i get an standing ovation for an actor who died or for one coming back to the screen (ie brendan fraser). but this year only proved standing ovations were misused and lost almost all value. also standing ovations should not be longer than a minute, 10 even is INSANE
22 minutes of standing and clapping is absolutely egregious. that’s a full episode of Rick and Morty. An entire full episode. it baffles me, the longest i’d spend clapping would be like 30 secs and even that is pushing it.
dude I keep getting ads with tongue clicking as the instrumental and it irritates my misophonia so much and that’s five seconds before I throw my phone across the room, can’t even imagine 10 minutes
This isn’t just film, every single theatre production I’ve seen in the last 4 years got a standing ovation, lots of them did not really deserve it but I joined in bc it would be weird to be the only one not standing. It feels like a standing ovation no longer means the show was good, but that not giving a standing ovation means it was bad. It’s weird.
I went on a trip to London a few years back and saw about 6 shows on the west end. I think only two got a standing ovation. 1 was because they literally asked us to get up start clapping and filming so it would have been awkward not to. And the other one because it was about 9/11 and I feel like everyone would feel it would be disrespectful to actual history to not stand up and clap at how emotional the musical one. One of my favorite musical ever (Falsetto) that I actually travelled specifically to see and that was my favorite of the trip didn't get one and people (including myself) were just full on sobbing. It really depends on the theater more than anything.
i physically can not comprehend an applause of over three minutes as both an actor AND audience member… unless there’s like, a musical number of some kind. standing ovations have always seemed more like expected social niceties than a meaningful thing to me.
I'm glad Nick didn't have to go to a theater and clap for ten minutes because it would be really awkward for the employees waiting for him to leave so they can clean. And really I'm not sure Nick could've seen them waiting and continued, like he would be physically unable to.
i love this game 😭 next time can u guys can add a small clip of the standing ovation for us to gauge the energy visually? it’d be quite helpful and funny
Another thing you hear about at film festivals is how many people walk out or faint during films, but at film fests people often skip meals/don't sleep enough/have other films they want to get to so people not being able to watch an entire film is inevitable.
Also I feel like it depends on the director and how often they make stuff like Tarantino is only making 10 movies so I’d assume their ovation would be a lil longer
Being a theater nerd and seeing like Broadway shows, standing Os are pretty normal there and you're clapping through everyone's bows and them giving recognition to crew and the orchestra. I've probably done several standing ovations above 5 minutes in my lifetime already!
The longest standing ovation I’ve seen was the 25th anniversary Les mis concert after Alfie Boe doing Bring Him Home and they clapped for so long he had to break character. That was like three minutes??
I want to be a filmmaker, and it would be my dream to have a film I made premiere at a film festival. But if people where clapping for more than a minute, I would get so uncomfortable. At that point it feels sarcastic.
Anytime it’s ever a speaker or anything like that I find it so awkward when there are multiple times that everyone needs to go “Are people standing? A few people? Okay now I need to stand or I’m a dick.”
The ovations all feel like a public show off type thing. Like I feel like older movies would get a shorter one bc as time goes on each movie would be trying to hit higher and higher. And their famous friends applude longer and longer. Was so surprised by pans labyrinth. It blows my whole idea
Yeah I think it was actually really good and the audience just chose to clap for that long but idk. A lot of the others are definitely deliberately dragged out by the films creators.
The only places I've ever given a standing ovation is at a theatre after a play, bc like you're showing appreciation for the cast and crew and they can actually see and hear you directly after the performance, but they last way too long even if it's a couple of minutes, can't imagine doing 12 minutes for a shitty film
wait tell me im not the only one who kept laughing out loud when watching this nick can we get more nonsensical rigged impossible to win games from sid?
If there's somewhere that has this data, I am MORE than happy to make a machine learning model to predict applause given actors, origin, etc etc whatever variables we can get

Pans labyrinth is one of the best movies ever made in my opinion. Traumatizing asf for sure but I completely understand why it would get a 22 min standing ovation.
Honestly the movie was genuinely good. It wasn’t the most amazing movie I’ve ever seen but I feel it was well executed. Standing ovation worthy tho?? Not necessarily
I played in an orchestra and I remember standing there with my violin at the end like, it wasn't that good, can you stop clapping already so I can take this uncomfortable dress off? lol And from the audience's perspective, they don't know when it's polite to stop clapping. And omg, why is it that in Europe, people end up clapping in sync?! It's so creepy to stand on the stage looking at a see of darkness, hearing clapping in unison.
It’s not the applause that’s meaningless, it’s film festivals in total. Pretentious circlejerks of rich old executives with no taste and the people that suck up to them for clout. No wonder an audience at a festival will clap 20 minutes on end for the most boring garbage you’ve ever seen.
I lost faith in all standing ovations when I went to see Twilight Breaking Dawn 2-because my little sister begged me to take her- and all the 12 year olds went CRAZY at the end clapping and cheering!
