In the sixties you could buy a cue with a dial on the butt that had all the colours of the balls on it , all you had to do was dial the colour you needed to pot and 99 percent of the time it would do as you asked, I wonder what happened to that cue manufacturer.

Liked that and I'm sure you could clear the colours with the halfbutts if you wanted to. When it comes to cheap cues I always feel one piece is better. Sometimes the cheaper joints can ruin the feel and even have an effect on solid contact. They always seem to be lightweight also.

Please could you also comment on ‘feel’ and feedback from this cue. Many say you need a one piece cue rather than jointed; and if jointed a 3/4 is better than 1/2. You didn’t seem to feel any negative points on the playability with the challenge successes!

yes, the sound of the strike was more hollow sounding and not "as solid", but the sound doesn't make the shot. Good observation. This video proves what I have been seeing and saying for a long time - the price of the cue has very little effect on how good you are going to play.

I fins these tutorials very helpful for reminding even seasoned player's that the basics are as important as the all the fancy flash shots a good/better player makes. Calmness focus and consistency is the key to every aspect of this sport. Forgot to mention i use my grandfathers cue. The only modification i did was to drill and insert a steel bar into the butt. As i found it a bit light and unbalanced. It also helps me with power through the extra weight

      Good tip essential
If I have to play with a house cue I will make sure it's straight and a good weight
Then give the tip a scuff up with a scuffer

  • @TomCoppell

There should be more coaches like you Steve. The cue itself is overlooked especially the value of the cue. Many players myself included, when reached a higher level in all areas, break building, long potting and safety thought if I get a stiffer shaft with a nice grain then it would give me that edge with increased cue power. And even though it does help with some cue power, no one else would be able to play with it properly other than me since I’m using my own technique and cue action along with timing the shot well with very little effort. So you’re very right the technique and the way you time the ball as opposed to hitting at the ball is true, very important and also when you’re in amongst the balls you don’t need that much cue power it’s mainly about the player concentrating, cueing in a straight line and keeping close control of the white. I once purchased a woods cue from China while my original cue was undergoing repairs and on the first day it got delivered I could play every shot and made a 63 managed to split the pack nicely. Wasn’t the best for smoothness but it did the job intended in order to play properly 👍🏻 Very informative video dispensing from the myth you need an expensive cue to improve your game.

    I bought my cue 2nd hand in a brick-a-brac shop for £5.
It's basically a "house" cue you'll see on a rack. I use a 9mm elkmaster tip. Probably worth about the fiver I paid for it. I knock in decent breaks ranging from 40s up to 60s and 70s most of the time I play. Not every frame but most of the time I play. A decent cue helps but a great technique with an average cue will get you through. All depends how serious you want to play really.

I agree that you can play decent snooker with an average cue. It does help if the cue is the correct length, though. For years I was using a cheap (30 € I think) ROS 2 piece 57" cue , but I just felt it was too short for me as I'm 6ft3". I recently bought a cheap enough 59" Ton Praram III Begin cue for around 160 € and the extra length and just the feel and quality of it has given me the confidence to play even more consistently and I can see improvements every time I play. Great videos as well, by the way! Yourself , Barry Stark and Break from life have given me many tips and guidance over the years!

My grandad played for years with a cheap 2-piece cue. I inherited it from him when he passed away a few years ago, but I've only used it once because the tip isn't great and I'm not sure how to replace it without damaging it. A new cue (even a cheap one) would be nice, but I don't live in the UK and I expect you don't want to pay to ship it abroad? (I image the shipping would be more than the cue itself xD)

I can think of a few reasons and you need to test which one or more contribute to your situation. 1) any of the bridge hand, shoulder, elbow, one side or two sides, or your eyes, head, moved when the cue is delivered. 2) Your vision is not properly aligned with the line of aim, though you think it is. 3) your body and limbs are not in a proper form that allows you to cue straight. 4) Vision and form are not aligned when slight adjustments are made after bending down for the shot.

When playing a shot. What’s the last ball you look at. The cue ball or the object ball?? Thanks Ben

The £10 cue worked well but I’m not convinced a free one would in my hands 🙃

cheers Steve, yes you can get hung up about the cue every day in the club, but the real answer is getting a great technique and a positive attitude , and the rest will eventually take care of itself. The cue looks ok too!

During the colour clearance, the sound of the tip touching the white is quite different to your cue I suppose, so the „click“ sound I mean 🤔

I have watched several of your videos and I am improving little by little, every time I play I make outstanding long shots and banks and yet miss easy shots.

What sort of balls do you use for consistency? Would you advise purchasing a set?

I just want to ask you how will this cue work when we will play the deep screw on a long pot?

I've got a US$100 cue, managed to get the deep screws, long ones, but not the consistent breaks, which is the hardest part of the game :)

I used to play with a cue which was broken in 2 places,1 near the tip and the butt was also broken..even my tip was broken and shredded and i could see the surface of the top end of my cue beneath the tip... but there was no issue whatsoever in playing and potting all sorts of balls...all it's about is the technique and nothing else
