  • Which bullet is best for running in a revolver and a carbine rifle?? 1 of several bullets that I'll be doing similar testing with over the next several weeks.
A look at expansion, weight retention and penetration in 10% ballistic gel block with 5 different barrel lengths!

Great video! You’re a godsend for us handloaders who are hitting the woods with combos. Thank you. personally, I was thinking that the 20” was pretty slow, but the results were still phenomenal. I would love to see a Lil Gun 158gr FP-XTP in the same format (for selfish reasons). Thanks again for bringing the great content.

@@tombraley3212 I may get to that one soon.
I did the old style 158gr XTP that I had loaded with H-110 this past weekend, still in editing.. lol.
I’ll try to do a lil-gun loading on the new bullet for my next outing. 😉

Good video on my favorite pistol cartridge! I killed a deer with the 180gr xtp in a 5inch barrel Smith. In a rifle you can really push the 357 over a pistol with little gun . I have a rifle load if I remember is around 1900fps. Darren

Tumbling/yawing is not an uncommon phenomenon, especially if the bullet is deforming. The flattening front is slowing while the rear is trying to maintain its velocity. I could not hear your velocities very well. It sounded like 13something on the rifle and 10something on the 6.5 inch.
Any of them would be a good deer or bear load in any of the barrel lengths as long as you hit every time.
    The spreadsheet helped alot.

I've reloaded many, many calibers and firearms for over 45years and have two 357mag compact revolvers
i never tested 180gr 357but i believe from woods, hiking ,defense against most any thing you would come across including medium size black with my two inch or 3 inch 357 with that 180gr xtp would sufficiently do the job with proper shot placement. i have pistols and revolvers far more powerful but i like 357mag e even in stubbies . it easily fits my pocket or holsters. papa wishing you well 😊

Well....I'm surprised! In my experience, XTP's need to be driven to the upper limits to get consistent expansion. I'm absolutely amazed you got expansion out of the 2" barrel!

I like the video premis. I think it would be interesting to do the test with the entire line of XTP bullets and compare the data.
I think it would also be very interesting to compare the 158 to the 180.
I have killed about 15 deer with the 158 and they usually expand back to nearly the base and come to rest against the opposite hide.
This out of a Marlin at about 1700fps.

I've always considered the 357 magnum to be the top handgun caliber for self defense and I really like digging into the bullet weight/velocity combination.
I've gotten into the 327 federal magnum as well and done similar testing to what you're doing here. Less of a range in weights but some great velocities of up to 2100 in the Henry 20" with a 100 gr HP, 1313 fps in the LCRX with that same load. 1900 with the 127 gr ballistic tip in the Henry. 1600 ft with the 104 gr HTP in a 5.5" single seven.

Fun video. Next to the 10mm, the .357 is my favorite pistol caliber. I would be interested in a similar comparison with other projectile weights. I have very, very recently went to a revolver carry - like this week. My experience with the .357 goes back to the mid 1980s when I was a teen. But other than hunting and hiking, I have never carried a .357 for personal safety. I initially carried 38+Ps in my new little Ruger, but I started to feel like a godless communist and now I want to go back to .357s.
