- George Melly's interview with Slim Gaillard.
Jazz Juke Box - Arena - 1983
George Melly presents a number of short films made in the 1940's of some of the greatest and most popular jazz artists of the era, including Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith, Mead Lux Lewis, Albert Ammons, and Pete Johnson. Some of the footage originates from "soundies" films made for visual jukeboxes and the precursors of the pop promotional video. Видеоклипы
I saw Slim Gaillard at Birdland in NY when I was in the Navy in 1952 and I used to go there every night when I had liberty from the ship. I thought he was great even though he was not the headliner at the club, but a second act. He was great and I will always remember his jive.
V. Cool how he spent his later (and final) years in London: where we all love an eccentric! And an eccentric genius to boot....
Don't let the crazy lyrics throw you, this guy was a classic!!
Am I crazy or is there a splash of DaDa in his creative process ?
Listening to this while I skim 'On the road', researching for a literature essay, makes for excellent background.
thx for posting O- Roonie!
"to him the world was just one big o-rooney"

This cat was the greatest man. Mac Skootie...
I think Harry Secombe of The Goons may have listened to the way the bass player sings in the first song!
What exactly is 'Orooney'

If you have to ask, you'll never know!
During the war his IQ was tested and when he scored in the genius range the US military immediately drafted him, sent him to flight school, he crushed it, then they sent him to the Pacific and he flew B-26 medium bombers in the Pacific. He must have seen some things because he NEVER talked about it.
Unfortunately this story is complete bullsh*t.
