    I have to agree with your observations. B. hamorii is the perfect display species. I own a 10+ year old female and she is a treat to look at and feed. My collection is tiny (4 Ts due to space constraints), but B. hamorii was one I NEEDED to own. You mention Raiders of the Lost Ark (very good scene btw), but to me the movie connection with B. hamorii is Kiss of The Tarantula, a little-known horror gem from 1975. Particularly the Drive-In scene. If you've seen the film, you know exactly what I'm talking about.
    I should have subscribed to your channel long ago, the content is really, really good.

      Hey so what I thought I bought yesterday was a B Smithi, is in fact B. Hamoril? What's the difference? So far only thing I can see is the coloration seems slightly duller compared to Smithi (but tbh it could be getting ready to molt idk yet)?

Though I was never allowed to have anything but fish. I too saw the red knee tarantulas they had when I was young in the round glass goldfish bowls .

      Thank you. B. smithi were a little hard to find for a while but in recent Mexican imports I've seen them pop up more often. This one I got from Fear Not Tarantulas during one of the mystery box events. They had them on their site for a little while as did Micro Wilderness. Just keep an eye out because they get Mexican imports periodically and they'll have them. They weren't as expensive as I thought they would be. I think around $60 for sling.

    My first tarantula I bought was a B. hamorii sling from Jamie's Tarantulas. Love the little (hopefully) girl, loves to burrow, and kicked off my new addiction. Now up to 7 slings in less than 2 months, just waiting for them to grow up lol.

    • @TarantulaHaven

      Yeah sometimes the waiting is difficult. They'll grow before you know it. You'll get used to the routine of feeding them and watching them and with every molt you'll see a little bit more color and a little bit more development. Next thing you know you have some cool looking juveniles and subadults. :)

    LOL LOL LOL I have a B Hamorii and he is a WITCH with a capital B !!! Feed her she attacks her food while kicking hair, change her water dish and she turns around points her butt at me and kicks hairs, walk over to the shelf she is on, to check any one of the other T's I own and she kicks hairs, look in her enclosure through the glass and she kicks hairs. She also is medium quick to throw up threat postures at me to the point that she literally topples over on her back!!!! Yup he is a WITCH with a capital B. Not at all friendly, slow or docile

    Great video. Although I do have a question. I have an adult B Smithi ex anisha. I've had it since March. It's only eaten once since then. The abdomen is half bald and a decent size. But it's abdomen has not darkened. Is this normal before a molt? I noticed you said your hamori does this a couple of months before it's molt or longer. But it's been 6 months. Everything else seems normal. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Ed.

    • @TarantulaHaven
      @TarantulaHaven  3 года назад +1

      Since it is an adult, 6 months without eating is pretty much normal. If they eat the point that they are full, they will begin to fast and refuse food prior to their molt. The fact that her abdomen is bald is also a good indicator. Sometimes they will kick hairs prior to their molt but the abdomen will still be pink until they are within a few weeks of molting. After that you will notice it darken until it goes completely black. By then she should be ready to molt within the next few days. So yeah, this is normal for this species. I have two G. porteri that refused food for over a year before they finally molted and started accepting food again.

    As my first tarantula, the Brachypelma hamorii definitely holds a special place for me. Quite stressful at first due to her coming in pre-molt, so for a new owner it not eating for 2 months took some getting used to, but now she's a proper mean, eating machine, who I am probably guilty of spoiling slightly more than some of my others at time! 😄
