- RARE OLDIES SOUNDIES WITH MR SLAM STEWART & HIS TRIO ! Stewart was born in Englewood, New Jersey in 1914. While attending the Boston Conservatory, he heard Ray Perry singing along with his violin. This gave him the inspiration to follow suit with his bass. In 1937 Stewart teamed with Slim Gaillard to form the novelty jazz act Slim and Slam. The duo's biggest hit was "Flat Foot Floogie (with a Floy Floy)" in 1938 (see 1938 in music). Stewart found regular session work throughout the 1940s with Lester Young, Fats Waller, Coleman Hawkins, Art Tatum, Johnny Guarnieri, Red Norvo, Don Byas, the Benny Goodman Sextet, Beryl Booker, and other jazz greats. One of the most famous sessions he played on took place in 1945, when Stewart played with Dizzy Gillespie's group (which featured Charlie Parker). Out of those sessions came some of the classics of bebop such as "Groovin' High" and "Dizzy Atmosphere." Throughout the rest of his career, Stewart worked regularly and employed his unique and enjoyable bass-playing style. He died in 1987 in Binghamton, New York.

Slam Stewart - bass, vocal
Beryl Booker - piano, vocal
John Collins - guitar.
This is a scene from the movie, "Oh Boy! What A Girl!" a great and funny movie! You'd probably notice "Big Sid" Catlett, sitting at his drum set.
A treasure. Although we can't see her face, the wonderful Beryl Booker most likely on piano. She joined Slam Stewart's Trio in 1945. Guitarist is outstanding!
This is priceless. Slam Stewart is a jazz legend. The entire setting is so warm and friendly. Back in the day, people would get together on Saturday evenings and have fun like this. I wish there was more out there on the lovely Beryl Booker. I was from her home town of Philadelphia. The ladies in this clip are gorgeous. Women looked so beautiful back when they dressed like this.
I saw Slam Stewart at the 1964 Newport Jazz Festival where he was the "house" bassist paired with Joe Jones on drums. He blew me away then anf his stuff still does!
I saw Slam Stewart perform at Lincoln Center, outdoors with David Amram and a small ensemble. This was in the late 70s. What fun! Thanks for sharing this soundie!
Just saw something where David Amram was playing in Denver late May 2024. Amazing. I first came across him thru an LP I picked up while in college in Ohio years ago....had a tune on it called "Thompkins Square Park Consciousness Expander" I believe. Memorable title. Years later after moving to the NYC area, it was a joy to see him on the scene at Times Square during the "Occupy Wall Street" activities.
Deek Watson is the cat dancing around and clowning in this scene. He really was a character and great showman!
Love Slam Stewart !!!!!!!!!!!
Slam Stewart is one of those less well-known (today) Jazz sidemen who, once you know what to listen for, pops up in literally hundreds of classic recordings from the 30s through 70s. As a bonus, you get his highly entertaining work with Slim Gaillard. So rewarding an artist to seek out!
Thanks for the upload!
Can't possibly love this any more than I do - what a natural groooooove!
What a lovely tune. I just love it and have seen a million times! Thank you Slam!!
j'adore ... un plaisir immense
We like to spend our weekends in this way... swinging, singing, playing with friends! :-)

Drummer is Big Sid Catlett.
WOW! Insanely Wonderful!
what a wonderful track
Thank you for sharing, wonderful stuff!
Slim! nice vid, thanks for posting!
If ever you're feeling low, I strongly suggest watching this video. It will pick you up far better than Prozac.
slam!
To me this is totally cool, this was a wonderful age in popular music and film, which I was born too late to participate in. Thank you for posting this to keep this music alive. You'll never know when some young musician may pick this up again and run with it.
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Brill. sad loss.
Slam could have had a singing career similar to Nat King Cole's. Why wasn't I invited to this party?! So incredibly cool.
Superb guitarist is likely Everett Barksdale.
It’s John Collins.
@@AustinCasey Thanks for the correction, Austin. I was going by photos of Everett Barksdale, but looked up photos of Collins, and it is indeed him. He and Barksdale look enough alike to be brothers.
Does any one know who the other musicians are here (pianist, guitarist, drummer) ?
Big Sid Catlett on drums! The best!
Beryl Booker was a member of Slam Stewart's Trio from 1945. so is most likely the pianist here.
Guitarist is likely Everett Barksdale.
John Collins on Guitar
Anyone know who wrote this song?
