By now,
All too familiar. Everything I had ever lived.
The slow incremental steps to survival.
Striving thus far, here and now,
Retracing the life in books others before me
Had written.
They tell me in whispers
Go here and there.
Where the buried treasures were
And still are buried, stained in old blood.
The dead’s memories still wrapped
Around their bones.
I dug my mother up to be cremated.
She’s now ashes I rarely visit anymore.
I tell myself she’s gone and free now.
My heart still thinks of her so I don’t need
To visit her in a stupa of a temple.
I travel, instead, away from her as
Much as I can, avoiding her old country,
Where she gave birth to me.
I do go there, but only briefly,
Only to a point I can stand
For old sadness, old wounds, old
Sorrow and pain to resurface.
Only then, I’d run. I’d run to escape
Those who ho are still suffering
Under the current oppressive and repressive
Regime, whose hands are stained with blood.
The blood of greed and power.
These strong men and women
Out competing for Chinese Skyscrapers.
They’re building high.
Casino that burned and killed workers.
Casino that fired people and didn’t pay them.
The regime Family controls everything.
Including the forests and a profitable drug
Ring.
They are armed with American
And Chinese weapons to oppress
And suppress their own people
Who dare speak out against corruption.
Strong man is afraid that true democracy
Will try him a murderer.
His entire clan will be in jail for raping

From rivers and lakes for Singapore.
Lakes and rivers that are the lifeblood of

The poor are watching, accumulating
Grieves, mourning their dead, their
Teachers, heroes and heroines,
Activists, unionists, environmentalists,
Their democratic candidates of choice.
They will win. People’s power en masse.
Fists high. Sickles and machetes hand made,
Hand crafted and sharpened,
The young who witnessed the pain and
Suffering of their parents shall rise,
Even American nuclear bombs
Won’t kill them all, because they remember
They had been bombed time and time
Before. It’s a matter of time
for all familiar steps, greed and power
To oppress and suppress until
Their backs are against the wall
Without a choice but to die fighting
For themselves.
I leave hopeful for my mother’s grief
To get justice soon to flower freedom
For all.
