These restaurants and bars could be anywhere. I wanted to see what the city looks like, the streetscape, the houses, the parks, downtown, not just food and drink.
I agree. I’m tired of tourism these days always promoting “new innovative” restaurants and bars with the same trendy food and cocktails you can find anywhere from Brooklyn to Denver. Like once I read a travel article that said, when in New Orleans, don’t get Cajun/Creole food, head out to this trendy gastropub instead. I thought the point of travel was to experience something you can’t get at home. When in New Orleans, I’m there for Creole food, not the same stuff that I can find where I live.
I appreciate that it's not just another, "Wow! They serve sandwiches with fries *inside* the sandwich!" food video. If I'm traveling I want excellent food. I don't want a dorky sandwich.
What's yinz? I keep seeing that word. Are you near Boston btw? I grew up in NJ and really liked Boston, revere and areas nearby. I never lived there but I used to stay with my ex in revere
I'm from Pittsburgh. I've been living in Brooklyn for the past 10 years. I'm looking for reasons to move back because the cost of living is lower, but this video just made me sad. That bakery wants to make people feel like they're not in Pittsburgh? What's the point? That city still has way too much self-hatred. Pittsburgh seriously needs to go out and get stoned and drunk for a weekend. It needs to have a one night stand with New Orleans or a few beers with Berlin. Pittsburgh needs more happiness. It deserves it.
As someone who lives near "that bakery" (which also opened two satellite locations in other neighborhoods - one being blighted Hazelwood), I think your anger is misdirected. La gourmandine is a wonderful, French bakery. The video did not bother to explain this, but the quality and selection of french pastries and breads there is not found many places in Pittsburgh. Hence: "it doesn't feel like Pittsburgh [it feels like Paris or France etc].
Emily, as with anything in life, you get what you give, That also transcends into a positive attitude. I don't understand this self-hatred thing you brought up. I've been around here most of my life and I just don't see that. I've lived in Calif etc, but Pittsburgh has a great feel to it. If you don't live here currently, where are you basing your judgements? Maybe you need to stay where you are, it just isn't a place for you if that is what you see and feel.
I feel like this video didn't focus on the mainly popular restaurants in Pittsburgh . Like Peppi's, Primanti Bros., and more! I have lived in Pittsburgh my whole life , and the city has WAY more to offer than what this video shows.
My favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh is point Brugge, it’s not super we’ll known but I still kind of wish they showed it in this video. Everything about the environment of that place just screams “Pittsburgh”
I agree. This video focused on new things that were changing Pittsburgh instead of the core of Pittsburgh past and present. Reminded me like somebody wanted to relocate California into Pittsburgh. I do like new things. I'm not opposed to hipsters. But this is just a bad presentation of the city.
My wife is from Pittsburgh so we make it out to see her family about twice a year. Can't believe no mention of church works brewing or the macaroni store?! I have to hit those two spots every time we visit.
For anyone seriously interested in Pittsburgh you are watching the wrong video. Everything shown in this video is all hipster places. What was shown here is not real Pittsburgh. We have a lot nicer places to enjoy yourself at than these Hipster places trust me.
Donegal513 Cool. I know this is a late comment, but I'll be going to college there, so I appreciate knowing that it's not all what this video showed off.
Id Like to come and visit Pittsburgh one day, looks like a cool city (little too hipstery for my taste), but i heard there are a lot of Croatians living there. It would be a great expirience to meet all those people that are far away from home. Greetings from Croatia 🇭🇷🇺🇸
This is so stupid. No Fort Pitt, no incline, Pirates, Penguins, or Steelers. Forget the museums. Forget kennywood. This is the snobbish side of the city.
Pittsburgh is a sister city to my hometown (Sheffield, UK), both known for steel production- it would explain why they have an NFL team called the Steelers and we have a hockey team also called the Steelers
Was wondering what NYT would have to say about home. Found out that they had nothing to say about any of the things people would actually come here for.
Whaaaa? Hipster breweries and cuisine? You didn't go near the real Pittsburgh, such as the Strip District, Bloomfield and the "Sath Side". And not a mention of the Steelers, yet. Obviously this video was made by somebody with their nose in the air.
Pittsburgh has a Hell of a lot to offer. And yes, the South Side, The Strip District, and Bloomfield should have been mentioned. Why the Hell didn't they show The Smiling Moose during a metal show? {Buzz Killer}
you guys call it hipsters some people are looking to relocate to Pitt and cuisine and art are part of the whole experience. Pitt is in 5 of the cities I am looking at to relocate to, because I am an engineer and Pitt has a great job market for my area of civil/environmental engineering convince me why I should pick Pitt over sacramento, seattle, denver, or San francisco
I’m from Pittsburgh. This video is not the real Pittsburgh. I’ve never been to and never even heard of most of these places. This should be titled what hipsters and yuppies and trendies can do in Pittsburgh.
Favorite part was when that lady said, “I want people to walk in and forget that they’re in Pittsburgh” in a video about what to do in Pittsburgh.... terrible video
Yeah even though I've never been there I kind of got an eerie feeling from this video after one of the restaurant workers says, with pride and a completely straight face, that his restaurant was one of the pioneers of Pittsburgh's regentrification. Yikes man... these people don't give me a good vibe at all.
For some reason idiots think shoving poor people out to take their neighborhoods for cheap real estate so that hipsters can feel Urban isn’t a good thing
Gentrification is only gross when it happens in cities like New York where minorities something great out of it. I think it's great that it's happening in Pittsburgh, it's always been a fabulously white city.
this place is great...there around 300000 people in the downtown which is great cause traffic eases alittle than other city's and in the whole area there's around 1.7 million people living in Pittsburgh's urban/whole area
You seem to have an issue with people being in a video on the basis of their genetics. Have you ever wodered if you might be a piece of excrement? There was this Austrian dude once -- had a weird hang up on there being 'too many' Jews everywhere he looked ... In short: seek help, you piece of debris.
I think what they wanted to show in this video is, that Pittsburgh has a lot to offer, whether it's fine cuisine or just a great cheeseburger or the Arts. A City does not grow by the aging population, you want younger people to want to move here, and bring their fresh ideas and talents with them. It's not the City of old, it's grown as he said, and we now have Google here. among other leaders of the Tech industry, one of the best Universities in the Country, CMU, and probably one of the most diverse Cities with it's population and of course, you can find any kind of food your heart desires, and it's good food. If they would have depicted Pittsburgh looking like a hick town, I can't imagine what you would have said about that. If you don't like the video, I'd like to see you make one and show us how you would depict our City. Id be happy to watch it. Send me a message when you are done.
No mention of the Carnegie Museums of Art, natural History, the Hienz Regional History Mueseum, the Warhal Art Museum, the Science Center, the Planetarium, the Pittsburgh Ballet, The Pittsburgh Opera, the Pittsburgh Symphony, and St. Anthony Chapel which enshrines 5000+ relics of the saints...Only the Vatican has more. Yes it's a great foody city, but there's so much more. I see the comments list others.

I'm from New Jersey and we also say P.A. New Yorkers say it too. I'm not sure which other states call it P.A. But states that are further away just say Pennsylvania. PA is more of a local and neighboring states thing. I'm in Texas now and I always hear people talk about THE VALLEY. I think about the San Fernando Valley in California outside of L.A. when I hear that but they're referring to McAllen Texas. Another one of those local things
Although I enjoy living in Pittsburgh, I work in Local taxes I do not mean to insult but my goodness this state has the most taxes I have ever seen. You've got local taxes, real estate tax, per capita tax, the school district and if you want to work a tax for that Occupational tax. i don't know if I missed a few but man. Whoever heard of a state making a person pay to work? Each municipality has there own tax so sometimes one is higher than the other. Philadelphia has the highest I've seen so far..Never seen anything like it.
@@dasteelerfan1 that's not why people are leaving. People are leaving because Pennsylvania is in a transition phase where it's going from industrial to healthcare, robotics, white collar jobs. The people who are moving out are the people going to West Virginia or someplace that is still industrial
Horrible... nothing to do there but drink. That can be done anywhere, but thank God I don't drink, so that leaves very little to be desired of Pittsburgh.
not really, if you think theres nothing to do there but drink then you've been literally no where in Pittsburgh. I mean theres kennywood, the science center, the stadium i mean come on i can keep listing places to go to. Next time you want to criticize a city, learn about it.
They always try to show what people want to see. I left there 31 years ago and it looks like nothing has changed. It was always a city filled with racial prejudices. I am now in a city that also has racial prejudices against Hispanics. It is a shame that there should be this kind of prejudice in any city in the USA. I left but am in a climate where it is not humid, cold, snow, etc. All a person can do is try to associate with people, businesses, etc that are not full of prejudice. There is bad in all of us. Once you realize this the better off you will be. The bible tell us to "Love one another". The State of Pa is quite costly as property taxes and vehicle insurances are double or more than some cities in the southwest. Property values do increase but slowly. In the sun belt areas the values increase more quicky and your investment pays off. AZ is now the 2nd largest are in job development. Hope this gives you something to consider and think hard about.
What's-a-matter with knowing you're in Pittsburgh...?? I'd rather pass on that "kwasssss-ont" experience. 🙄🙄🙄🙌😅😅😅😅 Get me an foul-mouthed babushka making pierogis old world style anyday!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Pittsburgh has a long way to go before it becomes a world-class city. The population is still shrinking year after year...way more people are moving out than moving in. It's very hard to get direct flights to Pittsburgh from most U.S. cities and the Pittsburgh "International" Airport is a ghost town, they even had to close an entire terminal due to the amount of airlines dropping service into and out of Pittsburgh. Real estate is very cheap, however, so that's nice if you're in the market for a house in a small city that has brainwashed its residents into thinking that Pittsburgh is a wonderful place.
with you on that one. i moved here from new york city and i love it. you need a car in pittsburgh for sure, public transportation sucks, but the street lights got the motion sensors, so you wont wait long at street lights. South side is a great place to go out and have a drink, got 5 bars for one block radius at least. the city is growing, so there is alot of work available and population is ideal :), not as sardine packed as nyc is. i mean who likes to be rubbing on each other sweaty on the train full of people going to/from work. i did that for 13 years and i hated it, i chose pittsburgh to move to and i'm very happy. :)
NYT came to my neighborhood twice and did video about people and business who been there for no more than two years. They pass the rich history of the people who lived here 30-60 years. So any video by NYT I won't believe it's authentic of a place I've never been.
I grew up a 5min drive from “The Point” and was 3 towns away. Pittsburgh is small; its either the Smallest City in the US or the Largest Town in the US. Everything in this video is “New” which is fine but none of this is unique to PGH. (Its PGH not Pitt, Pitt is the U of Pittsburgh). If you want to experience Pittsburgh, you need more than 36 hours. If you only have 36 hours don’t just eat and drink your way through it. Check out Oakland for the Universities and Museums, Squirrel Hill and Shadyside for Architecture, The Strip District our open-air market, The Stadiums and the Andy Warhol Museum on the North Shore, Point State Park and the Fort Pitt Museum, the Fort Duquesne Incline and the views from the top of Mt Washington. Its always sports season in Pittsburgh, Hockey, Baseball, Soccer, and Football, so catch a game. The eating and drinking is how you refuel in-between tour stops.
The restoration and upgrading of deteriorated urban property by middle-class or affluent people, often resulting in displacement of lower-income people. In other words!!!wow
I like hipsters but why in every city they feel like they make the city better with there culture?! And that's what mainstream media go looking for! I just don't get it!
+2KGrind09 You've got to be kidding me. You're judging an entire city/region based on a single short video? That's a good way to miss out on seeing a great American city.
If you're interested in the crap in this video, please go to those places, but know you're not seeing Pittsburgh. You're seeing gentrified Brooklyn relocated to Pittsburgh.
Many Pittsburgh area steel mills were blown up decades ago . Only high cost specialty steels is made in the area, far away from the downtown area. Pittsburghis the Steel Citybecause of its past manufacturing,: now it is a robotic and technology powerhouse!
These restaurants and bars could be anywhere. I wanted to see what the city looks like, the streetscape, the houses, the parks, downtown, not just food and drink.
I've lived in Pittsburgh for 34 years and I've never even heard of most of these places. This video was in no way an accurate depiction of Pittsburgh.
Yeah, every NYT city video is like this
So take your family to the bars...Great idea. I am sure Pittsburgh has much more to offer. I just noticed who published this video, makes sense now.
I appreciate that it's not just another, "Wow! They serve sandwiches with fries *inside* the sandwich!" food video. If I'm traveling I want excellent food. I don't want a dorky sandwich.

Another mistitled RUclips video. Would have been better titled " Where to go in Pittsburgh and miss most of what Pittsburgh has to offer"
Pittsburgh is my city
love pittsburgh. lots of great communities. i like the cultural district but south side and strip district are pretty cool too.

Is there any places to go with kids in this city?

Nice video to begin the education and give small insight to Pittsburgh.
Now the city of Asylum is sweet.

SO FRIENDLY PITTSBURGH PA.

They never show the real city. It's always the hipster perspective. This is something I've noticed with the travel channel as well.

The first place I would be hittin’ up if I ever visited Pittsburgh would be the (Roberto) Clemente Museum. Followed by a trip to PNC Park.

Yikes man... these people don't give me a good vibe at all.
1:15 This dude proudly saying his restaurant helped to gentrify the city... when will people learn that gentrification is bad?
For some reason idiots think shoving poor people out to take their neighborhoods for cheap real estate so that hipsters can feel Urban isn’t a good thing
I really need to visit Yinsburgh
Lived there back in 07
Loved the city and made a few of my own vlogs of the museums. It was a fun 4 day vacation.

2:50 why these two ladies look like they're about to run the most progressive campaign Pittsburgh city counsel has ever seen...
I'm black and originally from Pittsburgh. Yet, it took 5 minutes before I saw a black person in this video. Hmm...
the black people have better stuff to do
and he was drinking alcohol like that is OK but they couldn't show a black person in education or health, science field?
I. Like. The. Food. It’s.
Gotta Luv the "BURGH"
When your a hour drive from Pittsburgh and don’t know why your watching this
i’m about to be going to college here ayee
theres honetly alot of stuff to do in pittsburgh its a pretty place
There are hipster breweries in Bismarck, North Dakota. Way to focus on our unique aspects.
i went to my first nfl game in 2014 it was good
"Regentrification"?!? grossssss
Gentrification is only gross when it happens in cities like New York where minorities something great out of it. I think it's great that it's happening in Pittsburgh, it's always been a fabulously white city.
WRONG.
Gentrification is gross anyway the poor gets crapped on!
Pittsburgh is a mixed home of all kinds! This city is opportunity to all who have the will of steel!
Firstname Lastname but New York City and Pittsburgh are both 25% black.
this place is great...there around 300000 people in the downtown which is great cause traffic eases alittle than other city's and in the whole area there's around 1.7 million people living in Pittsburgh's urban/whole area
wow my dad is on this
Wow, such a diverse city!
Pittsburgh is basically like an American version of Dortmund, in Germany
Pittsburgh demographics: 66% white
this video demographics: 96% white

Is there anything to do that doesn't involve food and beverages?

Real estate is very cheap, however, so that's nice if you're in the market for a house in a small city that has brainwashed its residents into thinking that Pittsburgh is a wonderful place.
Cheap and not a lot of people. How is this not a good city?
with you on that one. i moved here from new york city and i love it. you need a car in pittsburgh for sure, public transportation sucks, but the street lights got the motion sensors, so you wont wait long at street lights. :)
But it has so many subway stations! 3 of them!
Geshmake r
Detroit?
ermoso
NYT came to my neighborhood twice and did video about people and business who been there for no more than two years. They pass the rich history of the people who lived here 30-60 years. So any video by NYT I won't believe it's authentic of a place I've never been.
Definitely skipping Pittsburgh lol
Coming to JB
Hey yinz hipsters come check out Pittsburgh Unfiltered where Pgh is keeping it real
What about south side and the strip district and kennywood and the museums and Heinz field. Visit those places they're better.
To increase your risk of cancer, move to Pittsburgh ❤️
There is a lot more to do in Pittsburgh than waste money on generic bars and restaurants found in any other city in America.
Everyone needs to remember that this is what the New York Times thinks is noteworthy about Pittsburgh. Who cares what those jagoffs think?
Pittsburgh sucks lol, I live here atm b/c of work. Nothing fascinating tbh, I’m coming from a bigger city though. Houston to be exact.
some diversity would be nice.....doesn't make me want to visit
Michael Madore luckily I know a guy from pitt & tells me about the "hip" side of town & where to visit
+2KGrind09 You've got to be kidding me. You're judging an entire city/region based on a single short video? That's a good way to miss out on seeing a great American city.
+RandomPlayIist this is one of the rare Pittsburgh vids I've seen so I was unimpressed with the "gumbo with no flavor" aspect as they say down south
+2KGrind09 i hear there is a huge black community in pittsburgh
+infoguy1978 can't tell by this video, it looks white as flour HA
If you're interested in the crap in this video, please go to those places, but know you're not seeing Pittsburgh. You're seeing gentrified Brooklyn relocated to Pittsburgh.
Steel Mills. Haha. WHERE???
Many Pittsburgh area steel mills were blown up decades ago . Only high cost specialty steels is made in the area, far away from the downtown area. Pittsburghis the Steel Citybecause of its past manufacturing,: now it is a robotic and technology powerhouse!
