Two things improved this amp for me. 1. i replaced the speaker using a Jensen Jet Falcon. Big improvement. 2. Even bigger improvement was replacing the output transformer with a $45 ebay 25 watt multi-tap one. Now i can use extension speakers in parallel. Improved bottom end significantly. Total price was $345. Sold my Blues Jr and kept this.

Thanks for doing this. I've had the SR-15 for about 6 months now. Never before had I considered running it with the gain turned down near zero. What a difference! If you hadn't spent time "looking" for the tone you wanted, I would have accepted that my amp didn't sound right to me. You inspired me to spend an hour this morning really adjusting everything until I satisfied. Thanks for that.

I own this amp. It is a fun rabbit hole. Led me to swap out the V1 tube to get a little more headroom. The stock speaker after break in is actually pretty good as a combo amp.
However, if you can afford a 2x12 cab, the external speaker opens it up. Solves the “I don’t like this amp today” moments and I’m back in the zone. Currently using Greenback or Fender Special Design loaded cabs (old red knob Pro185). If it broke tomorrow id buy another monoprice.

This is basically a Laney Cub 15. When they originally were sold the controls were on top, just like the Laney. Laney told Monoprice to change the amp b/c it was too similar - so Monoprice moved the controls to the front. I think it’s the same control panel, just moved front facing. I had one of the older ones. Whoever is the OEM manufacture for these almost certainly makes the same amps for Thomann and the other sellers. (Probably makes the Laney one as well). The reverb is just OK and there are people who have upgraded it. Or just put a reverb pedal in the effects loop. The speaker, to me, just didn’t sound great. I upgraded that but if you do it, be sure what you buy will fit in the very tight space in the amp. The power cord being connected is an outdated and poor design. This does take pedals well. If you like that Fender Champ, Vox boxy and midrange heavy kind of sound, it’s an OK amp. It needs to be cranked to sound good. I just never jelled with it so I sold it and the guy that bought it (with my upgraded speaker) really liked it.

This has been my go to for gigging small venues for 5 yrs now. I get MAD compliments on my tone from other musicians. This amp will do an amazing job of replicating 70's JMP-JCM tone at a fraction of the ear splitting volume and price, but you have to do a couple of things to get that sound. First, swap out the speaker. The 70/80 is good at low volume but gets flubby and muddy at higher volumes. I replaced mine with a Warehouse Reaper. The difference is night and day. The heavy ceramic magnet really thickens up the tone and adds a lot of punch and clarity. EL84's can get a bit shrill so I replaced all of the tubes with JJ's. This helps to smooth out the highs (I do believe the more recent models actually come with JJ's). Lastly, run a high quality boutique distortion pedal in front of it. This is the key that takes this amp into JMP-JCM territory. I have several dist pedals on my floor board, all of which interact well with this amp. I use a Wampler Pinnacle most of the time but I also use an Octonaut Hyperdrive for metal tones. Also, the effects loop in this amp is absolutely perfect. Run a clean boost in the loop and you'll see what I mean. Not only will it boost up your signal volume to cut through the mix for solos but get this - when you turn off your dist pedal and engage the clean boost you get an incredibly fat cleaner tone. I've heard there's been some reliability issues with this amp but I've never had a problem with mine. When I gig I always have an Egnater Tweaker 15 w a Bogner ported 1x12 cab as a back up. It is amazing how similar that rig sounds to this amp.

I bought this amplifier as HB on a German site. I bought a b-stock. Cheap, sounds good (I'd say more like a Fender than a Vox). It has spring reverb. It sounds good and is quite loud in 15w mode and acceptably silent in 1w mode, it has excellent send and return for pedals. For the price, the only flaw, perhaps, is that it doesn't have the output to play with headphones, but with the right HD and SW equipment, it's just a detail.

This is a nice small tube amp. I have had one for years and it doesn't disappoint. Like any tube amp there are good sounds and there are bad sounds. You need to dial it in and find the sweet tones you are after but they are in there. Great cleans, crunch, and gain tones from this amp. And the speaker is the Seventy 80 Celestion which is what Marshall uses in their new cabinets, so this thing does give some Marshally tones. I wish the cabinet was bigger to give it even more low end punch because it is plenty loud and could be giggable.

  • @roberttower8059
    @roberttower8059 6 месяцев назад +2

These things are great, but they take a bit of work to get them sounding good. Tone controls are very mild, but take the time to find the sweet spot on each one (start at zero and increase until the point you hear the biggest change, it usually pops out at you). On mine (manufactured 06-2020) it's bass at 4, mid at 6, and treble at 8, but it's going to vary from unit to unit. The "tone" knob is actually a presence control. On mine I like it best maxed out. Like the tone controls, it's pretty mild. Same with the spring reverb, very mild which is a good thing for me. If I need more I supplement with a pedal. I do not like the gain sound of this amp, so I set it and forget it at 1 and get my gain from a preamp or an overdrive. With it fully off it sounds lifeless. The master volume is powerful. At 1-2 it stays clean, at 3-4 the sound starts to fill out, at 6-7 it's getting pretty dirty. On my unit, at 8 it starts to give up so I rarely go beyond that. Lastly, the Seventy 80 is just an OK speaker. Not bad but not great either. Eventually I swapped it out for a Jensen C12N and am very pleased. I also make frequent use of the speaker out and run it into either a Celestion Blue or a Greenback. Overall, there isn't much to complain about for the price. But the chrome panel is definitely a design flaw that hopefully they address one day. Since the only things I adjust much are the master volume and reverb it's not much of an issue for me.

great review; i also have one of these amps, and i was not a fan at all when i first got it. where this amp really shines is with a speaker upgrade. i've found the stock speaker is far too bright and thin sounding, so if you go for a darker speaker, it really gets better. agree about the problems with mirrored faceplate and attached cable, certainly not great. another thing that took a while to get used to was how powerful the EQ is. at noon, EQ is doing nothing, but if you go lower or higher, it cuts and boosts respectively. i always find myself cranking the bass for this amp, helps to make it feel bigger than it is. for the price, hard to find much else that is as versatile or sounds as good

This Monoprice Stage Right 15W amp is much better than most might imagine a cheap tube amp to be, or not to be...
The three 12AX7 preamp tubes, then two EL84 power tubes, this is a winning platform that is the same or similar to other big name-brand amp platforms.
((Edit: Corrected my typo brain-fart. This amp didn't include two 6L6 power stage tubes. It has two EL84 power tubes)).
Landon, please let this amp sing & ring-out by playing it inside a small/medium gig-worthy environment... to include a drummer and other instruments. Your example & demo with this amp over your shoulder is a very poor way to examine this amplifier. You really got to get this amp properly situated in order to properly examine the sound and tone it creates. I am very lucky to own this SR15 amp. I bought mine during Nov 2020. Mine came with JJ tubes. I replaced tube-V1 with a JJ 12AT7 for some cleaner headroom, -just before the ramp to sound Gainsville. I can't recommend this amp enuf to anyone and everyone who is Searching/Shopping/Looking for any amp in this price category.
I love your PGHF philosophy. Sub'ed (just now) and thank you for your work and your videos. XOXO.

I have this amp and loved it until it croaked a year later with a $250 repair bill (Power rectifier diodes blew and tech said EL-84s were arcing- which I'm not sure I believe). Even with the repair bill, it's still a good deal and sounds great. Slightly dirty sound, which I like.

I have the same amp and found the mirror plate a pain for all the same reasons you detailed. I also wasn’t wowed by the sound right out of the box. It seemed a bit flat without any real aha this is great factor. I grew to really love and appreciate this amp over time the more I played it. I got more comfortable with the controls and how they react to settings and I think the speaker became more responsive as it broke in. After owning it and playing it for a week or two I’m curious if you might have the same response. As always I enjoyed the video and keep ‘em coming! 😃

I leave my amp on 24/7 and like I said I have only replaced power tube once but do have a new/old stock J&J when it finally does burn out.
The speakers are decent but not sure they are genuine Celestions ( made in china) but I only paid $120 back when I bought the amp. Mine seemsto take pedals pretty good (sonic cake twiggy blues) cheap combo pedal. I would recommend these amps and for the money they won't be beat.

In those vids, the AC15 seems to always be brighter than the Tube15, but they do sound similar. I suspect the difference here is your choice of guitar.
