  • Are you a new swimmer or not too confident in the water? Breaststroke is a fantastic first stroke to learn and is easy on the joints if you have any injuries (especially shoulder or back injuries). It is also great for new swimmers or swimmers that don't yet like to put their face in the water - this stroke can help you get used to floating and moving under your own steam, ready to practice with your face in the water.
In this video, Adam covers the basics of breaststroke arms, some common problems, and how to add power to the stroke. This is part 2 of 3 in our breaststroke series - check out our swimming basics playlist for the legs and full-stroke videos.

Some coaches teach high elbow pull (fingers facing the floor of the pool) engaging lats instead of the pull you are showing. Can you please clarify which is better ?

This can cause excess rotation in the shoulder and cause drag when returning the hands to the neutral position. Better to not fight the water and keep as efficient as possible, to ensure a sustainable stroke over hundreds (or thousands) of repetitions

Some coaches say you should not go wide with your arms...make it a small circle in front??

Yes as I mention, we don’t want to create too big a circle in front of you. A reasonable size, but definitely don’t let your arms go behind your shoulder line when pulling back! 👍

The pull he is showing is much better.
