As someone who doesn't live in the US, why the flip would you tip if there's no person to tip? What are you tipping, the online service or the restaurant in general? Tipping is nuts in the first place, but that's even worse 😂

They actually leave because tipping culture is dying off and what they pay their workers is a joke. In Romania, for example, tipping is still very much a thing and we have no shortage of workers. Because being nice to customers is worth something. When it will die off here as well, the service will be terrible. It already is going to hell because we have the highest costs in the EU with the second lowest salary. But this is a story for another time.

In the U.S. customers are also just assholes though. I worked as a barista for 5 years and I’m a super cheery person so I did get more tips, but I fucking hated it because people are so mean now. When I started back in 2019 you’d have the occasional asshole buts that’s to be expected. Now there’s more assholes than not. As much as I liked being a barista, I bolted as soon as I could because it was so mentally and emotionally draining for me to be berated, insulted, and threatened every day. It’s only gotten worse with how the economy is going.

The pandemic turned everyone into an entitled ahole. People should learn that no service is free and no service is your right. As you don't work for free and without respect, neither do the rest around you.
I'm glad you managed to get out. I hope you find happiness in what you do!

I believe that like 90% of restaurants should just cease to exist. The majority should be downsized into popups, trucks, and other small-scale operations. If Canadian and American zoning laws are so hostile to mixed land usage, then this would benefit more neighborhoods and provide more food diversity. The margins wouldnt be as tight and people could actually be paid well

I mean, QR codes save on having to touch dirty menus that servers likely dont wipe down after every table. Like, COVID concerns aside (bc everyone is just pretending it doesnt exist anymore lol) there's other concerns? Like flu? Norovirus? Those are also contact driven.
I have never experienced working alongside tech making my job "harder", lmao. Also PS, if you've ever worked any hospitality ever, those "modifications" you claim are only happening because of the technology implemented. People were doing that regardless. Just more people outside of that are now aware its happening.

For the consumer, it's harder for restaurants to change their prices (e.g. surge pricing) with physical menus.
Physical menus are good for people who don't have smart phones, like kids. A lot goes into the design of physical menus. Most digital ones I've encountered are either clunky to navigate, glitchy, ugly, or just pdf scans of the physical menu (again, clunky).
