I notice people tip less when they pay online at the table with their phone. They think we can’t see it. Ironically we see it faster because it pops up on our computers immediately.
I believe that like 90% of restaurants should just cease to exist. The majority should be downsized into popups, trucks, and other small-scale operations. If Canadian and American zoning laws are so hostile to mixed land usage, then this would benefit more neighborhoods and provide more food diversity. The margins wouldnt be as tight and people could actually be paid well
We went to a restaurant that had a robot server that carried the dishes. But a waiter followed the robot and then moved the dishes from the robot to our table....
I mean, QR codes save on having to touch dirty menus that servers likely dont wipe down after every table. Like, COVID concerns aside (bc everyone is just pretending it doesnt exist anymore lol) there's other concerns? Like flu? Norovirus? Those are also contact driven. I have never experienced working alongside tech making my job "harder", lmao. Also PS, if you've ever worked any hospitality ever, those "modifications" you claim are only happening because of the technology implemented. People were doing that regardless. Just more people outside of that are now aware its happening.
For the consumer, it's harder for restaurants to change their prices (e.g. surge pricing) with physical menus. Physical menus are good for people who don't have smart phones, like kids. A lot goes into the design of physical menus. Most digital ones I've encountered are either clunky to navigate, glitchy, ugly, or just pdf scans of the physical menu (again, clunky).
They actually leave because tipping culture is dying off and what they pay their workers is a joke. In Romania, for example, tipping is still very much a thing and we have no shortage of workers. Because being nice to customers is worth something. When it will die off here as well, the service will be terrible. It already is going to hell because we have the highest costs in the EU with the second lowest salary. But this is a story for another time.
In the U.S. customers are also just assholes though. I worked as a barista for 5 years and I’m a super cheery person so I did get more tips, but I fucking hated it because people are so mean now. When I started back in 2019 you’d have the occasional asshole buts that’s to be expected. Now there’s more assholes than not. As much as I liked being a barista, I bolted as soon as I could because it was so mentally and emotionally draining for me to be berated, insulted, and threatened every day. It’s only gotten worse with how the economy is going.
@@yin4296 I know what you mean. I used to work at events and restaurants doing various jobs from wardrobe to event manager. People used to have more respect back in the day (2007-2015). It’s fine now because we medically know more about vs. what we knew in 2020, thus it’s more treatable and the mortality rate has dropped a significant margin.

Most businesses are small businesses.
maybe have servers to not depend on tips and pay them a wage they can survive on and not expect customers to even leave tips like in any other country
It has its place, and that place is not in restaurants with tipping.
Tipping doesn't belong in any restaurant
@@andrewe2057 tipping is fine as long as it's simply a reward for good work, and they have a living wage as a base.

The same situation in my country. And guess what? Every restaurant who have them tastes bad. Like incredibly bad.
On a digital menu you can change price deppending on the user phone to charge more of iphone users as an exemple.
Thats a great idea because iphone users are proven to want to spend more money on worse stuff

Those places have less costs but also less revenue,so the margins and pays are just as bad.
