  • The Lyman Filament Extruder V3 is a complete system for extruding filament and winding it onto a spool, ready to use in 3D printers. It is still a work in progress. I expect to add a resizing die or finer tolerances when I get it figured out. It will soon be uploaded on Thingiverse as it is open source.

    Absolutely incredible design ! I love how compact and somewhat simple it is, in comparison with other machines with the same functionality. What is even more astonishing is that this design is almost 8 years old and it is still looks and performs better than the modern ones !

    Love the simplicity!! This is the type of extrusion device. That should be shown in elementary, junior and high schools. The first time I saw an industrial extruder I was hooked....

    You can use your current extruder, just add the additional assemblies.
    Right now the tolerance is about +/- 0.10mm. I hope improve that with a resizing die. A manual is about finished.

    Personally I don't think you need any wire management. neat, sensible, visible wiring like yours is easier to maintain over time than tightly harnessed wiring. you have no vibration issues to protect against.

    Sir, I guess you are working on some way of electronically counting the length of the accumulated extrusion to eliminate the fishing reel threading step. Is it feasible to push the extrusion along a V channel into a receiving aperture in the hub of the spool which would begin to wind when a sensor detects it? I am envious of your skills.

    Does the water cooling rig cause any issues with the filament produced? I was under the impression that ABS / PLA filament was extremely hydrophilic and water / excess moisture would make the filament brittle and awkward.
    do you have to do some kind of post-processing on the spooled filament to remove the excess moisture?

    • @tylerthill982
      @tylerthill982 10 лет назад +2

      It absorbs water over a Long period of time, but a quick bath flash cools the plastic and the excess water evaporates with the leftover heat in the filament.
      On a different note, water on the surface of pellets going Into the extruder will produce potholes and ramen, due flash boiling of the water at the point of extrusion.
