  • Question... Is the Natural Hair Movement Over?? Seems to be a lot of talk about not wanting to deal with natural/curly hair anymore. It's too much work. You've been natural long enough. You want to explore the versatility of natural hair. Straight hair is easier. WHAT DO YOU THINK?? Join in on the conversation in the comments. I'd love to see where you all stand.

I think it is a cost and time thing. I also think the policing of products has made people feel the need to be the 'perfect natural'. Rather than just finding products that work for you, sometimes the online natural hair community can make you feel 'bad' for using a product.
I also think there is a pressure to look like the curl you see rather than the curls you have. Natural hair is so varied and it is virtually impossible for all the products recommended to work exactly the same in my own hair. I think the community is tired, especially if something does not work right away, or in the same way they see from the influencer.
Natural hair people, like me, have so many different curl patterns in their hair. I had to learn that you might give me recommendations but that is all they are. I will do what works for me, because at the end of the day you cannot know my hair better than I do.

I've been seeing it too, but as someone with almost exactly your hair type (3B/3C and fine) we need to acknowledge our privilege in this conversation. Our hair is much more socially acceptable than someone with 4C hair, that's just the facts. Of course we have our struggles, but just not to the same degree. Similarly, I've found that I have a way larger array of products that work for me than my sisters with tight curls. Just something to think about.

I don't agree with your comment of privilege. We all have struggles about our hair, and even some of us 3c girls struggle with wanting looser curls as well. That is my struggle right now. We can't help what grows out of our hair. God made us the way he made us and making another person feel inferior for something outside of their control is just wrong..

@@gyrlonfilm As someone with 3c/4a Type 3 peeps absolutely have privilege. It is more societally acceptable ex: ‘good hair’ as well as more product choices, and hair versatility. Who was bullied into relaxing their hair? Mainly type 4 ppl. The entire natural hair movement was started as a revolution for type 4 ppl to reclaim and love their hair. Now that it has become oversaturated with looser-curled girls; those same girls who started this movement have been ostracized. Don’t be ignorant. Also not everyone believes in god and no one is shaming anyone.

@@kennedy2893 The word privilege being used for hair is ridiculous. Who measures beauty by hair? Why do we do this to one another? Aren't we supposed to love one another? Are you perpetrating what you hate with your comment? Is there not more to measure someones worth by than there hair? You may call me ignorant for my comment and bringing God into it, but honestly, examine the heart that deems someone privileged because of hair, something that is fleeting, that people lose. I think not caring about what other people think is what's most important. People today worry too much about what others think.

@@gyrlonfilm Or maybe just _actually_ listen when others try to educate you instead of getting defensive and deflecting because you're afraid you might be wrong and that makes you uncomfortable. Who measures beauty by hair? Society. Specifically *white* society. It's a long history that involves colonization but to summarize a long, complicated history: White people with power and a high standing in society have long dictated that if you don't have the "ideal" White European facial features, hair, and skin tone, that you are inherently "ugly", and that has dis-proportionally negatively impacted people of color, especially women of color-- but black women in particular, and white institutions have long made it "okay" to discriminate against the black community for the way they look. Specifically when it comes to black hair, particularly Type 4 "coily" hair, for many decades it was legal to not hire, to terminate from their job, or suspend from school black folks for wearing their hair "natural" instead of assimilating into a "European" look by pressing/blowing out or relaxing their hair until it's straight and is "acceptable" because of its proximity to looking more "white". The Natural Hair Movement was created specifically for Type 4 haired black folks, black women, to come together and celebrate the beauty of their natural hair. But of course because white people didn't like that they weren't being included in the "cool black thing", they whined like you do about "inclusivity", "loving each other" and other typical "All Lives Matter", "We're all one race; The human race" bullshit, and once again a black created movement had to make space for white people, and it once again like it has before, became over-saturated and refocused on the "ideal curls" like my Spanish 3A/3B hair, and now with more white folks with wavy hair and calling it "loose curls" coming in and taking more focus away from celebrating black hair. We *do* have a certain privilege for having curls that have become the "ideal" that the Natural Hair community has been pressuring each other to achieve, because more curly hair products are catered to us (unless they're still black-owned and haven't been bought by a large corporation with a white CEO that doesn't know the first thing about black hair, let alone curly hair), and we were never discriminated against the way black hair has historically been. Sure we might be teased for having curly hair or told by snotty peers that it was "frizzy and ugly", but we were suspended from class, passed over for a job, or even terminated from a job because it was considered a "distraction". The bill that recently passed to protect folks with natural hair from facing job discrimination/job loss or education discrimination from wasn't for us-- it was for black folks with afros, locs, bantu knots, head wraps... wearing their Type 4 coily hair naturally. White folks and non-black people of color-- but especially white folks, need to realize that we are visitors in the Natural Hair Community. The space we're taking up was never for us, and if we're going to be here, we need to due diligence to acknowledge that, be mindful of our privilege, and make sure we're not the focus of the movement. It was always meant to celebrate the beauty of black hair, and we need to make sure we're always doing that.

I think people are over feeling held hostage by their hair. They want something easy to care for with less time. They want convenience. They are tired of the stress of worrying about heat damage or color damage. They are willing to try different things and are willing to take the risk even if it's not long term. People aren't afraid of starting over any longer and that's actually liberating. The curly hair rules seems like bondage or imprisonment and people are freeing themselves of the fear of the possibility of damage hair.

I am dominican, born and raised, I started my curly hair journey in 2015 after moving to Florida, 7 years being curly and I still find myself believing that I would look better with straight hair and that for formal activities I have to wear my hair straight 😮‍💨 2 days ago I went to a funeral and of course I blow dried my hair, at the funeral I saw people with all types of hair, from wavy to type 4 hair and I was so mad at myself for still thinking that straight is fomal and curly its not… that same day I went to the salon and cut off 3 fingers , I also made a promise to myself to love or at least accept my curly hair for what it is, even if its frizzy, uneven curl patterns , not “juicy” enough or bouncy enough and just let it be.

I’m Dominican too, born and raised! We moved to Miami in 2005 when I was 13 and it was interesting because all the girls washed their hair everyday and used gel and my mind was blown. However, my mom always made sure my hair was blow dried and ironed. It wasn’t until I got married in 2020, when my husband (who is white/Spanish) kept telling me how beautiful I naturally am, and I started to kind of force myself to just wear my hair naturally curly (I have thick 3b/3c curls). It’s hard when my mom says things like “omg when are you gonna do your hair, you look crazy!” I still struggle sometimes and there are days I feel ugly because I look at myself in the mirror and I just feel like I would look and feel sexier with my hair straight. Sometimes I use a curling iron to change up my look and when the weather gets a little colder in the winter I’ll wear it straight again. I usually leave it curly during the summer and it’s honestly very liberating to be able to workout and sweat and not have to worry about my hair getting frizzy or wet! It’s funny because I get a lot more attention from people on the street with my curls (not that I’m looking for it, it just happens). It’s a process and it goes deeper than just hair, this is psychological and I hope that I am able to teach my future children to love themselves through and through. ♥️

I used to find plastic comb bristles in my hair from when they broke off the comb). I convinced my mom to relax my hair when I was 11, and it wasn't until I was 23 that I saw a picture of myself coming out of a pool, that I realized I actually have curly hair lol. I’m not over my natural hair, I am however over the “curly girl method”. I have reintroduced silicones into my routine now that my hair is healthy, and I was sulfate and silicone free for years. It was wonderful for a while but I got board and it was so much work trying to find products that fit into the rules. Now that I have reintroduced silicones, which opened up so many more product options, I’m super excited about my curly/wavy hair and have been trying so many products. I have found products I am in love with and fell in love with my hair all over again.
I do agree with the more affordable stuff. I don’t blame you or anything but I get excited to see more curly videos from all the RUclipsrs I follow, and then when I see it’s Curl Smith, or some other high end brand, I honestly just don’t watch those particular videos sometimes. Everyone is using the same products on RUclips and I cannot afford products like that and honestly if I could, I don’t know that I would even buy them because $28 for 5oz of product is a little ridiculous (yes I know it’s good quality).
Don’t give up on teaching about natural hair! So many times I have been tempted to give up, then I come on RUclips and see one of your videos pop up or one from someone else, and I am re-inspired to keep going. I have come to love my curly/wavy hair more than when I straighten it or brush it out. If it’s not natural, I feel like I’m not me ♥️

Stop wishing it was something else. Stop saying it’s not good enough. Stop saying it needs to be styled a certain way. Stop saying you don’t look as good. Stop saying it has to be a certain length. Stop it 🙄

I tried really hard to embrace my natural hair, but I just cannot. When you have more bad hair days then good, it just weighs so heavily on your self esteem. The only reason I don’t straighten it more often is because I sweat too much when I work out. But 90% of the time I don’t feel cute with my curly hair. I can do my same wash & go routine & my hair will come out different every damn time and that is frustrating. I’d rather wake up with my hair blown out & not have to worry about it then go thru the refresh process daily. And don’t get me started on dry time for a wash & go 🥲
When it comes to heat I think it’s all about balance. There’s a ton of ways/tools out there that can help minimize heat damage & get the blow out look without using a flat iron everyday.
But overall, I’ve been over my curly hair and nothing will change that 😕

I'm all natural (4c to be exact) but I don't blame other girls for relaxing.
We've been straightening our hair even way before the civil rights movement, meaning that we never had the chance to learn how to care for our real hair in its natural state.
It's almost as though we missed an opportunity to deal with our real hair the moment it was considered "unprofessional" to have natural hair at work. So we just had more experience in dealing with straight hair than our natural hair
I don't blame us for preferring straight hair cz we didn't have ALOT of experience on how to manipulate our hair easily and quickly too.
We're still learning people. So when u do decide to go natural, just take it easy and don't rush it.
Above all, remember that it's ok to make mistakes we're still learning.

I think people are over the “obsession” people have with having “perfect/healthy” hair. It’s restrictive and at the end of the day if you really need to … you can cut your hair! And as much as people try to deny it sometimes having your hair straight is just easier and you don’t have to use heat every day to maintain it.

I went from thinking I had to rewash my curls each time I wanted to wear my hair out, and that refreshing would only make them frizzy. I use Bianca's exact refresh method and now I can get a week out of my curls. If you're one of those scared to refresh your girls people, just try it and see. It is honestly a game changer.

The natural hair movement is not a fad. That is all I am going to say on this matter.
The natural hair movement is a SPIRITUAL JOURNEY to unlocking your mind from all of conditioning that forced you to start self-harming (by damaging your hair to look not like yourself) in the first place. We get so caught up in the maintenance of the hair when your hair should be the symbolic representation of maintaining your mind.
If you feel your natural hair has to look like an advertisement in order to be accepted....got more work to do on that journey.
If you feel your natural hair has to look like others natural hair in order to accept how YOURS grow out of your head....got more work to do on the journey.
You can backtrack and revert to old habits; indicative of your old mindsets and be back at the start of that journey later....
It do not end. The journey to mental liberation is in every curl.

I agree. There was a time where most of us were harassed or made to feel what we were born with was hideous and undesirable. Omg so glad you posted this, cause low-key, I was wondering the same thing. Especially when the whole series videos came out about “the natural community is toxic” and how “curly hair is too difficult and I’m over it.” I have come to terms that maybe (and big maybe at that) I will be a heat-trained natural and have a phase where I keep wearing hair straight, because why not? But you couldn’t tell me my curly hair isn’t amazing or that I don’t look stunning with it, because it grows out of my head, and clearly, God clearly intended me to have this beautiful, curly, healthy hair.
I just feel like a lot people are just going back to straighteners, relaxers, texturizers, and so forth because “it’s easier”. It’s not. It’s same amount of work when it comes to styling if you actually want it to look like something. And if you’re just straightening your hair, you still have to deal with all the tangles, and you have to be way more wary of the products and treatments you use to make sure you maintain the health of your hair, because if you don’t, it’s gonna break off.
Also, I get type 4 hair-especially thick type 4 hair-being harder to take care because it naturally tangles more due to being so curly and prone to shrinkage. And the natural hair community has made it seem like you have to do the most to take care of type 4 hair, which shouldn’t be such a requirement for the hair that naturally comes out of our scalps. I am glad that Black Girl Curls along with other stylists popularized the 30 day detox, because it taught us that our routines don’t have to be so long and complicated. Plus, they displayed this mostly on type 4 hair. Now though I disagree with a lot of the things they say and their approach to speaking to the public sometimes-the routine is spot on and in my opinion, has been blessing to the natural hair community, especially for type 4 naturals.
With all that being said, we need to appreciate our hair-it’s the only hair we got. It’s beautiful, and society has told us lies for years that it’s not, and we shouldn’t be so quick to fall back into what society has tried to brainwash us into believing. Also, why we’re at it, let’s get rid of some other misconceptions like, “only long hair is beautiful”, “only thick hair is beautiful”, “short hair is not feminine”, “if you’re hair is not super defined, it doesn’t look beautiful” and so many others that need to be addressed yo. But yeah, that’s my rant lol.
Bianca if you happened to read through this long thing, I wish you a peaceful, healthy, and happy rest of your pregnancy and a smooth delivery. I will miss your videos, but you deserve and earned the rest. And thank you for being an amazing curl friend to us all of these years and teaching us to love out curls and all the tips, tricks, and product recommendations! Love you so much. 💕

Then when I walk out the door in the humidity in 15 minutes it was all frizzy again. Time completely wasted. And don’t even get me started if it was raining outside. 😩 yes wash days take longer but I do them a lot less because I don’t have the build up on my scalp itching and driving me crazy or the excessive oiliness or dryness flat ironing was causing. I had almost lost all my definition from heat damage and it took sooooo long to get some back. At this moment in life I would no want to have to start over again. I’ve been natural going on 5 years and about 2 weeks ago I decided to cut my hair into a bob so that I can wear it straight or curly. I thought about it for months until I finally pulled the trigger. My hair was long and because of that I started to dread wash day and even found myself pushing it back causing me to wear it in a bun for days. It was just too much. People idealize LONG hair so hard that it’s almost taboo to cut it and I struggled with that. Truth is I couldn’t stand my long hair. The long routines, the styling and drying for hours. Only for it to last 2 days before it was up in a bun again. I started to feel insecure about not having my hair done but I just didn’t have time to wash it twice a week, style and all of that. I also have a 6 year old that’s a curly girl so you can only imagine the time I was putting into JUST hair. I would cry about it sometimes.
Cutting my hair was the best decision I made. I can wear it curly or straight and it doesn’t take me hoursssss anymore. I can wash my hair several times a week and dry it within a couple of minutes. This is what’s best for ME personally. I know there’s a lot of different hair types. People just need to figure out what works for them and stop comparing and idolizing other peoples hair, texture, lengths ect.
I understand that we just want to be our best healthy selves. But are we putting too much pressure into fitting in when it comes up to hair? It’s just hair. And one thing that going natural showed me is… we CAN always go back. That will always be an option that I’m not afraid of anymore. But what I won’t do is torture myself because of a stigma revolving around natural hair and what people will think.

I’ve had thoughts about this for a while since I’ve noticed the “ugh my hair” messages that play backdrop to this apparent shift in the curly hair community. Hopefully I can flesh it out a bit without rambling. Ok here goes:
    1. Effort. Curly hair requires so much effort and it creates a level of stress and overwhelming pressure that a lot of people don’t have time/energy/motivation/ability for. It’s not easy to maintain and to deal with regularly. I know for me, my hair is short and shorter curly hair does not bounce back as easily in between washes so even styling my hair everyday is always a “ugh how do I get my curls to fall properly again”. There’s nothing the community itself has done, but the realities of natural hair is that it takes work and if people don’t have the time, the energy, the capabilities - perming might be easier to go since there’s less they’d have to do to style their hair daily.
    2. Cost. I kind of feel like there’s this double-sided con happening between product lines preying on curly haired people and also this growing elitist/classist sphere with curly hair products. Let me see if I can explain. We know certain products aren’t good, and avoiding them is hard. The majority of the products that use good ingredients are expensive - even moreso do persons like me who live internationally and so I have to deal with mark-ups on products that mean I’m paying sometimes triple what US customers are. So there’s almost a level of privilege attached to being able to do curly hair “the right way”. And brands perpetuate it because of how much is charged for one products. And I get it. Things are expensive to make, but it doesn’t negate the fact that curly haired people need more stuff than others, so $30 on one item that’s only good for one step in the process…well, it’s a tough financial burden to justify. There’s pressure to spend hundreds of dollars to have products to do hundreds of steps. And if you’re not doing something in a routine, there’s this sense of “you’re not doing it well enough and you don’t love your curly hair enough” because I just can’t or don’t buy certain products. Yes silicone is bad, parabens are bad, all that stuff is bad - but some people legit cannot afford anything other than those drug store brands that have it. And yeah there are affordable ones that have good ingredients too, but do people have access to those? Because I, as an international person, do not. It almost feels like the “better for you” brands are pricing themselves into exclusivity. And yes they don’t need to be dirt cheap - but do they need to be AS expensive? I don’t really know, but I know the cost contributes a LOT to why people give up. They can’t afford the good brands, the bad brands are, well, bad and they’re often shamed for using them soooo they just stop.
    3. Shame. Piggybacking off another point, there is some shame people feel if they don’t do xyz while having curly hair. Not prepooing? How dare you. Not using oils? Blasphemy. Not washing your hair religiously every week? Terrible curly girl. There’s a lot of gate keeping that happens and if you’re not doing something another curly haired person is doing, then it’s not looked at as being an alternative way, it’s looked at as being the “wrong” way. So people just don’t do it anymore because they have been shamed into thinking their preferences aren’t “right”. A lot of methods are often given without the caveat of “what’s right for YOU” and are presented as “the” way.
I think the curly haired community started off well and did a good thing, but the natural hair world has become a bit lost in rhetoric and gatekeeping and comparisons and privilege that turn people off.

@@BriteBlaze I’m going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you were trying to be helpful but the tone in this comment ain’t it and is actually part of the problem. And some of what you said tells me you read but didn’t comprehend. “Get a hold of how much you’re spending”. Did you miss the part where I said that because of where I’m from, it is expensive to even buy the “cheaper products”? I cannot find one product that is less than $20 because of the markup so it’s not as easy as that. There are genuine reasons that people struggle and to try to invalidate that and make it seem like I am the problem rather than acknowledging the external factors is very insensitive.

I am definitely OVER IT--at least for now. I got Keratin treatment and a short bob haircut, and it's exactly what I needed.
There was never a nighttime routine that helped retain my wash n go. I stuck with blown out twist and braid outs. And that means you have to re-twist and braid them every night. Detangling my hair is a job (and part of that is putting it off too long because it's a job). I spent almost 2 years mostly doing mini twists, and I love them. But it's all just worrisome. I've been natural for 13 years.
I can usually cut my hair, or watch a video for inspo, or get my hair straightened (usually once every 1-2 years) or get a get a protective style (usually 2-3x a year) to take a break from my curls, and then I would be excited to get my curls back. But I went about 6 months without having the desire to go back. So I started looking into Keratin. I would not go back to relaxers. I straighten my hair every 2 weeks when I wash it. And if/when I'm ready to go back to curly hair, I will big chop! I've done it 3 times, and I love to big chop! I don't mind "starting over" because length is not a goal for me.
I haven't stopped loving natural hair or curly hair. I have 4a hair (well, the curls are looser now with Keratin). But I LOVED my 4a curls. I love the variety. I love the look. But the routine is no longer worth it. And I'm just at a point where I wanted to wear a short, straight bob. Not a wig. Not a weave. Not for 3 weeks. Every day, no fuss. I don't even put a comb in my hair most days. I run my fingers through it and part it. That's the place I'm in right now. That's why we call it a natural hair "journey!" ❤️

There's a channel called Two LaLa with these twins who have relaxed hair, and they've done keratin treatments over their relaxers. You can search their channel for their videos and Q/A's on it if you want more info. Hope this helps!😇

I wish I had never started getting my hair "hot comb straightened" as a child. I wish I had never started getting perms either. I met a friend who had come to Ohio from Conneticut, she was part Pequot Indian. Her hair was natural back in the early 80"s. I fell in love with her natural hair then. It took me another 15 years to fall in love with mine. We need moisture and less manipulation. I've seen natural hair do things that straight can't touch when it comes to styling. Everyone feels differently about the journey, and that is ok. I blew dry my hair for my vacation last month. did not like that my hair felt thin to me after so many years. I immediately starting twisting my hair up for vacation and I loved it. I did not worry about sweating, the heat (I wore hats also), but my twists were half up, and down, I did updos and buns. When I returned home I thanked my coils and kinks for the versatility and protecting my head from the hot sun!!! LOL

Either way it’s work, doing our hair is work period. Personally I believe that being natural is not expensive at all, currently I’m using shampoo, conditioner once a week and a leave in, then to refresh my curls/grow out my hair I’m using clove and rosemary water spray. I feel like gen z are the ones who are wanting to burn their hair. Let them do it they will learn in time just like we did.

Let’s keep it real. The type 2-3 hair women have co-opted the natural hair movement, which was at it’s core a movement to empower those with tighter curls or z - pattern women in society. Honestly speaking, hair like yours were always accepted in the black community specifically; hell, preferred. We are still natural but many of us feel left out of our own movement and are freeing ourselves from the endless videos that don’t represent us. Furthermore, I believe many of us have given up the old regimented rules and are doing what works for our hair. ***I’m prepared for the comments about how “jealous” I am and that I’m attacking her. That couldn’t be further from the truth. Just stating my opinion on the matter like everyone else. 🤷🏾‍♀️

    • @ajm935
      @ajm935 Год назад +2

THIS. This comment is EVERYTHING. Tbh texturism allowed it to be hijacked... ehem... but the original movement was supposed to be about leaving relaxers and embracing type 4 hair and learning how to care for our type 4hair (that many of us HAD NEVER EVEN SEEN BEFORE). Type 3 hair WAS NEVER A PROBLEM OR HATED ON in the black community!! I wish we had gatekeeped the natural hair movement and pushed the 3type & looser curl folks to start a separate "curl health & maintenance" movement...
Also I think the problem with the 4c girls is we have still been fighting our texture this whole time. I LOVE the @lipglosssss controversy because I think to TRULY accept type 4 hair we need to STOP doing twistouts and Bantu knots and just accept our curl pattern for what it is. That may be the next phase of the movement!

    • @sarahr.9118
      @sarahr.9118 Год назад +3

That’s the thing though. Although, according to you, type 3 hair has always been accepted in the black community, it’s not always accepted everywhere else. As a Tunisian (North African) who has 3b/3c hair, dealing with it has always been torturous. I used to have breakdowns as a kid because I didn’t know how to deal with it and most of the people around me had straight hair (either naturally or from heat damage because of all the straightening). Straight hair has always been the standard, it’s still widely considered the most beautiful. It’s been drilled into me since I was a kid that I should straighten my hair because it looks better that way. Heck even though my curls are beautiful now, I have family members asking me when I’m going to straighten it or when I’m getting a keratin treatment (that’s like our version of your relaxer I guess). The curly hair movement has made my hair and life so much better. I’m actually somewhat confident when I walk out the door. So although it was created by and for black people with type 4C hair in the US, I think it’s also important to consider that there are other people out there with different ethnicities and cultures who’ve struggled with their hair just as much. Maybe not because the hair is harder to take care of but because of the people around them and the society they live in. Although I agree that the lack of representation of 4C individuals is definitely something that needs to be fixed, the gatekeeping idea (comment above me) seems straight up selfish. You’re tunnel visionning on your community only. Even though it somewhat makes sense because that’s what you grew up in, it’s important to broaden your vision and consider other communities as well.

    • @DrKoko90
      @DrKoko90 Год назад +1

@@sarahr.9118 no offense but it wasn’t created for Tunisian women with type 3 hair. It just wasn’t. @@sarahr.9118 the fact that you refer to it as the "curly hair movement" perfectly makes my point. You guys still could have had a "curly hair movement" and left the "natural hair movement" to the type 4 girls. Not taking over one doesn't mean another couldn't be started along side. There is space for EVERYONE to have their own separate things! What makes this even more frustrating is the girls coming up now who are 4 type will be pressured back into straightening their hair again (relaxer videos are on the rise) if the natural hair movement completely dies. Black hair products have come this far ONLY because of the natural hair movement. If it goes away I guarantee there will be no swift advancements in hair care for us anymore.

Then it can go up in a bun, or left out etc. I use to focus on getting the perfect curl. So I would spend soo much time shingling, using a lot of products etc. the only thing that still takes a little time is detangling. No offense to them, it's their job to promote and you have every right to try something new. But if you aren't seeing results, maybe it's time to settle down with a product and stick to it.

@@betzaidaflores2477 Sounds great. An extra step because of the blonde hair is helpful, but extra steps for no reason aren't. I also use a bond builder about every 4 - 6 weeks because of the length of my hair the ends have been around for a while and need the extra attention. I'm sure I don't need that as often as you do, but it only adds a little time to the process. Yes, consistency is key!💜

For over 50 years I just thought I had bad hair. I am white with fine, 2c-3a waves. No one ever showed me how to style my hair curly/wavy and RUclips wasn’t a thing when I grew up. So of course I washed/blow dried/ curled or straightened my hair every day! I could never grow my hair past the top of my shoulders due to breakage. I found the curly girl method 3 years ago and now at 55 my hair is thriving and growing. I just recently dabbled with occasionally heat styling just for a change, but I will never go back to torturing my hair like that routinely. Thank you to you and the other creators that taught me to love my hair 😊

After almost loosing my curls back in 2019 from bleaching I am not going back! I haven’t seen my curls like this in years! It’s the healthiest it’s ever been! I’m so grateful for my curls!❤️

I've been natural since the spring of 1996, right before I graduated from graduate school with my master's degree. It was so freeing! I will never go back to relaxers or even texturizers, and I was never into wigs or weaves. Let's not confuse the type 3-loving natural hair community that is judgmental with those of us making our type 4 hair look so gorgeous. Bianca, I love your hair, and I never feel like you are judgmental against other hair types. I've learned a lot from you and others online, and I'm extremely grateful. Thank you!

I feel so confused about people saying natural hair is hard! I look at my mother, she spends at least 1 hour in the toilet daily or every second day making her hair straight (and then it gets damaged). I go out of the shower, put leave in conditioner and gel and I’m good to go. Or I diffuse for 10 minutes with my Dyson before going out. My hair is 3c. I really don’t get the problem 🤷‍♂️ it’s much easier than straight hair… 🤷‍♂️ and I personally find it much more beautiful. In the street everyone has straight hair and it looks mostly boring and badly taken care of…

I feel you. I’m type 4, and my mom always acted like my hair was difficult to do, but when I started doing my own hair, I didn’t think it was difficult at all.

I’m so thankful for you and your videos! My mom has straight hair and she used to brush my hair when it was dry. I would cry because it was a slow and painful process. I also dealt with mean comments about my hair, especially in middle school. But when I discovered videos by you and others my curls started to emerge from the frizz. Comparison is still so easy - a couple humid frizzy days can be a bummer when it feels like I’m surrounded by straight hair online and in real life. However, I am thankful and almost proud that I’ve stuck with my curly hair journey through the years (currently 23). And you are one of the people that I have learned from for years! I’m so thankful for your caring encouragement to embrace the curls God gave me and your practical advice about ingredients and products. I seriously have no idea how I would’ve figured out what works for my hair without you and other curly hair educators on RUclips.

Your videos are always so informative & genuine….and you do it gracefully. Honestly when I started my natural hair journey it was your education that enabled me to understand how my hair works….started my journey during pandemic 2020….everything was closed….since I couldn’t straighten my hair I decided to let my hair grow out…& went for the big chop in June 2021……chopped off all my stringy hair..(I can’t believe I walked out in public with that hair). My hair was soooo short….now in July 2022 my hair has grown to underneath my ears….
Thank you for all the information you share…..I won’t ever get a relaxer ever again….and you’re absolutely right the process is long but it’s so worth it. Can’t wait to have the length of your hair.
    Love & Light ♥️

I will say one thing, that since going natural is I DO spend quite a bit more time and money maintaining my hair than when I used to straighten it.

🤔 hmm interesting I never thought of that. I wonder if the hair product industry benefits from the natural hair movement than when we were mostly straight ?

I absolutely love my curly hair. I never knew I had such thick beautiful curls. I’ve been natural for 2 1/2 years and I will never go back. I started my natural hair journey after finding out I had breast cancer. After my recovery I never want to put anything in my hair or body that can harm either. Plus I never knew how much I would love my hair. My whole life my mother either relaxed, pressed or I had jeri curls. I always thought new growth was a bad thing to have. Now I know the difference.

Thank you for all the education you have done! I’m 50 and have straightened my hair less than 5 times in my lifetime. What has happened for me is learning how to correctly take care of my hair. I have actually gone back to products I used to use but now that I have healthy hair and I’m using them correctly they work great! It took 5 years for my hair to be healthy.

I'm definitely Team Curly!!! I've spent most of my life straightening and coloring my hair. When I found Ms. Bianca Renee and learned lots of "tricks" on how to manage my hair with products that were created for curly hair I was thrilled. I realized that I actually looked better with the hair that grows out of my head!!! So, thank you Bianca for all you've done to help me on my journey! My only suggestion that would help me is some advice on what to do with short curly hair. Keep doing what your doing!!!
P.S. Best of luck on the new addition to your family! ❤️❤️❤️
