railroading is DANGEROUS... so dangerous in fact, that rail workers way back when were considered uninsurable by the insurance companies, so the unions provided insurance... but the oldheads sometimes get hurt as well mostly due to complacency and the new hires get hurt because they just flat out don't know... kind of a catch 22, the new guy don't know so he gets hurt but then the oldhead who does know but just casually goes through the motions because he's done it thousands of times before gets hurt by not paying attention
I had just finished my 1 week training for a small RR. I was point protection, shoving 5 empty hoppers, to spot under a chute. The track was embedded in concrete. What I failed to see was iron ore had filled the depression by the rail. The hopper had walked off the rail but I didn’t feel it. The steel girders we’re getting closer and an opening appeared and I jumped off. The hopper crashed into one of the supports. Then the conductor came out of the locomotive and told me, I shouldn’t have been riding under the chute! There was supposed to be a sign that said, No riding RR cars beyond this point, but a truck must have knocked it down. He saw me on the car and should have stopped. What was really upsetting was the engineer was THE SAFETY MAN!!!! All the training was, hand signals, how to get on and off and how to couple and uncouple.
As a union carpenter you are always paired up with a journeyman a carpenter for many years will always trying to keep their apprentices out of harm's Way and trying to teach him the right way and the Safeway
First I’m gonna say I love your channel I am a subscriber. I love your content I refer people to your channel who are considering joining the Railroad. I have 15 years on the job I am currently a Locomotive Engineer. Your friend is very blessed to be here he got rolled more times than not people never lived to tell that story. Listen Up new hires if that sign says CLOSE CLEARANCE get off the equipment stop the movement walk it in Period. The life you save may very well be your own. I tell people all the time you can make a mistake at your job I cannot. On a good day it may cost me a arm, leg, finger, hand, foot. But on a bad day it may cost you your life. This equipment is Unforgiving Respect It…… Keep your head on a swivel at all times stuff happens quick out here.
Thankfully my buddy is doing well! His lawsuit was settled and he is enjoying retirement at 25 years old. Thank you for the kind words brother I know he appreciates it.
Yeah and that is my problem with the way that they do training now... 3 days on each local and your "qualified" on said local.... it should be at a minimum of a week on each job. Along with that it should be predetermined exactly what end your going to end up on instead of just bouncing all over the place!
That is automatic that you're supposed to stick with someone that is trained and you got to be aware of your surroundings. As a union carpenter you supposed to be partoned up with your partner that's been there a lot longer
I'm in ojt right now and actually some of the newer guys are the best ones to work with. They know what your going through because its still fresh. They remember the things that game them trouble and will help you with it.
I understand where you’re coming from cause I was that new conductor training guys. Just keep your head on a swivel if you’re going to go with them. Things can go wrong quickly.
hey, joey, another great video. Glad to see you back !.. Please take a moment to do a video on Night Work. I just heard also that the rail homeless are really aggressive--and a weapon on you is good common sense. Another thing is walking a stopped train as a conductor on -- wait for it--- river trestles at night( DAmn Scary!!!!). Thanks man!.
Hey Joey great great video..... that is very informative! Don't forget about the signals you did part 1&2 now we need to know about those restricted signals.
Thanks for the video! It’s crazy how fast things can go south on the RR. Glad your friend survived! Hopefully NS will take care of him and his family. Looking forward to more videos. Especially the hang test and part 3 of signals! I’m still waiting for a start date in Sheffield. Been 5 months since I cleared medical and background.
Another great video. I’m in the pipeline, had first video based questionnaire interview. App status says reviewing all applications as of now. Keeping fingers crossed 🤞 I really want another shot at this since CSX pulled the crap they did.
where would you be able to find the policy about the one year. starting my OJT in march 20th in Binghamton NY. would it be in the NS-1 or operating rules or will I have to wait till I get there to find out.
Yea I've seen them pull the garbage . Your buddy should have been in that guys back pocKet. Reckon how they got separated ?I understand he was crushed but living did he loose any limbs. I hate hearing that.
I didn't think you could fall back on the union when you're brand new, since you're on probation and not signed on to the union yet. Can you still call them if you have issues?
That’s what they want you to think keep in mind, you have a choice to make and if you have issues i would contact both unions and see who will fight for you cause they know if they do you’ll be signing up with them. They will still fight for you, regardless if you’re paying dues or not.
Hey question can you make a video about why do you need a drivers license to be a conductor maybe go through that Norfolk Southern manual book that you got if you could do that I appreciate it. PS the reason why I say because the railroad detective told me I didn’t
Wow your buddy is truly lucky to be alive and his family is lucky to have him still.
Thank you for sharing! I am starting the new hire process as a conductor at NS. Can’t wait to watch more of your videos!

Do you get anything extra when you have to train someone?
youtube edited my comment. please insert ....' a conductor may need to have a thing on him for things that happen along a lonely train walk...
Wish him a speedy recovery

Thank you for the advice waiting to hear about health evaluation and start day

On the Pre-employment clearance stage on what is hopefully a new career with NS. Your videos have been a major boon.
How long did it take for background come back.
Great video, very informative. Wishing a speedy recovery and rehab for your friend. ✊🏾
Thank you fire! I know he appreciates it.
Thanks for uploading these videos!
Extremely useful and informative video. Keep up the good work, brother.
Thank you Eric, I appreciate you taking time out of your day to watch this, Stay safe buddy.
There is also a rule where you have to be 10 feet next to your conductor at all times. If that ct was to stay next to his FO he would been ok

There or operations bulletins or general instructions if you can't find it three ask somebody

They’ll tell you to do something wrong then soon as something terrible happens they will politely sit it in your lap
@@christophersmith9476 tell ‘em Chris! Some of those trainmasters are snakes man. Gotta watch em.
