I think the fandom ruined it by constantly making that comparison with Pokémon, when Digimon started out it was meant to be a fighting Tamagotchi. People thinking Pokémon started it all is the most western thing, it popularized monster battles in the west but japan was doing it with live insects way before Pokémon and Digimon were even thought of, pretty sure even the whole rivalry thing only exists in people's heads, in japan they co-exist just fine.
