that good. You can get better mics (even cheapo tbone sc140 are better) and better recorder (even zoom h6 is better) for the same price as your setup. I felt like saying this, cause titles like this mislead people...
The best ambient audio field recording set up? Absolutely not. Not even close. A good budget option. Sure. How ever those mics do sound decent and I'd have no issue using that audio in a professional setting.
I don't believe you that this is the best setup ever, your recordings don't sound that good to me. Many microphones will sound better than your recordings.

@@AsmrHujan They need to come as a pair, as they are match for the same sound levels. You will need to find a MATCHED PAIR. good luck!
@@TheCameraManReviews I'll look for a pair, but none in Indonesian sales
How do you attach Camera to Rode Stereo Bar?
with a sticky gopro mount. :-)
I have practically the same configuration as you, I want to return them
Send them back and get replacements. This has never happened to myself.
What piece of equipment are you using on the bottom middle of the stereo bar to both attach it to a camera's cold shoe and to the handle?
Dam that is a great question! in truth I cant remember what it is, i think a cold shoe mount to a 1/4 inch thread i think.
one of these www.amazon.co.uk/JJC-Camera-Hot-Shoe-Adapter/dp/B08B87Z8N3/ref=sr_1_10?crid=14S4PKECAFFLO&keywords=cold+shoe+to+1%2F4&qid=1675365790&sprefix=cold+shoe+to+1%2F4%2Caps%2C100&sr=8-10
hey, thank you for this film.
They are a little tight, but work your way around, pulling them down as you turn. once on they very good fit. No wind! 🙂
No, I would send them back and get replacements. Just out of interest, if you switch the mics over, is the same one still louder?
@@TheCameraManReviews yes I switched the mics and cables and the same mic is still louder
@@LeyendaProductions Defo send back and get replacements
No handling noise at all.
Does it a good equipment for nature ambient soundscape recordings, for example birds in the forest ?
Not sure if this is a stupid question or not, but can you use the Tascam on it's own, without the camera?
Yes you can. 🙂
@@TheCameraManReviews what to choose ws8 or ws9 what fit better?
@@sofokop I would go for the Rode WS8 Windshields
@@TheCameraManReviews thank you very much sir, I hope in this gap does not disturb the recording of the microphone...
@@sofokop No, I have used them now for many months with no issue. Have a great day.
any post EQ, or is that the actual low end?
I hope Lewitt will make an omni version of this mic.
I saw that you have connected the mobile phone to the pocket so audio and video are synchronized?
low noise floor test please
How would this setup work for filming live music ?
cool I want one
can you record in stereo
what about out phase issues? they are pretty close to each other
Great video - Have you considered the Tiny Zoom F3 - 32 bit float so you never have to worry about the input gain. If too loud and clipped or equally too quiet on the recording, everything is recoverable. I like your choice of Lewitt LCT 040's.
can you do this with the 140 air pair ?
also how long are your xlr to your tascam ? seems to be all hidden away
The limiters seem to be taking quite a beating. Maybe the levels were too hot?
@Walking in all Weathers, hey just wondering if your grey market equipment has held up well. Also curious if you have found a company that will insure grey market equipment in the uk. Thanks if you could help :)
Are you making some pretty good scratch?
A less weight setup: in-ear binaural XLR mic and Zoom F3 recorder.
Last summer I began to record ambience, and I want to say that this mics sound good in loud places, such as a big city. But! They have self-noise level 20, and it is very high. U cannot use this mics for the nature ambience recordings.
I would consider anything below 25 decent and more than capable of ambient recording, What do u record out of interest?
Thanks, is it made out of plastic or metal?
This may well be the best budget option, but there are vastly better microphones for the job tbh. Have a look into the Sennheiser MKH8000 series. Or the similar Schoeps. Honestly I find this a bit muddy and washy, the lewitts are a bit overwhelmed in this situation. Defo a great option for a hobbiest though.
I take it you cannot use these mics with a tascan DR-05x?
Unfortunately not, you would need XLR inputs & phantom power. 😞
Thank you for getting back to me :). I am very new to field recording and I bought the DR-05x. Do you know what would be the best external mic for it or is the DR-05x just not the right recorder?
Can this be strictly for field recording? I'm not looking to add a camera
How do you think Zoom H1 would have done this task just as well?
Can someone tell me what bag that is ? It would be ideal for my setup

Hey dude! I bought this exact setup and my recordings all have lots of hiss... any idea what might be causing this? I literally cant figure it out.
If you are in a city, probably what is called RF noise. You need to shield your cables.
What does this sound like in a quiet setting? All of your examples have lots of ambient noise.
can these be configured in omni?
Wouldn't a shock mount make sense?
I thought it would require one too, but it didnt need it.
It'd be nice if it was made a regular field recording box instead of some weird detached DSLR thingy.

4:37 tf- are you in the middle of the road?
yep
And that is what is so fantastic about have your own opinions. You don't have to believe me and I encourage everyone to make their own mind up.
Those are not the best microphones and you're not using the best AD converter, so no.
What would you choose at the same price point ?
The Videomic Pro X, with the zoom F3, has Far Superior Sound Quality.
Doesnt produce stereo though, so isn't better.
No center, you must learn how to make sound !!!
