The Twin Reverb doesn't have an effects loop. That would be great if it did, because then he could put it after the amp EQ which is how it would work on the actual Mesa
3:34 Oh hey, that's me. Neat lol. I'm actually really surprised how much of a difference that EQ makes. It seems to interact with the amp in a very interesting way where even when the 6600 band is cranked, it doesn't become shrill. It also seems to do something to reenforce the low mids even when 240hz is cut. It's fascinating.

Now you need to chase that 1990 Sunn Beta Lead tone. Thats a very strong Solid State Tone of its own Awesome video my dude
I used this setup with Graphic EQ myself. I was using it to brighten up clean and distortion tone. Without using EQ it sounded like amp was under a blanket. Saw a comment down here, that it´s better to put EQ in effects loop. For me there wasn´t that much noticeable difference between using Graphic EQ in front of amp or in effects loop. I ended up using it in front of an amp, because it´s easier and doesn´t require 2 more cables and does job perfectly. Nice job, this approach got you like 99% exact tone, the rest 1% is the different types of speakers that he used! Looking forward what will you do next.
That's great to know about not noticing much of a difference with the graphic EQ in the effects loop vs front of the amp! I wish I could experiment with that but my Twin doesn't have an effects loop. Thank you for the support and kind words!
@@NirvanaGuitars I got my self a HX Stomp and was very surprised, that the Mesa Boogie 5 Band Graphic EQ is there. It´s unbelievable what 5 band EQ can do to your tone. Good luck!

I can't think of how to describe this new tone other than making a humbucker sound more humbucker with single coil levels of treble 😂 Sounds absolutely wonderful, can't wait to see it in your next videos!
Hey, saw your video, I didn’t see a comment addressing this, but in the Mesa Boogies that have a Graphic EQ section like this Pedal, the Graphic EQ is Post Knob EQ and Distortion, like on the Mark Series, Studio and the Express. Which is partially why they make such a huge tonal difference, If you run this EQ in the Loop of your amp you may get even closer to the sound. Just be sure to turn the output of the pedal down while it’s in your loop while heavy boosting EQ
I actually own a Studio .22+ combo, and I love that amp. It’s literally Kurt’s tone in a box. The clean channel is really nice too, and makes for a perfect pedal platform.
Also great for Metallica. Specially with a TS9 pedal for a boost. After getting a little bored of recreating Kurt's tone I moved on to Metallica and was pleased to discover a lot of their gear is fairly similar.
The difference between studio .22 and studio .22+ is not in the eq, but in the circuit - the plus version has an extra "lead master" volume control - both could have been ordered with or without GEQ at the time. The studio preamp is not a rackmount version of these either, but the circuit topology is kinda similar.
Bravo sir I am a metal head at heart but in high school I was a big grunge fan. Any how I really wasn’t shocked by this video because in my quest to sound like James Hatfield I acquired a mark v and it can do some near spot on nirvana tones with out much effort. Keep up your amazing work and know we are watching and enjoying your work (sometimes jealous)
Love your work man! Extremely enjoyable! I’ve dived into all of this stuff over the years and I believe Kurt first acquired his Mesa on the Spring 1990 tour? I believe he used the Sunn Beta Leads for a stint prior to purchasing the Mesa. Great use of the Mesa Pedal!
By the way, Eric, if you watch jq's video about the Reading 92 tone recreation, Kurt had the EQ turned off on his Mesa Preamp. The EQ is usually turned on, but that show is an exception. Edit: After looking at the close-up image you've shown of the Mesa Preamp, I just noticed Kurt's EQ settings were off at that show as well.
Hey Eric, I’m a big fan of the channel. Not to piss on your parade but are you sure Kurt was using the EQ on Jonathan Ross? I have a mesa boogie studio pre, and I have actually also stopped and paused the video of territorial pissings in the past, to try to see his settings. You can see the EQ is set to ‘Auto’ (3rd switch from the right). That means the EQ kicks in automatically when the lead channel is active. You can just about see Rhythm switch is down (in the picture left most switch on the bottom). These settings are confirmed by the three LEDs Rhythm, Lead and EQ: Rhythm is red (on), the other two are dark (off). Please correct me if I am wrong.
Are you ever going to get a mosrite gospel? Kurt used it for Drain You, Come as you are, Lithium and Verse Chrous Verse, its pretty pricey but your tone recreations would be killer with it!
This pedal really brightens the sansamp distortion which I love, bc I actually don’t like the sansamp distortion but the mesa boogie pedal really makes it shine
I love your videos, man, your tone gets very close to Kurts. Consider get a 4x12 1960 Marshall cab with at least G12T-75s, which he - very probably - used live - although I've seen somewhere somebody, maybe Earnie Bailey, says he liked the 75s, Vintage 30s and Greenbacks. He used 8 4x12 Marshall 1960 cabs on stage, so, very possible he had different speakers - those 3 types - on those cabs.
If anyone is curious i found i can still get pretty close to these tones just trying to match the eq settings on a behringer 7band eq. Really any eq could get you somewhat in the ballpark at least in my experience.
I’d say the only thing that’s really missing in your tone videos is that you’re not able to mic up your cab, there’s a certain low end and sense of space that’s missing but great stuff as always!
Another great video! This EQ makes a real contribution to Kurt’s sound, which is clearly noticeable in the comparison videos. Looking closely at the studio preamp settings during the Jonathan Ross show, you can see that the EQ switch is set to OFF, and the EQ light is off as well. This means Kurt didn’t engage his EQ for this show. Quite surprising…
Agreed. I actually made a similar comment above, before noticing yours here. Unfortunately, right before we get the close up of the amp, kurt can be seen changing some settings. He seems to turn a knob clockwise on the left, and then on the right of the amp. Observing his arms movements, it does not look like he flicks any switches. My guess is he’s turning up volume to get wilder feedback. In summary, we can be quite sure he’s not using the EQ.
@@vo2themax646 I agree. I always thought that the preamp's volume knob turned to maximum was part of his settings. But your hypothesis that he turns the volume all the way up to get more feedback holds water. This means that the preamp volume knob was not turned to maximum when he played. This is another clue to the settings he was using...
Never knew Kurt used Mesa. Had a Caliber 50+ combo. Played my Mustang on that. Those are great amps. I made a top out of it. Lots of fun through the 4X12 Marshall from my mate.
A cheaper alternative might be the Ibanez PTEQ Pentatone 5 band EQ pedal. They distilled the EQ part from the Ibanez Pentatone Preamp pedal, which is inspired by Mesa Boogie apparently. You can set the frequencies for the bands and the settings at noon are close to the Mesa ones, so a bit dialed back it should be quite close.
Because this pedal is super rare, I wanted to point out that the Line 6 Helix and HX Stomp have the Cali Rhythm 1 which is based on the clean channel of the Mark IV. It’s very similar to the Studio preamp and also features the same five band eq!
Did you change the amp settings because you added the pedal, or did you just add the pedal with the same settings, like for example the live at Paramount show? I would love to know because I make nirvana videos and I am considering getting that pedal because I have the same amp as you.
MY FAVORITE RIG... mesa boogie, dual rec..with a marshall 1060 ab cab...with the eq pedal, and a tube screamer...and a ds-1 ..but the ds wasnt used besides 1 time.
the in utero era tone sounds spot on to me, that eq pedal does wonders (also, now that you basically have a studio preamp, should we expect the appearance of a v30 loaded cabinet? i think the speakers in your twin are the only things holding you back from the exact tones)
Idk if you're running it thru your amp's effects loop, or if that tone master model of the fender twin has one but if it does and you haven't tried it, I'd recommend giving it a shot as it will likely give you even more accurate results. Also, I'm unsure how pricey these are on the used market but if anyone can't find one and/or is put off by the price, any graphic EQ (so long as its not _total_ shite with an awful, tone sucking bypass) will get you these kind of results. Especially if it has the same EQ points which by and large, most guitar EQ pedals do. The vast majority of professional session guitarists use EQ pedals in their rigs for tone shaping and most of them say that their EQ pedal is one of, if not _the_ most important pedal on their board. They can make your Gibson or Fender sound like a Gretsch and vice versa. Make your single coils sound like humbuckers and vice versa. They can inject mids into any overly "scooped" distortion, fuzz or overdrive you have or, work to balance and tame the mids in your tube screamer style pedals. Put _before_ an overdrive or boost in your pedal chain they can push the dirt pedal after them into further saturation/distortion and bring out increased harmonics. Or if you have a distortion/overdrive you think is perfect and just need it to get louder for solos without changing the tone, you can put it _after_ that pedal with just the volume boosted on the EQ. They are as good as it gets when used simply as a clean boost pedal and even a low to mid gain overdrive. Particularly when used with humbuckers. When used in an amp's effects loop, you can dramatically change the charachter of your amp in many of the sane ways I described above with changing the tone of guitars. For instance, they can quite effectively make your Fender style amp sound like a Marshall or Vox. You really can't sing their praises enough. The Boss graphic EQ is actually one of the best there is. Just be careful when buying older ones because many of them had a shitty buffered bypass (note; I'm _NOT_ saying all buffered bypass is bad, just the one on many of the older Boss EQ"s) and cheaper components which would result in excess noise when the pedal was "on" and "tone suck"/high end roll off when the pedal is "off." But they can be modded for reasonably cheap by several different companies and solve those problems beautifully. In fact, modded Boss EQ pedals are _the_ choice weapon among pro session guitarists. If you _don't_ have an EQ pedal on uour board, you're probably a _NOOB_ 😜 ... or that Derek Trucks guy.
I know your Teen Spirit cover is already out for 2 years but considering the fact you have this pedal now, there is a pretty well buried guitar track during the chorus of Teen Spirit that has this sort of descending chord structure with a Chorus effect that a LOT of people miss. Probably because Guitar Hero stems are mostly used online which doesn't have that part fully isolated compared to the RB track having it completely isolated.
@NirvanaGuitars found it on reverb I'm happy just looking for what you showed the mesa boogie pedal but keep finding something similar well I'll keep looking my only nirvana person I met twice and was super chatty was dave I also had opertuniyy to see taylor and pat i know taylor foo fighters i mean at one time. the jonathan ross show, at the end of the feedback portion of Territorial, kurt cranks the mesa 5 band eq right side (4 on the right) to be full for crazy feedbacking, before this you could see the eq before he cranks it and its a totally different layout
Oh is that the same thing Butch Vig used to overdub some of the tracks off Nevermind? I know he mentions the mesa boogie when talking about the overdubs to Drain You.
I've seen you use a behringer EQ, I've been thinking about getting one to try to get closer to Kurt's tone, do you think it would work similarly to this or should I try to find one of these?
Hi, Eric, does it actuallu have any differences with usual EQ pedal? Does it have any pre-amp/boost built in it? Or you can try recreate this thing with just an EQ pedal with a level switch?
Hi Eric, I thought that since you had the freqout pedal you could do a cover of Endless Nameless from Live at the Paramount from start to finish, I would like to see how it would turn out.
Great video! Thanks for this trick, the sound is really very accurate! But in Territorial pissings i think the eq is off (as you can see in the footage, selector is on center position)
hey i was wondering if u can tell me the settings u use for the in utero tour on the Behringer EQ700 pedal? i dont know what settings u use or if u even use that pedal for the tone.
is this through an fx loop, or at the end of the chain right before the amp? either way, that's a cool eq pedal. makes the sansamp actually sound pretty good (as opposed to ok, but a bit dull to me)
could you recommend me a way to kurts sound but for around 300$ max? i want to get to kurts tone but unfortunately we are in a situation rn. i love your videos! always sound really similar
Hey man i was wondering if you knew why kurt never used a reverb pedal for come as you are or the bridge in drain you. Or something like that, I find it interesting that hey only used Distortion and Chourus
This makes a huge difference! Love the tone 😊 Also do you know if the wiring is different for the SH1N than the SH1B in the bridge position since I'm planning to make a Vandy Strat.
@NirvanaGuitars Okay thank you Eric 😊 I'm using a Harley Benton ST-20 BK as the base model. Do you know which middle and neck pickups get the closest to Kurts Paramount ones? I saw you've used the Tex Mex and Vintera 60s before and wondered which gets closer.
Hi Eric, I would like to see you try the Danelectro Fab Chorus pedal to see if it could give a sound like the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, I would like your opinion on that pedal, greetings from Peru
I have the Mesa Boogie Pre amp. The graphic EQ doesn't work on the Clean channel and you can see from the pics that he had the clean channel engaged. Not the Lead. Making it the graphic eq setting irrelevant.
How would I go about recreating his tone on something like amplitube I've been wanting to recreate his roseland tone for ages? Using amplitube would probably be the only and most accurate way for me to do so.
I've been telling you this forever dude but you bit my head off! Mesa or Vox tones will get you closer to Kurt than Fender ever can. Glad you're finally coming around. The twin sucks, it's only good for surf rock.
I've always wondered why you haven't tried putting an eq in your effects loop, glad to see more accurate tones in the future

If you _don't_ have an EQ pedal on uour board, you're probably a _NOOB_ 😜 ... or that Derek Trucks guy.
sick i never knew mesa released these
day 3 of asking for rehearsal demo tone!!!!
Nice brutha
I know your Teen Spirit cover is already out for 2 years but considering the fact you have this pedal now, there is a pretty well buried guitar track during the chorus of Teen Spirit that has this sort of descending chord structure with a Chorus effect that a LOT of people miss. Probably because Guitar Hero stems are mostly used online which doesn't have that part fully isolated compared to the RB track having it completely isolated.
So the story of them trying to use the Mesa rig for In Utero... makes sense now.
I was thinking about the equipment thanks for this video you such amazing work and videos
Thank you so much for the kind words!
@NirvanaGuitars i also just picked up a 1981 reticon chip small clone
That's awesome, those are super sought after and rare!
I'm in New york so it happend around when they had in-store appearance at tower records i was last online but dave super freindly
Sounds great! Now I want another pedal 😂
since you noew have the mesa boogie eq AND behringer eq700, can you please compare them?
Did you put the EQ in the effects loop of the Twin? That would be the most accurate way to recreate the M/B Preamp
the jonathan ross show, at the end of the feedback portion of Territorial, kurt cranks the mesa 5 band eq right side (4 on the right) to be full for crazy feedbacking, before this you could see the eq before he cranks it and its a totally different layout
Every time I click, your tone gets even more accurate. do you have it in the loop of the amp or normal ?
Oh is that the same thing Butch Vig used to overdub some of the tracks off Nevermind? I know he mentions the mesa boogie when talking about the overdubs to Drain You.
I've seen you use a behringer EQ, I've been thinking about getting one to try to get closer to Kurt's tone, do you think it would work similarly to this or should I try to find one of these?
Hi, Eric, does it actuallu have any differences with usual EQ pedal? Does it have any pre-amp/boost built in it? Or you can try recreate this thing with just an EQ pedal with a level switch?
Peavey Valveking mk1 combo with this pedal would be perfect !
I think I see some big things planned in the future 😂
Hi Eric, I thought that since you had the freqout pedal you could do a cover of Endless Nameless from Live at the Paramount from start to finish, I would like to see how it would turn out.
Yes!! another video 🎉
🥳 new video every week!
THATS SUPER COOL!
How did you get the pedal?
Reverb
@@NirvanaGuitars thx
Because this is so hard to find do you have any alternative pedal recommendations???
I used a Behringer EQ700 in this pedal and it helped me immensely, that one is a great alternative ruclips.net/video/Lzc4syq1z0Y/видео.html
Great video! Thanks for this trick, the sound is really very accurate! But in Territorial pissings i think the eq is off (as you can see in the footage, selector is on center position)
The MesaBoogie Mark IV on Amplitude also basically is able to capture the tone
hey i was wondering if u can tell me the settings u use for the in utero tour on the Behringer EQ700 pedal?
i dont know what settings u use or if u even use that pedal for the tone.
Now it’s very close to the tone Kurt uses!! :)🦆
is this through an fx loop, or at the end of the chain right before the amp? either way, that's a cool eq pedal. makes the sansamp actually sound pretty good (as opposed to ok, but a bit dull to me)
That’s actually crazy 😭
could you recommend me a way to kurts sound but for around 300$ max? i want to get to kurts tone but unfortunately we are in a situation rn. i love your videos! always sound really similar
Hey man i was wondering if you knew why kurt never used a reverb pedal for come as you are or the bridge in drain you. Or something like that, I find it interesting that hey only used Distortion and Chourus
🎉🎉🎉Congratulations this video and tone is so cool. I really want to have cheaper alternative of this pedal
Thank you! I used a Behringer EQ700 in this pedal and it helped me immensely, that one is a great alternative ruclips.net/video/Lzc4syq1z0Y/видео.html
@@NirvanaGuitarsthanks!!!! I can’t believe that you replied to me so fast😮
This makes a huge difference! Love the tone 😊 Also do you know if the wiring is different for the SH1N than the SH1B in the bridge position since I'm planning to make a Vandy Strat.
Thank you so much! I don't believe there is a difference as far as I know
@NirvanaGuitars Okay thank you Eric 😊 I'm using a Harley Benton ST-20 BK as the base model. Do you know which middle and neck pickups get the closest to Kurts Paramount ones? I saw you've used the Tex Mex and Vintera 60s before and wondered which gets closer.
Hi Eric, I would like to see you try the Danelectro Fab Chorus pedal to see if it could give a sound like the Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, I would like your opinion on that pedal, greetings from Peru
or the mosky blue ocean chorus i think this is better
what microphone are you using to speak into for the whole video?
My best friend girl pls of the last concert of nirvana
besides the Behringer ( i am not a big fan of the plastic housing), would you recommend any other with a metal housing?
I have never tried it, but have read really good things about the Ibanez PTEQ 5 Band EQ pedal
That's awesome literally a month ago, eh behringer is good enough, nah back to the perfectionism, hats off
Is there a somewhat similar pedal that is not as rare, but has a close sound to this one?
what kind of strap do you use on the skystang?
Claps! Claps! Claps! Claps! Claps!
Literalmente, tú ahora suenas idéntico a nirvana!
Thank you!
I have that EXACT shirt and flannel 😭😭
