  • Go behind the scenes of the work that has been carried out at Marble Hill in Twickenham, London. Marble Hill was built by Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk, from 1724 and is a beautiful Palladian mansion set in parkland overlooking the River Thames. The Marble Hill Revived project has seen the house and grounds conserved and re-presented to return the site to Henrietta's original vision. Find out what that work has entailed with this exclusive Member preview and plan your visit today: www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/marble-hill/

As a Central European, I'm frankly astonished to see a house in this style is so old! 1720s would be deep in Baroque/Rococo here in Czechia. :-)

The Baroque was very popular in Britain too in the early 18th century! Blenheim Palace, Castle Howard and Chatsworth all date from that era.

There are some notable buildings in the baroque style in Britain though it was seen as a bit vulgar and never really took hold it was significantly adapted when used especially when it came to church architecture. After Vitruvius Britannicus by Colen Campbell was published in 1715 it pretty much fell out of fashion altogether as everyone started building in the Palladian/ neoclassical style and developing grand landscape gardens.

I've had the pleasure of visiting Marble Hill in 2009...it was gorgeous then, and I can only imagine how beautiful it is now!

What a wonderful property and an amazing story. How gratified Henrietta would be to know how her property is being used now, supporting and encouraging other women who have suffered abuse and handicap. Thank you for the marvelous narration! The care and love you all take to conserve and protect this house is evident. I especially appreciate that it seems women undertook this project - its concept, design and purpose - all for the sake of a woman whose life deserved to be remembered. Brava All!

When I lived in Twickenham, I heard that a few decades back, the demolition of Marble Hill House was proposed by the council. The only reason it was preserved was because of a local campaign.

Does this mean works are finished so I can get into the gardens via the western-most gate on the Richmond Rd again? Happy face if so.

You can go in these buildings now only a small percentage of the population would have been able to travel let alone gain access to the kings mistresses residence.
