- The massive tone of a RECTIFIER in a Pedal? Let's compare this pedal to the real thing!
Today Kristian Kohle checks out the TC Electronic DUAL WRECK, a pedal intended to emulate the massive and punishing tone of a Mesa Dual Rectifier.
Let's see if it survives the A/B test with Kristian Kohle's good ol' 2-channel Rectifier REV F.

Close enough for you? Let me know! 😇
My Cube 10GX recto setting is pretty close too..check it out ...😊😊
Unpopular opinion time: I would argue that the Soldano sounds much like a recto (better, imho)... since Mesa was essentially ripping off Mike's design.
Hell yes! When people get all upset about something not being exactly the same as one example or the other, I'm always sitting here thinking about how 150 different components each with a 5 to 20% tolerance in their values really adds up.
Well. They say the Recto‘s preamp is a Soldano rip-off. But because of the power amp design, the Rectifier‘s tone is as far away from a Soldano like the Diezel in this video.
So this is rather a technical argument. Sonically there’s no similarity.
The pedal is so close, and quite impressive. But that low end thump from the power section can't be replicated. I gather the in the room feel of that low end is dramatically different?.
Mate, I just need to say I love how you make these "mouth sounds" to highlight different amp mid voicings.
"Gongongooonk" makes me laugh every time but it's absolutely accurate and I cannot think of a better way to convey the sensation
Haha! Fair enough. I do a lot of those noises when I talk to musicians when we produce records. It really helps to clarify certain things!
I love both Kohle and Euge Valovirta because of their excellent use of onomatopoeia lol
🤘❤️😜
Thank you for making this video! This is awesome!
Can’t wait for the 800 review. It would be cool to put both amps through the same IR. Thanks for the review.
Best demo of the pedal I’ve seen! Pulled the trigger. Checking it out today!
Thank you for posting this great video! Brilliant comparison and the future looks even brighter for bedroom recordists and players 😊
big thanks for the gear setup, really fair comparation
Great straight forward comparison Kristian! This just demonstrates why this is the best high gain amp channel on RUclips again
😇❤️🍻
This is close. A great comparison as always. Thanks Kohle.
Very convincing! Great video, always inspiring.
I was very much interested in getting one of these, this seals the deal!
That is pretty amazing. These pedals are getting insane man. I have that SLO pedal and its been pretty badass for me. I might have to grab one of these also.
I’ve always wanted a rectifier and now this is right in my price range 👍🏻
Sounds like you really… “rectified” your situation. 🤓😂
I just ordered this plus the 800. I’ll check in w ya on Wednesday n let you know if they’re as good as the video
@@user-qg8nu1eb2e yes please 👍🏻
Same. I'd assume 90% of the tone is a good tradeoff for a savings of $1,800
Only rectifier I can afford is holding a candle near my rectum...
Very close! I'd say the amp extends a little further in both the bass and top, but probably not noticeable (or maybe even the parts you'd EQ out) in a real mix. Sounds brilliant. Will probably buy one as a studio tool.
Wow! What a fantastic pedal!
Getting mine in a day or two. Loved this video! Thanks!
Great vid, thanks dude 🤘
Great review. I play noise rock through a silverface twin but just started a side project, and early writing is using a Dual Rec' simulation on my PC. So thinking about going live i dont want to buy the real thing. Considering this pedal to go into my Twin and your comments and explanation about how to use it are super helpful. Thankyou 👍🏼
2:00 "secret" 😂
Makes it look so easy, that just shows how much of a pro this guy is. I like his descriptions and sounds. The “rattle” he’s talking about, I call sizzle. That freaking sick tone is timeless to me. May pick up this pedal and mess around with it on my MB dual caliber DC-5
Thanks man! 🤘❤️
I have the pedal and forgot about adding the 808...now it sounds way more saturated and where I like to be !! Great demo
This is a great sounding pedal! It's on my list now.
Love that guitar,it's like if you wanna have a LP type for studio where your playing sitting down, that's perfect.
yes, recto's power section, along with using rectifier tubes, is what it makes rectos. and it's designed so well that using/trying different power tubes with recto is fun practice, too.
6V6GT gives recto more smooth and nicely saturated sound with hint of vintage vibe, and 6CA7 gives in-your-face yet warm sound.
personally, i use 6550/KT88 for my dual recto from mid 90s, and 6V6GTs for triple recto from early 2000s. 🤟
Thats quite surprising and impressive for the pedal! Would love to compare it against my dual rec!
Pedal has a little less low end oompf power from what i hear but really captures the character like you said.
Awesome if you want mobility and abit tamed version.
So very close! excellent video
Bought the Mimiq pedal too and i'm amazed with the pedal,Kristian!
TC are coming out with some cool shit for sure!
just found my Christmas idea..so cool
Sounds great!
Wow amazing comparison I've been using overloud thu which sounds close. Looks like I could use that in the return of my jcm2000. Great video 😎
That's really incredible. I can't tell much of a difference.
Great Investigation! 👍
Thinking of ordering this. Going to run my TS9->DW->Guptech pdEQ->Duncan Powerstage 170->ENGL 412 or EVH212. Will be interesting to see what happens! Frankly I am very happy with how the Recto models sound on my Axe Fx Ultra, I use a HPF before the Drive on Axe FX and a PEQ after the amp, boosting a bit of 120, bruhhhh so good! McChunk!
"Good job Kristian" möchte man sagen. Großartiges Video, bestens erklärt und demonstriert mal wieder!
Vielen Dank! 🤘
the twinote boogie distortion is a very affordable amazing mesa mark III in a pedal, just check it out! cheers .🎸🎸
It´s Damn close. The Recto sound i love.
Goddamn an actual comparison video where someone shows the whole chain from pup to cab. Easy sub. Hope you try all those pedals, even just seeing the 5150 get close would be crazy. TC would be mad to not send you the whole set.
They nailed it.
That pedal sounds amazing
Very impressive 👍
EXCELLENT...Thanks.
I like blending, a dual recto (my all time fav), a 6505+ and a jcm800 or super lead. You can get some cool tones having each amp do a certain tone aspect.
love their 3 high gain ampworx pedals - Jims800, V550 and the Dual Wreck. great little preamp pedals - I use mine through Blackstar Amped pedal
That sounds like a good combo to me!
@KohleAudioKult the other guitarist in my band uses a real mesa dual rectifier and I use this combo. Keeps up with it nicely, and can get just as loud.
The tight knob is so helpfull
I used to use a 20/20 Mesa power amp, with an eleven rack on the mesa setting. sounded just like the real deal. must have been the poweramp
Thanks for this great video
I wanted to buy this pedal but I was very sceptical about it.
As I've written in the comments of some other video of yours, the rectifier tone comes really from the power amp as you're stating here (no negative feedback on the red channel).
Thanks I'm gonna buy it so I can use it with my solid state power amp
Maybe with some eq I can recreate the curve impedance of a tube power amp and finally leave my real rectifier at home
I hope that’s gonna work!
I kinda missed to play it through my Seymour Duncan class D amp.
Have you tried the mesa throttle box pedal? Just curious. love the channel. Thanks for the content!
Wow that is a great pedal
Grest video man! My Crate V33 tube amp's preamp sound is pretty average and the distortion is worse.. This into the Effects return may be exactly what i need. Question for you though, I have a dual overdrive Caline Andes with a boost, based of a Timmy OD pedal. I was wondering if this could be used in place of the TS? Definitely love that tightened up low end you get from a TS. Anyways thanks so much for the review!
Damn, would love a "Kohle-Modded" Dual Wreck! You should get in touch with them and license your favourite IR to them. I'd buy that in a heartbeat!
Das Teil klingt richtig gut🤘
Würde mal sagen, Weihnachtsgeschenk gefunden😎
Brootal X-Mas wird das! 😇
Hey Kristian, great review, great pedal! But would have been nice to see how close to the Dual Rectifier the D-Moll can get. The D-Moll is pretty versatile, not just mid forward. With channel 3, mid cut enabled with nice intensity, and deep and presence dialed in, the D-Moll steps into Rectifier territory. And the D-Moll does not need a Tubescreamer in front of it to be tight 🙂
Oh no, you don't get it any close to a Recto.
You can get a Herbert really close. Especially with the mid cut engaged.
Using Polytune and ditto for a long time, but this pedal makes me being a big fan of TC Electronic. The price is just right.
Damn close honestly... for someone on a budget wanting that tone, TC nailed it!
Love it.. But that Diezel sounds quite good too. I love my first series Single Recto.. which that pedal reminds me of. Might have to get a pedal.
That Diezel is lovely! It's just far away from a Recto.
I‘ve using an AMT R2 (Mesa Cover) in my live rig, with midi activation to slave it in to the poweramp. Sounds great for what i need. Did you try this?
I still think you should do a Kemper pack. That Rectifier sound is amazing, i want to bring it live
Ahhh the bummer is it doesn't have the presence knob. I like to do the presence all the way up and the treble all the way down on the organge channel in vintage mode with a TS in front and a 10 band in the loop with some fizz rolled off. But, pretty cool!
But it doesn’t emulate the orange channel in vintage mode anyway which is a very different thing altogether.
Wampler did the Triple Wreck first years ago... That was pretty good. But this sounds good too...
Some of my fav axemen use dual rectifiers. John Petrucci, James Hetfield, Al Di Meola, Kim Thayil, some others. Michael Romeo of Symphony X uses the Dual Wrecks on occasion.
Impressive
would love if you showcase the DAE duality , just to see how you would used it
I was thinking different rectifiers sound different and then you said so at the end haha
¿I should put this before my preamp cab pedal or in the effects loop of the preamp?
can't wait for the jcm !
It's already out!
the video ? @@KohleAudioKult
If this pedal
is too much for you, look at the old Ibanez Smash Box. It's REALLY close and i paid 30 buck for mine last year. It is noisier but it's also cheap enough that i don't mind taking out and about.
Impressive indeed, very intelligent comments.
would this work well with a solid state poweramp? perhaps the poweramp section on a laney ironheart foundary loud pedal?
The day has come. Solid state has caught up with tubes.
Okay, so I bought the dual wreck, and the Tubescreamer (TS9). Can you please share exact settings? Like, it seems you're on the clean channel with boost on? What is the status of the "pre/boost" toggle switch at the back?
This pedal sounds a bit like what a Rectifier would sound like if it was made by Peavey/EVH. It's a bit more mid-focused and has less of the top end fizz/rattle and low end rumble. Overall it's pretty cool. I wonder what it soudns like in a mix.
Perfect description!
Close enough for me!
Hi Kris. Is this a sponsored video? Also, AMT make preamp pedals similar to this. I've been using them for years. Great pedals if your playing live using the venue's backline.
Its really close. The pedal has something going on in the gain structure that sounds really... fuzzy. Like Line 6 spider fuzzy. It may be the solid state distortion, or at least that's my guess. Odd order harmonics vs even order. But as far as preamp pedals go, its the best I've heard.
I have the mooer Cali dual running through the return of a DSL100HR and while I don’t know how it compares to the real thing, it sounds and feels killer.
I just ordered this one to put through the return of my TSL100 so this should be interesting.
Your comparison sounds very very close.
Which pedal do you prefer?
@@LTDJesse they’re both nice and while the wreck seems to have a couple more features, I’ll probably go with the Mooer since it’s smaller but gets you to the same place sound wise imo.
I think it’s just a matter of wether or not the individual will get any use or not out of the boost and presence features on the wreck. I use a seperate overdrive as a boost with both pedals as we would with the real thing so the extra features on the wreck don’t mean much to me personally. Both work well though.
@@someonehadtosayit2566 Thanks for the fast response and advice, it helped a lot 🤘
i have to buy this thing
I really Dig that Guitar Kristian... 💯🤘🍻
Me too! 😋
I’ve never ordered a pedal so quickly just from watching a RUclips video. I’ll take a dual wreck tone over a 5150 any day. I’ll run the pedal into the power amp of my Revv Generator.
I wonder how one of these would compare, or even sound layered with, a Joyo Zombie?
Hi, i'm whatching you chanel since 2020 and i noticed, that you use the Ibanez tube screamer differently than almost any person I know... you dial the volume knob to just about? 40-50% of the range. Most of the community always use settings like level at max, drive at 0 and tone somewhere around 12' o clock It would be nice to see a video about different boosts to an amplifier, and different approaches to use some sort of an overdrive pedal to make different distortion characters from the same amp. Greetings from poland !
The pedal with the "tight" knob all the way up sounds like it would be good as a bass distortion
Damn this is what I’ve been looking for! The Mooer 011 Cali isn’t bad but this sounds quite close.
If you know how to use it (explained in the video) it does a great job.
This is pretty wild...how is this only $150? I need one.
Impressive! Would love to hear it into a Power Station.
The Fryette power amp?
Might be a little too dark.
@@KohleAudioKult Actually I mean the amp and attenuator. You can run power amp output into the attenuator for silent recording with real power amp tone/feel. They didn't even realize that when they designed it 🤗
@@KohleAudioKult there is a presence and depth knob on the Powerstation - i`ll give it a try ;-)
Close enough to buy one if i even switch from metal zone for gigs)))
That TC Dual Wreck is VERY close.
I have an ancient Maxon OD-808 overdrive that I bought in Japan back in 1980. Maxon made the inards for the original Tube Screamers back in those days. So I wonder if it would work with one of these Dual Wrecks...?
Sure. The Maxons are great for tightening
This is cool. Given how different the road king is it’s making me wonder how different my single rectifier is 🤔
also given past videos where the tone is definitely change mostly by the speaker and mic position, I wonder how close it was sound if you played it through an IR made from the Duel rec + cab + mic combo you were using here?
Absolutely agree.
It’s a brilliant review/demo but turning off the built in IR then running into an audio interface with a different IR really feels like it’s missing here…. Even if it’s just to show us they haven’t picked a particularly bad IR, it’s just that you need the power amp and even a great IR doesn’t bring the power!
An IR is „just“ a frequency curve. A power amp does a lot more than just changing the frequencies. So a brighter IR would help but would not fully do the trick.
@@KohleAudioKult Yes, as well as resonance. Just not harmonics and/or compression etc. Would have been fun to see how much ‘closer’ it may have been then the stock IR
Regardless though, still a great review/demonstration as always 🤘🤘🤘
@@KohleAudioKult sure, the IR will (by the maths etc) only capture a linear, time independent representation (no compression/distortion/sag) of the underlying system, but I think illustrating this may have been really useful for a lot of people.
Hey Kristian. Do you have any plans on doing a video with your old Engl SAvage amp?
Still planning to compare it to the new, official plugin from Softube. But I need more time 😩
Sounds good. Signal chain of the TC?
It's all explained in the video.
It’s seriously close!!! I think TC is going to sell a Ton of these!! 😮
😮
An accurate poor man's rectifier.. 🤘🤘🤘
I recently sold my Dual Rect cos I wasn't using it (and needed the money) Looking for a good quiet home recording alternative that doesn't break the bank. Very timely video for me, haha
It would have been interesting to hear the pedal with the Rectifier power amp, I think. And then swithing just between the two preamps. The presence in the "red modern" mode of the amp is also working in the preamp. So, it would also be out of the equation an a similar situation for both preamps. The loop of the Rev F is serial. So, it would work.
I did not do that comparison for two reasons:
1.) Nobody with a real Recto would need/use the pedal like this.
2.) Like you mentioned, they have done more than just copying the pre of the Recto. They tried to implement the character of the entire amp. So why play it into another Recto?
@@KohleAudioKult You are absolutely right. Someone with a Recto wouldn't need this pedal. It might only be interesting for my nerdish brain.😅
Btw would you do a Kemper pack for the recto? Since the liquid profiling came out I think the world would profit from a sweat dual rectifier brootal liquid Kemper pack just sayin, also I tend to use a boss SD -1 because some how it gives it a more brootal character
I would suggest you to try AMT R2
gogogoga einmalig :-))) 2:55
Would have been interesting to hear it thru the Dual's power stage
I thought about that.
But who needs that pedal who already owns the real thing? 🤔
@@KohleAudioKult To hear how close they really got to the real thing.
What about loading an IR with the a Rectifier Tube Amplification stage (plus the cab and mics). If I understand well you can load your own IR. Can I?
You can't load your own IR. That's the problem.
I wonder how that Dual Wreck pedal would sound into the effects loop return of a JCM800 (no presence control)...?
Different compared to what I showed for sure
@KohleAudioKult well, how about the power amp in of a Boss Katana Mk2 100 watt head and Katana 212 cabinet?
Edit: I just bought one of these and I gotta say I am impressed. I plugged it into the power amp in on my Katana 100 MkII head and I can get a tone almost exactly like what you have here. Very rectifier like.
