Thanks for this video, Chuck! I bought a VPC1 last month and am loving it! The action reminds me of my Yamaha C3 grand piano in China. I will consider getting a Korg NanoKontrol 2 to go along side it to do pitch bend and modulation, ETC. I'm quite satisfied as a classical pianist to have the VPC1.
I am building up my studio. I have been playing piano since I was 3 (am 38) classically trained, but love hard rock and metal. Started a band with a friend of mine doing symphonic metal/industrial/neo classical, never looked towards Kawai. Tried a digital grand by Kawai, I will never look towards a different manufacturer of digital pianos aside from Kawai. I was sold. Have played Yamaha, Roland, Kurzweil, NONE of them felt like Kawai. Have played Baldwin, Steinway, Kawai (acoustic grands), Young Chang (hated those pianos), even got to play the Horowitz Steinway when it came to MacPhael in Minneapolis Minnesota in the early 90's (the Suzuki teachers got to pick their best students to do a recital on that piano, I didn't understand what an honor that was until years later). Granted, the digital grand had a 20,000 dollar price tag (going to be a number of years before I can even consider it), but looked at the ES110. I really wanted that digital piano as it felt like the digital grand (and was relatively cheap), all I have had to play on was a Korg Triton Pro X and Korg SP200. Kawai is in a total other dimension as far as action of the keys, I couldn't believe it! Now, I think I am sold on the VPC1, editing the action, powered by the computer, not crazy about the weight though...I have a composer cloud subscription from EastWestSounds, I think the VPC1 would be great to practice on. I am sold on it despite the weight and price tag. Wish I could try it out somewhere...for virtual analog synths, Native Instruments S61 or S88 (don't want an 88 key controller for playing analog synths or virtual electric guitars and basses, don't see the point), and for drums/percussion Native Instruments Maschine. Decisions decisions...
Hello Chuck! Thank you for your videos! I have a couple of questions. Do I understand correctly that the external velocity editor of the VPC1 does the same job as any velocity editor built in the VST, for example the one in Pianoteq? And if the VST Plugin doesn't has a velocity editor then it would be enough to connect a customizable "Velocity Editor Plugin" between the MP11/VPC1 and the VST. So even with the MP11 it would be possible to customize the velocity layer as with the VPC1, same configurability. The difference is then mainly the action (and of course the buildin sounds + Wheels of the MP11). On the other side if I connect the VPC1 to a modern computer (e.g laptop with SSD) which I leave in suspend mode when not in use then the power-on time would be almost immediate as with the MP11. Correct? Could you say why do you prefer the action of the VPC1?

Hi Chuck, Nice reviews! I want to learn piano and I'm pretty tech savvy. Been debating with myself about the best instrument to learn on. Anything will probably do to start on, but I want a real grand piano sound. I'm considering the MP11 and thought about virtual piano software too and lo and behold you have review of the VI labs Ravenscroft 275, the VPC1 and MP11 and pretty much everything I'm considering. The VPC1 comes with a triple pedal. Does the MP11 also or is it an added expense? I also wonder if Kawai will soon have a VPC2 with the upgraded action like the MP11? Would then be a tougher choice? Thanks.
Hi Chuck - Great review, as usual. I have really large hands and long fingers, and would, all other things considered, prefer the longer key lengths of the MP11. However, my decision is between the MP7 and the VPC1. I'd likewise prefer the wooden keys and (I assume) somewhat longer key length in the VPC1 over the MP7. I don't see gigging with either one of them due to weight and not wanting to scuff the unit up while gigging (maybe a Casio PX5S for that....). I have a computer and a couple of sampled virtual pianos, which sound fantastic. I've heard that the digital piano sounds generally are not as good as virtual, sampled pianos. What are your thoughts on this, specifically regarding the Kawai sounds? Also, which would you chose (VPC1 or MP7), and why? If I don't gig with an MP7, why not get the VPC1 for the same money? I don't need the pads, etc. Doesn't the MP7 have an even stiffer back of the key issue? Thanks, Jeff
I'm looking for a new controller, I think the VPC1 is beautiful and simple. I also like that the weight is less if I need to transport it to a gig. Like you I also really like the idea of just having to turn one thing on and have access to sounds right away as it is with the MP11, and like I have with my Yamaha P80, which I'll be replacing. I think psychologically, while practicing just having an empty space with no buttons of any sort will be a relief. For control of a iMac soundsource I'll be using I can just have my iPad at the piano perhaps on a small shelf under the keyboard.. To sum up Weight is an issue the VPC1 winds here.. Price is quite a lot more at initial outlay, this is major consideration.. also the VPC1 Aesthetics, no electronically buttons when practicing for hours, is a real plus as buttons no matter how well designed eventually become dated. While keys and a smooth black surface is timeless.. VPC1 I might still consider the MP11 given the funds, or if I was doing a lot of Gigs and I had roadies to do the heavy lifting, That improved action is also enticing.. Wade Mattson Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Wade. It sounds like you've made up your mind already, and the VPC1 is something you won't be needing to replace for a long time (and there's no built-in sounds to give you the desire for something better in the future).
PianoManChuck That's right, a pure controller is a more permanet piece of gear, and the price of the VPC1 for what is purportedly the best keyboard action on the planet right now seems very fair indeed. It will still be while before it finds it's way into my studio... But I'm just going to concentrate on my money temple and it might happen sooner than you think!

I am new to digital pianos and trying to wrap my head around the velocity curve issue. From pianoteq's website it looks like you can set the velocity curve of the mp11 how you like. Is that the same as what you can do with the vpc-1 controller from kawai?
Does the VPC1 have wood keys? Does the MP7 have wood keys? or does the MP7 have plastic Keys? Does the MP7 action fell the same as VPC1 ?? (except for velocity editor of VPC1?)

R. Marteijn What I use for speakers/amp are irrelevant to what you hear... the recording is made from the board's line out's to the computer's line in's (via audio interface).
Hello Chuck, I would like to know if you have tested italian controller Numa Nano, if its keys' sensibility are closer to an acoustic piano than the Kaway VPC1. Thank you!
TurandotFanatic Apples & Oranges. Numa Nano is using a Fatar TP100/R action. As a professional pianist, I can't take Fatar actions seriously, especially when compared to Kawai's RM3/II action in the VPC1.
I'll read/study more about Fatar TP100/R and RM3/II to understand better what you're talking about. I'm lay on these technologies. By the way, which technology does Casio digital piano use?
TurandotFanatic Casio uses their own proprietary technology. If you're lay on these technologies, asking about which actions a keyboard uses won't do you nearly as much good as getting to a retailer and trying them out for yourself.
PianoManChuck You're right. Until now the most sensible keyboard, closest to an acoustic piano I've ever experimented was an Numa Nemo controller (that's why I asked about it). I've experimented some Yamaha and Casio digital pianos, but to me the keys are lighter than I expected. Well, I will continue my search. I greatly appreciate your help.
MP11SE is best. You absolutely feel the difference. Yes, it s sad that it costs 1000 dollars more, but the action is much better. The VPC1 Action is slower/heavier. Btw: the internal sounds of the pianos of the mp11se sound reaaaaallly bad compared to good Piano VSTs like Keyscape.
How does the key touch weight (downward) compare between the MP11 and VPC1? E.g. grams of weight to trigger a note How does the touch weight vary across the keybed? E.g. fixed or varied from lower to upper keys
Thanks for the comparison Chuck. I am in the market to add another digital piano to the studio. Currently I have a Nord Piano 2 and love the sounds. However, I really love the feel of the Kawai keyboards and their piano sounds as well. I have had a chance to play some of Kawai's grands and they are just fabulous. With that said I also have to think what potential clients want or need for sounds and feel. I would love to hear your take on the Roland RD800 as compared these. Thanks for all you do! Thanks for the comment, Greg! The only experience I had with the RD800 was at NAMM earlier this year... I was impressed by the action (nowhere near what Kawai's action is though) and disappointed with the piano sound. However, this was at NAMM... only through headphones in a crowded, noisy room. If I can get Roland to send me an RD-800 for 30 days to review, I'll be happy to review it, but so far they're not responding to my requests.

Hi Chuck, I just wrote you my appreciation on the MP 11, ES8 comparison, so I won't repeat my remarks. There is one comment here that blows my mind, however. You say you would pick the RM3 action over the GrandFeel if it was solely a matter of actions because of the velocity configurability on the VPC1. I know you love the 11, and I just bought one here in Istanbul yesterday ( no se available here). I played the VPC1 as well, and the action there is closer to the MP7se, in my opinion ( I've been playing a Steinway B for the last thirty years and the 11 is a lot closer to that than the VPC). So what am I missing? Does the configurability really take the VPC beyond the GrandFeel? Very hard to believe from my personal experience. I hope you will have time to answer this. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you somehow. Happy holiday and I hope you will be around to review the MP20!
@Michael - thanks for your comment here. I am classical pianist so value your opinion. I have a VPC1 and am considering the MP11se. I use Pianoteq 6 pro so only really need the action side of things. I would pay the extra to have the best action. I have a Feurich 179 grand piano too and feel the VPC1 is not quite at the level of a real piano. I used to have a Studiologic Fatar Numa 88. This was a bit heavy but I liked the fluidity it had. In fact it was like a patent Blüthner grand action.
What is the point of ability to set custom velocity curve per key, without provided software for analysis of your performance to gather stats, feedback, etc.?!

It's probably pointless to give you an answer 4 years later, but maybe someone else will find it useful. In terms of action, yes, the VPC1 is closer to the MP11 than the MP7 is. In terms of other functionality, MP11 and MP7 are more similar. Though the MP7 can actually do a lot more than the MP11. All of this is also true for the newer SE models.

@@klkdc In the format of stage pianos, it's still the MP11 and MP11SE. The Nord Grand you're probably talking about uses the Kawai action also used in the MP7 and ES8.
HI Chuck- I very much appreciate all of your reviews and insights...Unfortunately finding one of these to play and check out in a store has a bit challenging. The nearest I have been able to play in a local showroom has been the MP10 and an ES7[which I believe has the same action as the MP7, and it was impressive].Given the weight of the the instruments for portability and all other factors has me leaning towards the MP7, but if you have any other comparison comments between these, I would be grateful to hear them. I really wish I had all 3 in front of me to truly decide. Thanks.
ttp911 The weight of the MP11 is definitely a problem for the performing pianist... the MP7 is a great all-purpose stage piano at a decent price too (I would definitely consider one)! If you want a nice keyboard action AND all-purpose stage piano at a lower weight than the MP11, try out the Yamaha CP4.
That $1000 price difference is a HUGE problem. I don't gig, so I will get the VPC1 and then there are about a million different ways to high really high quality modeled piano sounds. For another $1300 I can get Roland FA-06 and have access to 2000 sounds from the Integra sound module, just for starters.
For $1300 and option would be this combo. A used YAMAHA Motif Rack XS (800-900) , and a used Triton Rack (400-500). The XS has great pianos, e.Pianos, acoustic guitars, etc ... and the Triton sounds like your in another galaxy!
While the MK22 action may be 'professionally regulated' by a master, at the end of the day its still a Fatar action. VPC-1 uses true wooden keysticks (similar to real acoustic grands)... and for an extra $4k you can get those professionally regulated by a master at Ravenscroft pianos which is fully approved/authorized by Kawai. Fatar produces general purpose actions of varying degrees... Kawai produces professional actions in pianos used in concert halls, acadamies, schools, etc.
+Janarth Dhayalan The VPC1 is not a sound source, but a MIDI controller. You plug your headphones into the sound source, whether that be a laptop running a VST, an external sound module or whatever.
tbh I'd rather adapt to one specific (sound) characteristic than have unlimited control. The MP11 looks outdated and "freaky" to me. And for the VPC 1 I dislike that is doesn't have a flat surface, and und for some reason unknown there is no VPC 2.
Well what should a VPC2 have then? Some products need no updates if they are finished. Ok maybe revision 3 of the action. But I would rather love to see a mix of both. I am not even sure if the little bit longer keys of MP11 maybe give it even a little bit more realistic grand piano feel, not sure. But a mix of tboth: That would my choice. That the VPC has NO wheel or not just even 3-4 buttons make me nervous because that means I ALWAYS need 2 88 keyboards in the studio.
@@nepomukism A flat surface would be nice. But as I never saw or used any of these products, there's little to say. On the other side, I would clearly dislike a wheel, as I would consider it as a Piano only. So it is a matter of taste, obviously.

I just sold my Yamaha acoustic upright piano because I need to downsize due to an impending move. I am looking for a stage piano with a great action that I can use for practice at home as well as for recording (both classical and pop, since I write my own songs as well). I would also like to use the piano for occasional performances (2-3 a year). I'm considering the following: Roland RD 800, Yamaha CP4, Kawai MP7, Kawai MP11, Casio PX-5S, and now also the VPC 1. What would you recommend out of these and why? I have called many retailers but none of them carry stage pianos. They only carry workstations which I am not interested in. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
If you play mainly classical, buy VPC-1 and a good piano VST (Ravenscroft, CFX, Galaxy Vintage D or Vienna Imperial). If you play primarily rock and metal, get RD-800 or get a used RD-700NX (I think the latter sounds a little better).

I think ideally a serious pianist with an interest in producing fully realized songs needs two keyboards: a VPC 1 and a fully featured midi controller.
Serious pianists have produced fully realized songs with just an acoustic grand piano and their voice. There's also many solo piano songs and albums produced with just an acoustic piano - nothing else.
There is another reason to conceder the MP-11 over the VPC-1. The fact that the keys are easier to play as you go in the key (like a piano) means you will be more likely to go in and reduce the chance of injury to your wrists. If you don't go in then your wrists are forced to twist more and twisting is a major source of pain and injury for pianists.

R. Marteijn What I use for speakers/amp are irrelevant to what you hear... the recording is made from the board's line out's to the computer's line in's (via audio interface).

Would you say that the MP11 may have better grand piano action fell because the key action is about an inch longer than the VPC1?

TurandotFanatic Apples & Oranges. Numa Nano is using a Fatar TP100/R action. As a professional pianist, I can't take Fatar actions seriously, especially when compared to Kawai's RM3/II action in the VPC1.
I'll read/study more about Fatar TP100/R and RM3/II to understand better what you're talking about. I'm lay on these technologies. By the way, which technology does Casio digital piano use?
TurandotFanatic Casio uses their own proprietary technology. If you're lay on these technologies, asking about which actions a keyboard uses won't do you nearly as much good as getting to a retailer and trying them out for yourself.
PianoManChuck You're right. Until now the most sensible keyboard, closest to an acoustic piano I've ever experimented was an Numa Nemo controller (that's why I asked about it). I've experimented some Yamaha and Casio digital pianos, but to me the keys are lighter than I expected. Well, I will continue my search. I greatly appreciate your help.
MP11SE is best. You absolutely feel the difference. Yes, it s sad that it costs 1000 dollars more, but the action is much better. The VPC1 Action is slower/heavier. Btw: the internal sounds of the pianos of the mp11se sound reaaaaallly bad compared to good Piano VSTs like Keyscape.
How does the key touch weight (downward) compare between the MP11 and VPC1? E.g. grams of weight to trigger a note
How does the touch weight vary across the keybed? E.g. fixed or varied from lower to upper keys
So the keyboard of the vpc1 is heavier than the mp11? which of the two approaches a real piano? thank you

Thanks for the comparison Chuck. I am in the market to add another digital piano to the studio. Currently I have a Nord Piano 2 and love the sounds. However, I really love the feel of the Kawai keyboards and their piano sounds as well. I have had a chance to play some of Kawai's grands and they are just fabulous. With that said I also have to think what potential clients want or need for sounds and feel. I would love to hear your take on the Roland RD800 as compared these.

Thanks for the comment, Greg! The only experience I had with the RD800 was at NAMM earlier this year... I was impressed by the action (nowhere near what Kawai's action is though) and disappointed with the piano sound. However, this was at NAMM... only through headphones in a crowded, noisy room. If I can get Roland to send me an RD-800 for 30 days to review, I'll be happy to review it, but so far they're not responding to my requests.

Thanks for this video. It's been almost 8 years now and the VPC-1 has still not received an update (apparently those in power at Kawai obviously don't think the niche is big enough). How would you rate the VPC-1 offer vs. newer alternatives these days?

There is the studiologic numa x piano gt. I want to know the difference between this and that one. They claim to use mechanical escapement as well.

There is one comment here that blows my mind, however. You say you would pick the RM3 action over the GrandFeel if it was solely a matter of actions because of the velocity configurability on the VPC1.
I know you love the 11, and I just bought one here in Istanbul yesterday ( no se available here). I played the VPC1 as well, and the action there is closer to the MP7se, in my opinion ( I've been playing a Steinway B for the last thirty years and the 11 is a lot closer to that than the VPC). So what am I missing?
Does the configurability really take the VPC beyond the GrandFeel? Very hard to believe from my personal experience. I hope you will have time to answer this. Perhaps I am misunderstanding you somehow. Happy holiday and I hope you will be around to review the MP20!
@Michael - thanks for your comment here. I am classical pianist so value your opinion. I have a VPC1 and am considering the MP11se. I use Pianoteq 6 pro so only really need the action side of things. I would pay the extra to have the best action. I have a Feurich 179 grand piano too and feel the VPC1 is not quite at the level of a real piano. I used to have a Studiologic Fatar Numa 88. This was a bit heavy but I liked the fluidity it had. In fact it was like a patent Blüthner grand action.
What is the point of ability to set custom velocity curve per key, without provided software for analysis of your performance to gather stats, feedback, etc.?!
As a professional pianist, I certainly don't need any kind of software to tell me what key(s) I'd like to change the velocities of.

Can I ask up until now did you come across something better than these two kawai models, as far as keyboard action , the feeling while playing goes, the touch? If someone is looking for something that really feels like playing a real grand piano are these kawai-s still the best choice?

It's probably pointless to give you an answer 4 years later, but maybe someone else will find it useful.
In terms of action, yes, the VPC1 is closer to the MP11 than the MP7 is. In terms of other functionality, MP11 and MP7 are more similar. Though the MP7 can actually do a lot more than the MP11. All of this is also true for the newer SE models.

@@klkdc In the format of stage pianos, it's still the MP11 and MP11SE. The Nord Grand you're probably talking about uses the Kawai action also used in the MP7 and ES8.

HI Chuck- I very much appreciate all of your reviews and insights...Unfortunately finding one of these to play and check out in a store has a bit challenging. The nearest I have been able to play in a local showroom has been the MP10 and an ES7[which I believe has the same action as the MP7, and it was impressive].Given the weight of the the instruments for portability and all other factors has me leaning towards the MP7, but if you have any other comparison comments between these, I would be grateful to hear them. I really wish I had all 3 in front of me to truly decide. Thanks.
ttp911 The weight of the MP11 is definitely a problem for the performing pianist... the MP7 is a great all-purpose stage piano at a decent price too (I would definitely consider one)! If you want a nice keyboard action AND all-purpose stage piano at a lower weight than the MP11, try out the Yamaha CP4.
That $1000 price difference is a HUGE problem. I don't gig, so I will get the VPC1 and then there are about a million different ways to high really high quality modeled piano sounds. For another $1300 I can get Roland FA-06 and have access to 2000 sounds from the Integra sound module, just for starters.
If you're into piano, try the Dexibell SX7 for an external module. I hated digital piano sounds before I found Dexibell's.
For $1300 and option would be this combo. A used YAMAHA Motif Rack XS (800-900) , and a used Triton Rack (400-500). The XS has great pianos, e.Pianos, acoustic guitars, etc ... and the Triton sounds like your in another galaxy!
Is the VPC-1 really better than the LACHNIT MK22 Imperial 97?
While the MK22 action may be 'professionally regulated' by a master, at the end of the day its still a Fatar action.
VPC-1 uses true wooden keysticks (similar to real acoustic grands)... and for an extra $4k you can get those professionally regulated by a master at Ravenscroft pianos which is fully approved/authorized by Kawai. Fatar produces general purpose actions of varying degrees... Kawai produces professional actions in pianos used in concert halls, acadamies, schools, etc.

The VPC1 is not a sound source, but a MIDI controller. You plug your headphones into the sound source, whether that be a laptop running a VST, an external sound module or whatever.

tbh I'd rather adapt to one specific (sound) characteristic than have unlimited control. The MP11 looks outdated and "freaky" to me. And for the VPC 1 I dislike that is doesn't have a flat surface, and und for some reason unknown there is no VPC 2.
Well what should a VPC2 have then? Some products need no updates if they are finished. Ok maybe revision 3 of the action. But I would rather love to see a mix of both. I am not even sure if the little bit longer keys of MP11 maybe give it even a little bit more realistic grand piano feel, not sure. But a mix of tboth: That would my choice. That the VPC has NO wheel or not just even 3-4 buttons make me nervous because that means I ALWAYS need 2 88 keyboards in the studio.
@@nepomukism A flat surface would be nice. But as I never saw or used any of these products, there's little to say. On the other side, I would clearly dislike a wheel, as I would consider it as a Piano only. So it is a matter of taste, obviously.

I just sold my Yamaha acoustic upright piano because I need to downsize due to an impending move. I am looking for a stage piano with a great action that I can use for practice at home as well as for recording (both classical and pop, since I write my own songs as well). I would also like to use the piano for occasional performances (2-3 a year). I'm considering the following: Roland RD 800, Yamaha CP4, Kawai MP7, Kawai MP11, Casio PX-5S, and now also the VPC 1. What would you recommend out of these and why? I have called many retailers but none of them carry stage pianos. They only carry workstations which I am not interested in. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

If you play mainly classical, buy VPC-1 and a good piano VST (Ravenscroft, CFX, Galaxy Vintage D or Vienna Imperial). If you play primarily rock and metal, get RD-800 or get a used RD-700NX (I think the latter sounds a little better).

I think ideally a serious pianist with an interest in producing fully realized songs needs two keyboards: a VPC 1 and a fully featured midi controller.
Serious pianists have produced fully realized songs with just an acoustic grand piano and their voice. There's also many solo piano songs and albums produced with just an acoustic piano - nothing else.
There is another reason to conceder the MP-11 over the VPC-1.
The fact that the keys are easier to play as you go in the key (like a piano) means you will be more likely to go in and reduce the chance of injury to your wrists. If you don't go in then your wrists are forced to twist more and twisting is a major source of pain and injury for pianists.
